I just want to say that Mod Maxie has come up with a cool avatar. I actually had to think about why he would drop Zeus pics for a swan in flight before I remembered Leda and the Swan, and how it's still Zeus. Great job, man! What next, a bull? An eagle? A golden shower? (heh-heh!)

I'll accept praise for the choice of pic, but true credit for the avatar lies with Dr. Belch and Bourgeois Buffoon, who reminded me of the mythic elements.

I'm also glad you posted a thread on an avatar. Since the closing of TNP we really haven't had a good place to praise each other's avatars. A thread on AniGen called "Ooooh, I like that avatar!" is a good place to keep the mutual backscratching going.

So I'll pass along the favor by praising Frozen's avatars, both the new incarnation and the old one. Freeze is so stylish.

I know the feeling! Some people I've known for a long time, so I recognize their name, but others that I've known for only a short time I sometimes get confused about because they change their avatars. I've had the same avatar since I got here - too lazy to change it!

I assume you mean the Larua Palmer scream one? I still can't find the image of the scream I want to use, but that was was rather cool, but I guess I can see how people would get creeped out by it! I have one I still have in reserve, which I am contemplating using, but it might be too freaky. But it's from the TV show, so how bad could it be? It's of Laura Palmer and she has blood coming from her mouth. Very creepy indeed.

BTW, I'd have to say that the avatars I found most interesting were Bird Boy's 'shredded to bits' avatar, BELCH's Castro smiley, and Singin' Stray Cat's avatar. Sorry if you didn't get on the list, anyone else...:( But there were lots of good ones to choose from.

Yeah, i see the avatar first and then figure out which person it is. And i haven't changed my avatar since the begining, cuz i like it. No other Optimal Optimus has compared to this one. Course, i bet Bird_Boy's cropping and everything had something to do w/ that :D

To sum it up a bit (since I love many) I'll say I've completely LOVED all the BTAS/TNBSA avatars I've seen. Clayface's is one of my favorites, and Mad Hatter's original gave me goosebumps cuz I loved it so much (the close up shot of Hatter from "TRIAL" in BTAS).

I have three Nightwings total, and this one here is my third. I'm gonna clean up the first two (since I have Photoshop now, while I didn't when I made them) and this one is gonna be a regular. I had that saluting dork of a BB GothamPD guy as a temporary one until I got this one finished. I've been doing stuff like that if I need a temporary/short term one to put up before I finish Nightwing ones I'm working on.

And I love DG's current avatar. It's really great, plus if it was like 2 times bigger, it could probably be a painting or something. Very nice.

That actually is a picture of my cat Tuffy (though not the best picture of him), and I think his eyes are glowing from the flash...I never even thought about it!

The Avatars that stand out in my mind right now are SJJ's BOTP piccy, Bird_boy's shredded Robin, Maxie Zeus's blue queen (nice touch, Maxie..!), Ice cold's Wolverine silouhette, Inque's fabulous 'Inque eye' and, my favourite by far, as I'm sure you know, Nightflower's lovely picture - all her own work as well, which makes it even more impressive!

If ya have a pic, you can easily ask people around here to resize it(like Bird Boy...he's the official avatar maker for everyone).

It wouldn't load 'cause it was in jpg format? That's odd 'cause it should. Maybe it wasn't 75 X 75 pixels or under the 10kb limit, that could be part of the problem.

Aw crap....I shoulda said this:

"It wouldn't load because it was NOT in jpg format." The rules say it SHOULD be in jpg format....(smacks head)

I tried a test pic; I copied a pic off a site; put it into Appleworks (I use Macs) and resized it there untill it looked like it was in the right size for an avatar. When I 'uploaded' it from the CPU, my avatar was empty...and after a bit of trouble, abandoned the try. Note, I do not think it was in jpg format anymore when I took it from the CPU...
Also, when I said I didn't know how to resize pics, I meant an apparently succesful way to do it.

....Thanks for the help; I'll tell you guys when I find an interesting pic. I am very, very clueless when it comes to technology....

Don't feel to bad, it took me two weeks just to learn how to get my VCR to record. I'm just as bad with technology as anybody.

As for Cals new avatar, it's kinda starting to freak me out. So many people have good avatars, I have yet to find my perfect avatar.

I have some I like more than others, so I may leave them up longer until I decide to get a new one, but its inevitable that I will wind up changing it. I am trying to go with themes now, obviously. I don't know what theme I will have after I exhaust all my Twin Peaks/David Lynch avatars, but there's so much to choose from there, I doubt I will have to worry about it soon.

Cal, you may never find the perfect Avatar, but I have yet to be dissapointed. I like all of them, especially your current one!
As for me, all my avatars are joker pics(kinda easy to figure out!) Some I definitely like more than others. I think my favorite one was the very first one that I had. It was a Joker pic from Dark Victory #8. I usually change mine every couple of weeks though.

Love it, absolutely love it. :) It reminds me of the old Calvin and Hobbes winter comic strips, the ones where Calvin would do crazy things with snowmen. (Somebody put a really good collection of those on a website, I've got to find it again!)

I'm not sure which website you're referring to, but I found the above at this site (http://www.geocities.com/CollegePark/Dorm/1996/Calvin.html) , which has a fine collection of them.

I read around here somewhere that you made your own avatar, Nightflower. How did you do it? Did you use some kind of program like Adobe Photoshop or somehow scan an image you drew?

I'm not too up to date on paint/art computer programs these days.

Both. I scanned the line art in, and colored it with Adobe Photoshop 6.

Well, ya know, there's no way we can actually enforce this.

The closest we could do, I think, is to put up an Important thread here on AniGen saying we're holding a "retro" week, and that anyone who wants to display their first avatar and be considered for one of these fake prizes should put a note up in that thread--maybe explaining why they chose that avatar way back when. At the end of the week we lock the thread and throw away the key. (No point in keeping it, since the avatars will just change when people change their avatars back.)

I appreciate the honor, but I'm reluctant to be the sole judge. (Ya ain't blaming ME when yer avatar scores low :D .) Let the board posters at large vote on it, and I could just collect and tally the votes.

He's from Peter David's book series, New Frontier. I may use him again in the future, but more than likely it will be a new avatar. I wasn't happy with my first one. The quality of the pic suffered, mainly cuz I was just getting my feet wet with making avatars. Hopefully if I use him again in the future, it will look a lot better.

It was excellent, with interviews from a lot of celebrities like Steven Spielberg, talking about how Looney Tunes have affected them, details on specific cartoons, the great musical interactions with the characters, and a lot more. If it's ever on again, I highly recommend that you watch it!

For a bigger dose of Chuck Jones' work I've found you can get your fix from posters on the other Toonzone boards aside from the WF. That's why I did a double take when I saw Maxie's signature, with what I assumed was another poster's avatar! :) That's one of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons though. Cool choice Max.

Saw it and loved it. My PBS stations aired it, like 3 times in one weekend, and i saw all of them.

Since the demand for retro week isn't fading, I guess we need to set some ground rules. I propose:

An "Important" thread on AniGen board, announcing retro-avatar week. Participation is optional (no, calhoun, you don't have to put the old captain back up ;). To participate, simply change your avatar to the first one you had on this board, and then post to the "Important" thread, describing your avatar and why you chose it when you did.

At the end of the week (we'll set dates later, if this scheme looks like it will work), people (participants and non-participants alike) will email their choice for best avatar to a mod. (I guess I'll go ahead and volunteer.) He will tabulate the results and announce the rankings. That way everyone gets a voice in the decision, and we don't have to worry about choosing judges.

How's that sound?

And just so the AniGen board doesn't get too cluttered there at the top, we'll suspend the movie club, at least for that week. Heck, it may disappear. Even I've been too busy to participate in it, and I was one of the prime movers behind it. Oh well. :rolleyes:

I do think that avatar contests would be a neat idea, but it would probably work better as a weekly or biweekly event, like the Fresh Questions. But DG's Funny Quotes--which he is bringing over here--take precedence on that.

It's not a bad idea to collect ideas for avatar contests. A "Star Wars" avatar contest has been suggested, and now home-made avatars. Keep throwing them in, and one day we'll do something with them.

Actually, it's from an associate of mine in the DIY music world who made it, who records on Haltapes. Fish knows who I'm talkin about!:)

As for what it means, I don't know if it's supposed to mean a whole lot. It's just kinda cool. It actually reminds me of the fighting flowers from Pink Floyd's the Wall movie.
