Oh! Is that a wooden box?! I'd love to have that with my limited edition! It looks much more cooler than the one we're getting! *grool* (I'm serious!)

The US getting screwed over on a DVD. Somehow I'm not surprised . I'm really starting to get tired of this crap. We always get gipped when it comes to special features (assuming they even put the friggin' movie out on DVD over here, that is) while other countries get these super-duper-fantastical special editions. What really irks me, though, is that most of these movies are made in the USA!!!!! But yet when DVD time comes around the natives get the most mediocre version while everybody else gets the goods. I am so pissed

I am keen towards the Australian version:

Unfortunately, ezydvd.com.au is charging International customers "insurance" on their DVDs now. They will charge you a whopping twenty bucks on top of their price for Spider Man, and I was looking at the upcoming Mr Bean set from them and they will charge 18.00 insurance if I order that as well. :( I guess they don't like International customers. In fact, the first time I ordered from them, they wrote me back asking me if I was sure I wanted PAL DVDs, as if I was some git who didn't know what he was doing.
At any rate, I prefer the international packaging for several things, the Star Trek season sets especially. It's just North America that has the crappy ass cardboard cases on those while everybody else gets the slick plastic snap cases.

Not to thread crap or anything but who cares about the packing of DVDs? As long as its practical(has the title on the spine and can fit on a shelf) is all that matters to me. I mean it is about the movie after all. Plus I have to wonder how many people have DVD players in other parts of the world. Is it still a niche? I'd think once things get mainstreamed they usually become more generic no?

Get a Malata player to avoid the problem.
And if you're asking who cares about the packaging, I suppose you're also neutral on the keep case/snapper debacle?
Personally, I think that if every other country in the world can have better cases, there is no reason the company who produced those cases can't make the same for North American people. Maybe the same number will sell, but you can't tell me you'd rather see a nicer case on your shelf than a not so great case. Sure, you got the same movie, but why do stuidos insist on using inferior packaging for certain releases in America?

Thats probably because DVD is mainstream now. They can afford to cut corners on little things like that because joe-six-pack could care less.

I think the cutting corners thing might be part of it, but not for Joe Six Pack. Joe Six Pack isn't blowing a hundred bucks on Star Trek season sets, for example. My theory is they are cutting costs and passing an inferior product on to Americans because most of them don't educate themselves on alternative releases from around the world and most are oblivious. And what else are they going to buy? It's not like there is a choice out there for them.

They make it so difficult to get multi-region players here(I don't see any readily available at say Best Buy or Walmart). That would be THE reason for people not knowing about other region's packaging.

The reason why the US gets crap is that it's already a sure sell. All of us gullible peons are sure to buy the film--they think we don't need extra incentive...and they're right! Corporate logic--minimize to maximize.
