View Full Version : Actress/singer Aaliyah dead at 22
I just read the New York Times and read that singer/actress Aaliyah died in a horrific plane crash the other day. I didn't really know much about her but I did know she was nominated for an emmy for "Try Again" and that she was set to be star in "The Matrix Reloaded." It's very sad, she was only 22 and he career was just beginning to blossom. R.I.P.

I never heard of her till now....but to die so early in life is a tradegy. I hope she's R.I.P. as well. I also feel for any who died in that plane crash as well...:(

She was the actress in Romeo Must Die, Jet Li's "love interest".

That's terrible. I had heard something about that at work today, but it didn't quite register until i read this thread.

It's really sad, especially since she was so young and had such a promising career ahead of her. She was great in Romeo Must Die, and her music was good, too... Rest in Peace.
I also heard that Hype Williams was on the plane and died too, just a rumor, but that would be bad, too. He's done a ton of music videos for a lot of artists...

That's so sad, to die at such a young age. But I guess sometimes life is like that, does anyone know what happened to the plane to make it crash?

I heard it last night while I was staying up late and had MTV on in the background. Its a real tragedy and shock to see someone just go like that, especially someone who was just becoming really big. She was a great actress and singer.
MTV News reported last night that she had already completed all of her scenes in the Matrix sequels...

it was a fairly small plane and i think they had too much equipment that weighed down the plane so it crashed before it was able to take off the run way.

actually, i think they attribute the crash to engine failure (we see a lot of that happening lately with CESSNA's.)
it's really sad because her career was on the rise, and she was on the brink of superstardom. i liken her life to that of brandon lee, or even his father, bruce.
and just as a side note, this screws of the production of the matrix sequels as well because aaliyah signed on to partake in both the 2nd and 3rd movies.
anyway, RIP aaliyah. you will be missed by many...

This is sad to hear. She was a really talented singer and she was really pretty. If she did finish all her scenes in the Matrix though, she'll become a legend, and her memory will always be kept alive. RIP Aaliyah.

It's a shame to see something like this happen. She was beautiful and had talent. She was much better than all those hyped "young actors/singers" had, and she would've been big. A superstar. Someone I'd be glad to plunk down my $8 to see. While the movie was severly lacking, she was great in ROMEO MUST DIE and I look forward to seeing her final performances in QUEEN OF THE DAMNED and MATRIX 2 & 3 (assuming her scenes actually are completed). She will be missed. A terrible way, and time, to die.

That's not cool. I really makes you think. "Life's a ***** and then you die." It's a common phrase, but it never really hits until something like this happens. And such a beatiful person, too. "Live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse." Unfortunately, she achieved all three, but at least she lived her dream. Well, she died doing what she loved, that's all anyone can hope for. Rest in peace, Aaliyah.

I think Matrix 2 and 3 are done.

I don't mean in any way to take away from the memory of Aaliyah by going somewhat off topic....Both the Matrix 2 & 3 will not be released till 2003 and are not finished, whether the scenes with Aaliyah are finished seems to be up in the air - some say yes and some say no, I'm leaning towards no right now.

To tell you the truth, I don't really care about Aaliyah's death. It's terrible that she died and all but the world doesn't revolve around her. 7 other people were killed in that accident and no one seemed to give a crap about them. They put Aaliyah's name in the foreground and treated the other 7 as a statistic.

I agree with you there. I had no idea how many people were on that plane because the news never mentioned it. Derrick Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs died a couple years back following complications from an accident during one of the worst winter storms of the season in Kansas City, and everybody was like how awful it was, but it infuriated me because there were other people who had died and left families behind. Sorry, but he wasn't wearing his seatbelt and his death wasn't any more tragic than those who lost their loved ones that same day. I know his death was sad and all, but the media just totally over looked everybody else and made it seem like he was the only one who got in an accident that day. The media coverage of disasters like that is so one sided, it almost makes the tragedy harder to bear.

I care that eight people died in the crash. Regardless of the fact she was on it. I feel for their families, and hope them all the best. While I'm at it, I feel for all starving families and all people who have had ****ed up lives. But getting back to the point, I give ALL the familes to the victims best wishes.

Yeah, I bet if Britney Spears died in a plane crash with 143 other people, she would be the only one named. It make's me sick how sometimes the death of celebrities forshadows the death of nomal people. But what can you say, that's the media for you.

Indeed, the media latches onto the big name and passes right over the "other people" just like that. As for not caring about her death, that's kind of cold hearted. Unless it's some serial killer or something you should never "not care" if someone dies...

Yeah, the media does truly suck, that's a given. But I think it's really nice you people are taking time to pay your respects here.
It's not like I knew her, but when I heard she was killed last weekend, I punched a wall. Not only do the powers that be take good people at extremely young ages, but Aaliyah had a wonderfull talent as, what she wishes her legend to be, an entertainer. She's absolutely beautifull with a voice that's even moreso. It's so unfair, when I think about it. They don't just take the young and the good people, they take the real people. She was such a wonderful and nice person, and they just take that away from us.
The two Matrix sequals were reported as finished filming and so was the video she was shooting in the Bahamas. But her label isn't sure of a decision on whether or not to release the video. I'm not sure about the Matrix sequals' status though.
It's so unbelievable that this happened. RIP Aaliyah. You'll be missed.

I don't like how shows like ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT are dragging this through the mud. Did you see the promo for Wednesday? "See Aaliyah swimming in the pool with her friends before she died". How heartless is that? I can't see how they call themselves journalists. I pray to God I don't devolve into trash like that. Aaliyah deserves so much more than this. So much more. As does every single person on the plane. They were people too. They had friends and family just like Aaliyah, yet they remain nameless becuase the media only cares for the recognizable name. Sometimes I just despise the media.

Okay first off, I've read (USA Today) that here scenes were in fact not completed in The Matrix and that she wasn't to begin filming until next fall.
As for all those who complain about passing over the other deaths, I'm sorry but I'd rather hear about Aaliyah than them. Did I know any of them? I knew Aalyiah (Of course not personally). I don't not care that they died, but the only one I was familiar with was Aalyiah. Lets say a distant uncle who you kinda know dies in a car accident, along with 4 other people, even you didn't know him all that well you're still more interested in that uncle than the other drivers.

--the same darn thing when both Mother Teresa and Diana, Princess of Wales, died around the same time. The media gushed and puled for that little British tart and gave barely a mention to a woman who helped thousands of India's indigent. So Di was young and died in a car crash rather than of old age. She was still little more than a hussy and a brat.
Or consider John F. Kenendy Jr.'s plane crash. All I ever heard was an incessant media yammering about the Kennedy curse. For my money the Kennedy curse is little more than too much money and too little morals.

I'll admit this: I said I felt for any other people who died in the crash in my first post.
I was frankly sick of all the Di talk too... it's a pity she died, and I was sorry to hear it, but like BELCH said, it got annoying. And paparazzi is still more rampant than ever.... but at least Di made you think twice on ditching seatbelts.
It's a pity on who gets priority on the media's obituaries....:(

ET is basically just a half hour of hollywood gossip. Imo, they represent a lot of what is wrong w/ society. Let's just let Aaliyah, and all others on the plane rest in peace.

I'd be more inclined to say it's more of stupidity. Getting hammered with jailbait, taking grandma's pills, playing around on skis, flying in bad weather with a bum leg.... It's got nothing to do with morals. The Kennedys are a bunch of dumb ****s
Most reports mention engine failure in Aaliyah's plane crash, but the bit I caught on MTV noted an eyewitness account of an argument with the pilot concerning the weight aboard. Never really listened to her music, but she sure was cute. :(
