I know it was campy and lame and sometimes stupid, but are there any fans of this show out there? I grew up watching reruns of it on the old Family Channel and then when it came on FX after Wonder Woman. I loved it!! Now I like to watch it just for laughs. Also, I think that Julie Newmar and Burgess Meredith were better than Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito as Catwoman and Penguin. What do you guys think?

I can remember watching that show everyday at 6pm (AT) for the whole hour, being glued to the screen! I taped a couple episodes and occasionally watch it. It's actually not a bad show, and had a huge budget for it's time.
I also grew up with it, mostly because of my father, but I enjoyed it. Green Hornet too. Its Batman, its just the way he was in that era as Ive said before. Its also nice to see some classic Dick Grayson Robin adventures, without all those other side kicks and guest stars, just Batman, Robin, and occasicnally Batgirl. Great show.

Great Batmobile. It's the car you see Adam, the chicks love the car!
Shame Caesar couldn't have shaved off his 'tache for the Joker!
Notice in ROTJ how Joker refers to Wayne's location as 'Stately Wayne Manor'!

Hi Joker85!
I'm a huge fan of the 1960s Batman show. I loved the show ever since my grandmother introduced me to it in 1983, when I was 6. Now, I have all but two of the the episodes on tape from when it ran on FX in 1997 (I'm missing the Minstrel two-parter), and I'm retaping the ones that are currently airing on Sci-Fi (the show is cut to make room for more commercials, and the channels cut out different parts). I also have the 1966 movie on tape.
For those who may not be aware, Sci-Fi is having another Bat-marathon tomorrow (Monday, May 14) from 11 am to 4 pm. I'll come back with a list of the episodes to air.
I am also so bad (or to me, good) that I write fanfiction based on the show. So far, I have written three two-parters for a site called the The Batgirl Bat-Trap Homepage (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Labyrinth/8120/), which houses fanfiction that continues the continuity of the 1960s series. Currently, I am working on another two-parter, which will debut in the fall, and I have two more in the works. Also, the current editor of the site, twof, may be stepping down in January 2003, and I may be taking his place. Below are what I have done so far.
Part 1: Gender Bender (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Station/6265/gender.html)
Part 2: With More to Render (http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Station/6265/render.html)
Part 1: Guests From Beyond (http://www.geocities.com/silvercap.geo/guests.html)
Part 2: Breaking the Earthly Bond (http://www.geocities.com/silvercap.geo/breaking.html)
Part 1: Making Headlines (http://www.geocities.com/silvercap.geo/headlines.html)
Part 2: Beating Deadlines (http://www.geocities.com/silvercap.geo/deadlines.html)
Have a great week!

That's great! I love the name of your fanfics. I think you're doing a great job, and I think you're the perfect person for the job if "twof" has to step down! The 1960s show is a good show. The Bat-Shark Repelent remains the most hysterical thing about the show.

To the Batmobile...let's go
Atomic battery is to power
Turbine is up to speed...
Roger, ready to move out!!! :p
Ok, as you can see...I loved that show when I was a little kid. It was funny seing Dick Grayson pop-up with these stupid lines " Holy Guacamole Batman :p ". Grayson did look dorky in that show:D Then again...they all did:rolleyes: Now I am wondering what kept me glued to that show as a kid. Oh well!, it was a good show for that time, it was funny, goofy, and silly. Adam West was great as Batman...I just don't remember who was the actor who played Grayson.
BTW, this is a good topic Joker85!!! :D
PS: Julie Newmar and the rest of the old crew were great:)

I was just a small child when the show first aired in January, 1966(yes, I am old) but I loved it! I pinned a towel around my neck and ran around like Batman and Robin, beginning a lifelong interest in the character. I still love the show today if for nothing else than nostalgic reasons.

Be sure to tell us about that Green Hornet crossover. Man, that'd be cool.
Question: How come Green Hornet always fought when it was Kato (his driver) that could really kick butt?

The Batman TV show was as Pinky and the Brain is; that is to say, it was great for little kids who didn't know any better, and it had double entendres and nostalgia for adults. Building a show for two simultaneous demographics is a great method for getting a successful show.

I consider it now satire. It's just a bright chipper show completely dated and in the 60s style. Alotta flash, little substance.

Thanks for creating this thread! I grew up with this show also and I always enjoyed it. The great mix of villains and traps and cameos and cheesy lines!
Nerdgirl thanks so much for posting that schedule...many of those listed are some of my favs! I'm gonna write this down on my calendar to tape! btw...the Minstrel wasn't that great IMO...but naturally you want to complete your set!:)
My fav episodes were:
#1 Dr Cassandra and Kabala - because they let the 6 Arch-Enemies out of jail briefly! Great episode! (hmm...Come to think of it...who were the 6? Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman (Julie even though Eartha had taken over the role I believe), King Tut and Egghead...is that right?)
#2 Black Widow - Because I love the fact that Tallulah took this part...she was a raging alcoholic and chain smoker and I think this was her last role...she was a great actress...probably the most famous person to appear in the series. (eh...maybe some of the other leading men types who appeared could be argued: Van Johnson, Maurice Evans, oops...cant forget Liberace!! He was pretty famous too!...but the absolute lousiest villain IMO)
#3 Joker's Astrology crimes - I think this was a 3-parter...never forgot that big ugly clam!
Least favs:
#1 Nora Clavicle - B*O*R*I*N*G but appropriate for the times I admit! Loved the way Batman wiggled his ears to get out of her trap though! lol
#2 Chandell - Oh Lord! Need I explain? Reminds me of the Ventriliquist from the cartoons kinda. :)
#3 Lord Phogg and Lady Penelope - I think this was another 3-parter...not too interesting though IMO.
BEST LINE (IMO):
Scene: Batman and Robin are rotating on a giant rotisserie (not sure if rotating actually)...so I think Catwoman (Julie) goes to "baste" them...
Robin says "Holy Oleo*"
to which Catwoman replies "I didn't know you could yodel"
That was so cute...I loved Julie!:)
OK...Enough for now...I just joined this board about an hour ago (I was on the old board but lost track) and I feel like a kid in a candy store!:)
Great thread! I'll be back!:)
*Oleo (for the benefit of you youngsters) is another name for margarine...thus Robin's exclamation upon being basted! I haven't seen it referred to as oleo in ages.

We were talking about the old Batman series at a bbq this weekend and oneof my friends asked this trivia question:
WHO WAS THE ONLY VILLAIN TO DIE ON THE SHOW?
:-)

The Riddlers girl in the pilot, played by Jill St. John. ;)

I'm looking for an actual "guest-starring" villain. That was a nice piece of trivia that I will pass along to my friend though, that will teach him to ask a question with multiple answers! :):)

Well...supposedly it was Marsha Queen of Diamonds played by Carolyn Jones (Morticia). It seems Marsha was after the biggest diamond of them all "The Bat Diamond" and after sneaking into the bat cave she fell into the reactor or something. Anyone else remember this?
I like this thread! :)
I'll shall keep returning! :)
Cheers

05-30-2001, 06:26 PM
Hi Agatha!
I hate to say this, but it wasn't Marsha, the Queen of Diamonds who died in the Batcave. Joker 85 was right that it was actually the Riddler's henchgirl, Molly, who was played by Jill St. John, that died in the Batcave's nuclear-powered energy unit. In the very first episode, "Hi Riddle Diddle", the Riddler and his gang kidnapped Robin (and spiked Batman's orange juice). In part 2, "Smack in the Middle", Molly dresses up as Robin so she could get access to the Batcave and steal the world's largest diamond, which was in the energy unit. The Riddler fakes a car crash, and Batman rescues the wrong Robin. Once they were in the Batcave, she made her way to the generator, and she slipped. She refused Batman's help, and she fell to her death. She was the only casulty on the series.
I hope that helps!
Have a retro day!

This does really ring a bell!!! I could skin my friend alive!! :) So embarrassing!
Anyway...he had the death scene right but the wrong person!
Joker35...great job!! If you had described the death I would have been convinced! This friend of mine was certain it was Marsha...but then again he didnt know of half the villains or cameos I mentioned to him...so WHY did I listen?
Anyway...HI nerdgirl!! I have always liked your posts...I seem to agree with a lot that you have to say (here and elsewhere) and I'm so happy you are around. I really respect you!:)
OK guys...give me one more chance to redeem myself with Batman trivia...I'll think of a couple more (trying to think of one as I type).
OK...here is one...this should be interesting!
Name 2 guest-stars (whether villains or henchmen/women who were either married or "involved" with Billionaires in real life AND name the guest-star who was a very wealthy heir to an American fortune! :)
Cheers!:)

Are any of you looking for another great board to discuss the classic Adam West series? Well, look no farther, folks! The 1966 Batman Message Board (http://members.boardhost.com/dwsutton/) is dedicated to this great series, and the people there are very nice. I've learned a lot of things there, and you can, too! No registration is required, so you can jump right in. I hope to see some of you there sometime!

The 60's Batman Show was so much fun.
POW!
The campness is only because we of the present day view it as such - it adds to the humour and disguises some of the more 'adult' stuff.
BAM!
The music was so cool.
THWACK!
I loved it in Schumachers 'Batman Forever' when they're on Riddlers island: "Holy rusted metal Batman!". Excellent! And then he had to explain it! Carrey's Riddler was just perfect and just as campy and silly (yet sinister) as in this show. Schumacher seemed to be trying to rekindle some of the 60's show in both his films, it didn't really work (he should have done one or the other: serious or silly) but the OTT villains, little references to the show and the old 60's theme in the films music were nice touches.
SLAP!
The Bat-Shark Repellent, the eyebrows drawn onto the mask, the cheesey dialogue, the wobbly sets .... It's wonderful!!
OUCH!
And didn't Burt and Adam have a bit of a 'thing' off set?? BW and DG ... that'd make for an interesting story ... and could explain DG's sudden falling out/departure ...

THE HUNTRESS:
And didn't Burt and Adam have a bit of a 'thing' off set?? BW and DG ... that'd make for an interesting story ... and could explain DG's sudden falling out/departure ...
Actually, Ward hated West because he would fool with anything in a skirt, on- and off-camera...seems the Batman had a weakness for dames. I'm pretty sure West's door didn't swing the other way, even if he wasn't always a perfect Bat-gentleman.
I used to watch the show religiously as a kid and would actually sit and write down the sound effects words that popped up on screen...which I think paved my way for my dream of comic book writing. Even now I find myself mulling over my storyboards, "Now lemme see...does bashing a chair over a guy's head make more of a "vronk" or a "krakkt" sound? And how do I spell a kick in the cojones?"
Carolyn Jones was in Batman? I'll be d***ed. I wonder if anyone ever thought to ask her how she got into her dress in The Addams Family, or walked in it without falling on her face!

God, I LOOOVED that show! I'll still watch them know, but it's more for nostalgia and straight camp. But one thing I've noticed that makes me giggle everytime is whenever Chief O'Hara talks to 'The Boy Wonder' his heavy accent makes him say 'The Bi Wonder'. Just a little ambiguity thrown in, whether they knew it or not!

I used to watch that show after school faithfully (with the Brady Bunch!). They had back to back episodes every day! It's been so long since I've seen the show, tho, I can't remember all the specifics. There is one riddle by the Riddler that I have never forgotten (I don't know why it is some of these things remain locked in our brains). He asked the Batman if you have three (give or take a number) men on a boat, and they all want to smoke but nobody has any way to light their cigarettes, how do they smoke? Throw a cigarette over board and make the boat a cigarette lighter! HA HA!
I will have to be sure to make a double effort to catch the show on Sci Fi coming up. Unfortunately, I often forget about these things!

i always loved that show, actually, i just watched a few episodes today, cause sci-fi had a day of batman. when i was a kid i watched it EVERY day after school, i'd draw all the characters, i loved it. and i never found it corny, back then. Now i definately see it as corny, but in a good way. they are definately very aware of the puns and cheesy humor, and that mentality becomes part of the show's charm. its makes a cheesy joke funny by making it cheesier but in a very clever and well thought out way. ya, i love that show. and the theme song is great, and the opening drawings are cool too.
but the main thing that i think makes it stand out from other live-action superhero shows (like wonder woman, the hulk) is it really creates another world. you really get an over all feeling of gotham city and of the people there and the villians, it creates an over the top world so all the crazy things and cheesy humor makes sense in it, in a really strange way. Like i never really watched the wonder woman show because i always felt (hope i'm not offending the fans of the show) it was like some chick in a weird costume in the middle of a real 70's setting. she always seemed out of place, running down the street. they didnt take the time to develop the atmosphere and world that a character like that would exist in. but they did it in batman and thats why i love the show. it was very fun to watch and extremely artistic. plus i had a HUGE crush on catwoman (the julie newmar one, ofcourse). today i saw the ep where the riddler makes a silent movie and the one w/ the black widow. oh, and as a kid, for some reason, i never liked the way they did the mad hatter, he was too, i dont know. anyone know what i'm talking about? well, i'm done ranting. peace.

I just got information on the Batman marathon that will be on the Sci-Fi Channel on Monday, August 20 from 11 am to 4 pm EDT (again, check your local listings for other time zones). Here are the goodies!
Monday, August 20, 2001
11:00 am--Joker's Flying Saucer
11:30 am--Penguin's Clean Sweep
12:00 pm--Fine Finny Fiends

2:00 pm--The Sandman Cometh
2:30 pm--The Catwoman Goeth
3:00 pm--The Joker Goes to School
