I might be getting an X-box for my birthday. I thought it was really cool, but then I thought, "Are X-boxes still popular?" So should this be something to look forward to?

I wouldn't know, I have a Gamecube. But, I do know that X-Boxes come with a built-in DVD player.

XBOX is popular, but not extremely popular. I have Gamecube, and I recommend that or PS2, but XBOX isn't that bad of a choice. If you're getting it for the DVD player, go with PS2, it has one too. And if you're going for the best games, Gamecube or PS2. But if you want somthing like Halo or Tojam and Earl (great game), go XBOX

by january, I'm thinking xbox will be as popular as the other consoles. finally we will see some good games(I hope) and don't forget, it may be a long time to wait but halo 2 is coming winter 2003. this game will make everyone cry with its brilliance

If I get this job, I'm actually considering getting an X-Box, There are a few games I'd like to get my hands on and i don't want to deal with PS2's slow loading and somrtimes jaggy graphics but then again If I get a PS2 there are a ton of other games I could get my hands on.
So it's a toss up. As long as you already have a GameCube or a PS2, this should be something to look forward to it definetly won't hurt.

Popularity means nothing when it comes to the games. Rayman 2 wasn't very popular, but that rocked..
However, like I said, it's about the games. If there's games on XBOX you must have/really wanna play, then yes, buy it. XBOX has got RARE and SEGA (although I don't know why--Sega's stocks have dropped by 72% due to extremely poor sales), so you know some good games are gonna be popping out.
Then again, Cube has Retro (they're getting ALOT of praise for their work on Metroid Prime), alot of support from Capcom it seems, Silicon Knights..and of course, them in general.
It's all up to the games you wanna play, although Cube's getting more adult..

X-Box doesn't exactly have the best games around but if you want one, I'm not really going to stop you.
But, I do know that X-Boxes come with a built-in DVD player.
That's true but keep in mind you have to pay an additional $30 for the DVD playback kit which consists of nothing more than a remote and an IR sensor for the X-Box.

The Box still comes with not just one game, but with two. What do you mean it still isn't a good deal. What other console is giving you two games WITH the console. I just wish my impatient ass would have waited, the deal started about month after I got my xbox. And about that remote I'd rather use that then having to use my controller with limited reach.

FYI.
The system's gotten a big jump in popularity with the launch of Xbox Live. Tons of people going after MechAssault.
An above-average amount of people buying Metal Gear Solid Substance(which isn't worth the cash, IMO). And people eagerly awaiting Unreal Championship and DOOM III.

CG and PS2 are WAY more popular, but X-Box is still pretty popular.

If you want to be popular then get a PS2. PS2 units are selling way more than the Xbox units.

Since when is 'being popular' an important factor in video game decisions?
Last time I checked, it was the amount of fun you have. Did that change? I wasn't paying attention.

It did when gaming became "cool", thanks to the PS2.

It does when you become a Rabid Gamer Fanboy (read: geek with no life). And the last thing an RGF wants to be caught doing is supporting the PS2. TRUE gamers play Nintendo and don't support companies like Sony and Microsoft who have no business being in the video game industry.

Isn't mechassult the game that costs 200$ because of the the big ***** controler?
I don't know of many teens going out and getting it if that is the game. Heck I'm not a teen anymore and I wouldn't go out and buy a game for that much. It's not like the you can use the controler for other games.
Go with a ps2 or cube.. better games.

Hey ! I kind of take offence to that. Although I bought a Dreamcast, kinda feeling like I was betraying Nintendo and it was one of the best decsions I ever made, so you guys may just be right.

No, Steel Battalion is the $200 game with the ginormous controller, MechAssault is the $50 Mech Warrior-family, Xbox Live-compatible game with simplified controls for an arcade-ish experience.

I wasn't bashing Nintendo-lovers in general if that's what you think. Nintendo's my favorite too. I was just showing my disgust for people who judge consoles rather than judge games. It's the games that matter, not what system it's on. Unfortunately, the majority of low life forms that console-bash happen to be Nintendo fanboys (usually bashing Sony and Micro$oft).

Yeah that's true. But If you ever go to an X-Box board, it's pretty bad. I didn't think you were bashing all NIntendo-lovers, it's just I used to be complete biased fanboy.

True, BUT, the Cube bashing comes from Microsoft itself--Sunny World, always dissing it in their magazine. Nintendo's been smart enough not to retaliate in a way that'd make them look little. I see it this way:
XBOX-Your momma sucks!
Nintendo-*ignores XBOX, continues working*
XBOX-Did you hear me? Your whole FAMILY sucks!
Nintendo-*ignores XBOX, continues working*
If you can't tell, I'm making Microsoft out to be the bully--which they've always been, regardless of XBOX or not. So, whereas Nintendo fanboys bash XBOX for their comments, Nintendo doesn't. I don't know if there's any logic in it other than pure hate and spite for Microsoft for their petty shots..

The relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo reminds me of the SNL parody ad of Mack North and Fred Peete, where Mack kept hounding Fred even after he lost the election.
Microsoft has made some retarded moves in that area, especially with that lame Flash ad I saw a while back.

Well it's true they don't do that on TV, it isn't true from older issues of Nintendo Power. I remember they did some Sega and Sony bashing back then. One issue a fan wrote a letter saying that Sega ripped off Nintendo/Rare's character Dixie Kong of Donkey Kong Country by having Tails fly? Nintendo went along with that idea by saying, "Maybe some Sega spy came into the headquarters and stole a beta-version of Donkey Kong Country 2." Too bad Sonic the Hedgehog 2 came out years before the first Donkey Kong Country!!!!!
Another instance is when Nintendo Power had a what will be hot in 1998 and what won't be section in their December 97 issue. They showed Zelda: Ocarina of Time as being hot, and Final Fantasy 7 was not.
One more time, if you saw the Star Fox 64 promotional video, all it was was a N64 beats PS1 and Saturn video. Two goofy looking people, one wearing a Sony sweatshirt, one wearing a Sega sweatshirt were trying to spy on Nintendo headquarters and the Nintendo guy came out and showed them there soon to be released Starfox game. Surprisingly those Sony and Sega "employees" didn't know that Starfox 64 wouldn't be coming to Saturn or PlayStation. Blah blah, only for N64.
Those are a few examples of Nintendo's bashing other companies in the past. There were some SNES beats Genesis magazine ads, but I won't even bother with that. I don't know if Nintendo Power still does that, but since it's officially made by Nintendo, I wouldn't doubt it.
I love Nintendo, but I'm just showing every company does some bashing.

true,
Every article I see quoting some X-box employee like Ed Fries always has him making some comment about how much superior their product is over others. Too bad they don't have the game library like ps2 or cube.. games that still remain popular months after they've been released.
So how is Steel Batalion selling? I wasn't sure what the title name was, I follow games reviews in egm but since I don't own an x-box I just skim their review section.

Heh, I think I still have that video. It was corniest thing I think I've ever seen. Which was why it was so funny.

Concerning that add for Starfox 64, that doesn't sound like a "bash" to me. Maybe a small joke, but not a bash. They never said anything about the other companie's games, consoles or anything. It was a joke, like the Crash Bandicoot add where he was outside NOA HQ.

Was it just me or was it painfully obvious that sarcasim was used in that Beta response. The statement was so rediculous that rather than tell the writer that the games were years apart, the guy who does the response just made a cynical joke.(READ ANY MAG..most dumb questions get answered this way) It wasn't a bash to sega, it was a bash to who ever wrote that uneducated letter.

Welll most gamers would actually agree with that. Alot of FF fans call that one of the worst FF games to date.

Yeah but you see that Nintendo did sink to the low of calling all owners of thsoe respective systems goofy or idiots. It's still not even as low as the stuff that went down with the old Crash Bandicoot ads. (and those weren't that bad) And other than making fun of two co. "employees", It wasn't really even a direct diss to the systems or companies.
Those are a few examples of Nintendo's bashing other companies in the past. There were some SNES beats Genesis magazine ads, but I won't even bother with that. I don't know if Nintendo Power still does that, but since it's officially made by Nintendo, I wouldn't doubt it.
Now Genesis and SNES I can believe. Those systems were almsot in dead heat. All they had was a few exclusives, the changes in some games( Street fighter II Turbo and SFII Championship addition  ) and the bashing back and fourth. That's when it was fun.

Yeah I do here FF Fans complain about that, but still it was a clear bash by Nintendo there. That's okay Sony or Square (I believe Sony) was responsible by having an FF7 ad saying "this can't be done on a cartridge". I think that's kind of BS because all they would have needed to do was take out the FMVs, and fix some things here and there, and definitely use the biggest N64 cartridge available. It wouldn't be nearly as cool, but it would still be done! Also, I hear more people claim FF8 and FF9 as the worst games. Maybe a few FFX, but that's kind of rare.
I agree with most of your other points though Chris. I do agree it was better that Nintendo did bash the Sega or Sony fans, unlike Microsoft where they just let it all out on Nintendo's fanbase. Sony did that too with Sega fans by telling them "If you buy Saturn, your head is up Uranus." Definitely not nearly as bad as Microsoft, but still. Yet, they're number one in the market to this day.

I doubt XBOX will ever get ahead of Nintendo or Sony. I dunno why, it just seems like XBOX has no place in video games. I find it hard to believe Microsoft is making video game consoles. No offense, XBOX has a few good games, but I dunno. It's hard to explain. Can anyone relate?

I kinda feel that X-Box has taken Sega's place, eventhough XB will probably never go 3rd party like Sega because of Bill Gates behind XB. Nintendo has always been popular and will most likely always be that way. Most gamers had started with Nintendo and sprouted out to Playstation and Sega, and now XB. I have PS2 and GC because they have games I know will be good to play for hours, over and over again. XB is just too new and there are hardly any games that are great as of yet.
You just have to think of these consolers as political parties:
GameCube: Republican
Playstation 2: Democratic
X-Box: Independent (you know, Ross Perot and Bill Gates have a lot of money, and you know.....that's why I put them there :D )
Political Parties are in a unwritten constitution and so are these consolers, they say what they'll give us and bash the others at the same time. Although I don't think PS2 has done much bashing.

Er, no. The majority is actually in love with FF7, with a smaller amount calling it "one of the worst FF games to date." Most of those calling it bad are those who are in love with the older FF games, for example, FF6 and FF4. Even so, though, many FF fans love FF7. Why else would it be getting a sequel, along with FFX?
Another instance is when Nintendo Power had a what will be hot in 1998 and what won't be section in their December 97 issue. They showed Zelda: Ocarina of Time as being hot, and Final Fantasy 7 was not.
So THIS was what started that whole big "Zelda vs. FF" debate when the two games were actually released... I always wondered about that. At any rate, this is an obvious example of Nintendo Power's occasional stupidity. NP can be a decent mag, but they do pull some pretty idiotic statements every now and then. You can't even really compare Zelda and FF properly, since they're completely different genres on completely different systems. Bad move on Nintendo's part.
Well it's true they don't do that on TV, it isn't true from older issues of Nintendo Power. I remember they did some Sega and Sony bashing back then. Another silly statement, though it's not as stupid as the one above.
All in all, EVERY company has done bashing at one time or another. If you really think about it, these big "console company wars" really resemble pre-school yard fights than anything else. All companies chuck mud at each other, hoping to come out on the top. Microsoft ain't the only one, Nintendo's done it too. (Though, they've loosed up about it nowadays, which is interesting. They actually complemented FF9 in a previous issue of their magazine...)

Now that I thought about it some more, it doesn't really matter if a console is popular, just that it has "Blast Processing"!
