Thought some people here might be interested in this:

There is a somewhat interesting article on anime as a whole at
http://www.kampo.co.jp/kyoto-journal/media/animated.html.

Unfortunately the site has been Slashdotted (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/11/10/2223228&mode=thread&tid=168), but thanks to Google's cache (http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:OUwUOc_x8FMC:www.kampo.co.jp/kyoto-journal/media/animated.html) it can still be read.

That was an interesting article, although I doubt anime will cause the downfall of the Japanese. :p

I'm not sure whether this westernization will really lead to a loss of identity. Heck, westerners aren't even all that westernized, if you stop to think about it and the reason is a pretty obvious one. A lot of westerners aren't westerners really, just otherners that like to live here and how much they actually embrace western culture is pretty much a case-by-case basis.

Although it could be argued that as various cultures mingle all will suffer loses of some sort, at the same time, these cultures contribute to one another, replacing what is lost at times. Sometimes negative, sometimes positive (which this ethnic cleansing is no doubt considered), nothing is ever lost, as, if the addition is so unfavorable, it can be recovered over time. Who knows ? A decade from now, the majority of anime characters could actually look Japanese.
