I'm not sure if anyone else cares about this news, but I guess I'll post it anyways.

I got the following e-mail from liketelevision.com as a person registered with them through their VIP program

To All Our VIPs and Friends:

On Monday - August 27, 2001 - The LikeTelevision Streaming Video
Library will no longer be offered as a free service to our VIP
Members. Beginning Monday, access to the streams will be open
for paying members only. But do not panic, it is a fantastic deal!

We will be offering a new Premium feature, with video downloads
and access to high resolution images! Keys to a treasure of rich
media. We created this new feature in response to countless
requests for downloads and more resolution. It is very cool!

The video basically says that if you give them $50, you can stream their videos for a year. For $100, you get the yearly membership, and can see higher quality video, which you can download, and images that they have stored in a special area. The good news is, they are claiming that they will start adding more material. They will add new streaming material each week, and will have a different 20 videos in the downloadable section each month.

For $10, you can try the streaming stuff for a month. Info is here

I haven't visited their site much lately since they haven't been updating. But when they did update, I liked the stuff that they added. I don't know if it was good enough for me to pay for, though. I guess I'll keep my eye on it and see what the improvements are.

...but I don't go there often enough to justify a pay-up, and the few times I have been, I could go pour myself a good, stiff drink while it repeatedly re-buffers on my 56K line...:(

Yeah, I never had the patience to use it at home using my modem. It just took too long to work, and when it did, it was often blurry. When I'm in the dorms, though, I get to connect using Ethernet. I discovered the site during the summer and put off using it until school started. When all of that stuff opened up to me, I was in heaven.

In all likelihood, I won't wind up paying either. The prices are too high for me to justify it. Maybe if they add some really neat stuff, I'll consider it, but it's probably cheaper to just buy the stuff on video/DVD. It is all PD stuff, anyways. I'm just kinda sad because it was one of my favorite sites, back when they updated regularly. Their experiment with Gold Pass must've been their first, failed experiment at getting people to pay for their material. Maybe they'll eventually figure out that not many people will pay that much cash and lower the prices. I just hope they manage to stick around unlike other online companies. I really enjoyed their site while it was available.
