View Full Version : Loud neighbors suck

For a while, I had neighbors that were LOUD. LOUD MUSIC, LOUD PARITES, LOUD FRIENDS (caps for emphasis on LOUD, I am not shouting!) They got kicked out of my apartment complex for non payment on rent, and I was never happier to be rid of them.
The neighbors I have are usually quiet and respectful of their other neighbors, but lately, I've been getting LOUD neighbors again. And I am pretty quiet, keep to myself kind of guy, but I tell ya, when I am on my computer playing a game or watching a good DVD and suddenly I hear this BOOM BA BOOM THUD BOOM BA BOOM blasting through my walls from their freaking music, it makes me MAD.
Now, I may have a 10 year old stereo, but it still packs a punch turned up only to 3. Especially with the "bass boost" turned on. For example, "Thirteen" by Garbage played on my stereo with the volume turned up to three will literally vibrate my walls, and even knock things off the top of my speakers. So how do I combat my loud, rude neighbors? By showing them what MY stereo is capable of! Hey, if I hear them, they WILL hear me!!http://www.mscl.com/forum/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif Am I a jerk?

I have/had the exact same problem. You could try to out-noise them, but they may not respond or merely be even louder, which just starts a cycle of noise, noise, and more noise. It may work, though, so you can give it a try.
Beyond that, there's filing a complain with the landlord or whomever. Even the police if it becomes that much of an annoyance where it interferes with your daily activities (especially if you lose sleep because of it). Maybe even see if others are suffering the same, you could all file a complaint.

I would go with filing a complaint. Maybe even confronting them about it. If all fails, give im hell. :D Just don't blow the speakers. ;)

At least you have a chance to stop them. The most annoying version of that type of story is passing cars that have the sound turned way up along with the bass, it's just ridiculous. Especially those ones who pay more for their car's stereo system than the car.

Wow, my nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.
Can't even fathom living so close to someone that you could hear their stereo.
my Condolences.

I have a similar situation, but there's not really anything I can do about it. They're building a bank across the street from me. Sometimes I can hear cranes moving and people banging on stuff as early as 6:30 and wind up covering my ears with my pillows. It wouldn't seem as stupid if it wasn't for the fact that they're building this bank almost directly behind another bank. It's actually right next to the parking lot for the first bank's employees.
Sometimes I feel like sabotaging it :p but even if I didn't get in trouble it would just mean they'd be working on it for longer.

I have the same problem. Sadly it's all due to the student housing area I'm in.
We have neighbors who have actually quieted down for the most part, but the first 2 weeks were hell. They blasted THE ALLTIME WORST non-music I've ever heard. It was like some all synthesizer soundtrack to a bad 80's sci-fi movie. And it was always around 2-3am.
I was sorely tempted to blast my own music when I got up in the morning knowing they'd be sleeping then, but I never did. It's gotten quieter so perhaps someone else has complained already.
It's very annoying indeed, but I know it's part of where I live and everyone has a right to blast music once in awhile....I sure do!!
So good luck with whatever you do, though I would try talking to them first to see if they can work out some kind of compromise with music levels first. Maybe they're really cool!

We've called the cops on our neighbors before, and it felt good :D . They were having a party, we knew about it, we weren't invited, so we waited until it was around 1 in the morning and waited for loud noise, and we got quite a lot of it. It was very evil, but it was a lot of fun :p .
Don't worry, no one got in trouble.
Later.

I'd suggest going to the landlord. You could talk to them yourself, but then you could become a marked man and things could get uncomfortable for your living arrangement. Use the landlord as a middle-man - it's his job to be a hard-ass, so all of his tenants should realize that.
About a year ago my neighbours left their dog outside all night every night while they were away - out to dinner, out having a night on the town, and away for a week. That dog cried every ten seconds all night long - sometimes whimpers, sometimes growls, sometimes long howls. In the heat of the summer when I NEED to keep my outside door to keep the house cool, you would not believe how awful that was. After weeks of this annoyance I finally called them myself, told them that their dog was a nuisance (and that it's no problem to leave a well-trained dog INSIDE the house while they're away) and they did as I suggested.
Finally, I was migraine-less. :)

Loud neighbors are easy to deal with, but what about roommates? Can't call the landlord on them!
Loud cars are great tho! I'm so glad the mini-trucker next to me at the 3 minute light has the new Nelly album! I was wondering what kind of musical innovations he would be coming out with next! The new THUM-TA-THUM-THUM-BOOM! song is a great sequel to his previous release, THUM-THUM-BOOM-BOOM.

I used to be a very quiet neighbor until I got my subwoofer. After I got my first noise complaint when I was watching a DVD, I made arrangements to rent a house instead. The house I just moved into is quite a bit older than my apartment, but I'm actually saving money and get to be as loud as I want.

Screw talking to them. The last people on this planet I want to talk to are my neighbors. (yah, I know, I am a friendly, warm, open kind of a guy!) As for "out noising" them, that is actually not my intent. I just hope that when they hear me thru their walls, they realize how easy it is to hear them when they are loud. It usually works, and they usually turn it down once they get the clue. However, they didn't get the clue last night, and kept on playing their music loud for two hours. I expect a level of noise living in an apartment, from loud cars, to kids, to lawn workers outside, to even my neighbors watching TV or listening to music. It's no big deal if it's at a reasonable level, but last night, they were not reasonable. Oh, well. Maybe it was a one time thing. Those neighbors I had before...they were an ongoing nusiance.
On a side note, I had somebody once complain I was too loud (and it was a weekend too, and I worked both jobs all weekend long, so I was at a loss why they thought I was loud when I wasn't even home!) and this is the same lady who turns up her Gospel music to unreasonable levels certain Sunday mornings. I guess if you're "praising the Lord" it's ok to be a loud, annoying neighbor. I just said whatever and went on with my day.

::gag:: When I was in Savannah, there was always the same group of idiots out in the courtyard partying until at least 5 AM. One night, Tamaken and I dragged ourselves to our room after a cram session lasting until two in the morning, go to our respective beds, and flop out. Seconds later, "THOOM-BA-DUMP-THOOM-THOOM.." Tamaken got pissed and flung her plastic katana out the door, and then we hear "POW!!!!" The katana had imbedded itself in a speaker and caused the radio to explode. XD

Filing a complaint seems like the best idea if it disturbs you that much. Doing the same thing back might make them angry, and it is never smart to make a crazy person angry.

I also hate loud neighbors, the ones I used to play in a live band, so they would hold practices that lasted until around 2am or so.
Thanks to lack of jobs, :D , they were kicked out of the house they were renting. Now our neighbors are a nice couple with two children. To this day, have not heard a peep from them.
But your situation does suck, and I don't know if turning up your radio would be the most productive. Afterall, you should think of the others in the building that feel the same way that you do. :)

*WOOOO* That's an Excellent story! :)
My sister had a problem with loud neighbours. She lived in a duplex house, on the main floor, with a couple of teenagers living upstairs (their mother was never around). The kids would bring over their friends and blast music any time they felt like. At the time, my sister was working shift work and she would be asleep during either the morning or afternoon. There was also a problem with them smoking weed out on the porch, which really angered her; she has a daughter who was around seven at the time.
She tried speaking to the mother whenever possible, but it seemed that the lady didn't give a damn about what her kids were doing. I'm not sure if she spoke to the landlord or not - he was a jerk anyway, so I'm not sure it would have made any difference. In any case, she moved out of there a few months after.

So were the people who lived next door to me that were really bad, the ones that got evicted. I used to work with one of the members at the video store, and he gave me two of their CDs.
I do have to say since that one day (when I made my first post) I noticed my neighbors have gotten quieter. I can still hear the hum of the bass on their stereo but not loud, just normal background noise type, and that doesn't really bother me. Heck, the heat goes on and it drowns it out it's so barely noticeable. So maybe they did get the hint when I demonstrated how well the music could be heard through the walls!

I just recently got new neighbors, my old neighbors (who weren't great at all) moved out and let someone related to them move in and all they have been is loud. When they aren't having band pratice they are doing some kind of construction to the house  I think it is very very rude to have band practice for hours and hours really loud. Like the 4th day after they moved in they were practicing till like 11pm of a school night! Not a good first impression and I was mad I need all the sleep I can get and don't like being up past 10:30pm on weekdays.
