Hello, Bat-fans! It's your old pal, Reliable Source, back once again to answer the question that's been weighing so heavily on everyone's minds. What's the deal with "Unmasked," the final episode of Batman Beyond that has remained unaired for so long? What's it all about, and why haven't we seen it yet? Determined to cut through the mystery, I made some calls to my friends at Warner Brothers, and got them to shed some light on the subject.
"It's a story we've all heard before, I'm afraid," said one WB spokesman, who chooses to remain annonymous. "Much like the fiasco with Return of the Joker, the final episode has been delayed due to an editing situation." Apparently, Warner's execs balked at the content of the episode, in which Terry's identity is revealed by a child who sees him take off his mask.
"Terry gets really cheesed off at the world," explained one of the storyboarders for the episode. "He tells his mom to shove it, beats the snot out of his little brother, and gets it on with Dana and Melaine... at the same time." I was able to view some of the storyboards for said scene, and believe me, it is a doozy. This would be lucky to make it onto HBO, let alone Kids WB.
The episode, which was written by fan favorites Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, is only the latest in a long line of their work which has come under scrutiny for content. "Everyone knows about the ROTJ deal," my source explained. "What most people don't know is that we went though the same thing many times before. It just wasn't as publicly known since it was before wide-spread use of the internet. They cut out the lovemaking scene between Bruce and Andrea in MOTP, and the polar bears chowing down on that stupid eskimo kid in Sub-Zero."
Why would the writers make an episode like this, knowing Warner Brothers was sure to disapprove? "Everyone was getting sick of Batman Beyond. I think they just wanted to give the WB one last headache," my source commented. "And it's working. The hate-mail has been pouring in, slamming us for pulling 'Unmasked' from the line-up."
So there you have it, folks. When the bootlegs for this one begin to circle, remember who clued you in, 'kay? This is Reliable Source signing off, and, as always, more as I hear it.
