In the current issue of Wizard Magazine (October 2001, #121), there is an article spotlighting the top 100 cartoon series ever made. It's showcased by an awesome picture byJack Gray that has Bugs Bunny versus Homer Simpson in a boxing ring (in homage to the classic Superman vs. Muhummad Ali cover) surrounded by a cornacopia of animated superstars from the Warners to Rugrats from Goku to Samurai Jack.
Warner Bros. cartoons ranked very high on this list, but it didn't reach #1, but it was mighty close. I'm presenting the top 10 list in decending order, with WB shows (shows animated by Warner Brothers Animation, not Hanna-Barbera/Cartoon Network Studios)in bold and Toonami shows (past and present) in italics.
20. Spongebob Squarepants
19. Fat Albert
18. Pinky and the Brain
17. South Park
16. The Tick
15. Tom and Jerry
14. The Tex Avery MGM shorts
13. Dexter's Laboratory
12. Ren and Stimpy
11. Space Ghost Coast to Coast
10. The Powerpuff Girls
9. Battle of the Planets
8. Jonny Quest (60s version)
7. G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero
6. Batman Beyond
5. Transformers
4. Superman (40s version)
3. Looney Tunes
2. Batman: The Animated Series (including the KWB episodes)
1. The Simpsons
Other Notable WB Shows:
21. Superman: The Animated Series
23. Animaniacs
44. Freakazoid!
65. Tiny Toon Adventures
74. Zeta Project
77. Histeria!
88. Static Shock
Notable Toonami Shows:
21. Superman: TAS
30. Voltron: Defender of the Universe
31. Star Blazers (it aired on Toonami Reactor online)
33. Robotech
34. Gundam Wing
50. Dragon Ball Z
51. Thundercats
80. Beast Wars (one-week airing on Toonami in '98)
89. Sailor Moon
I'm not surprised with what they left in which range in everything from Dexter's Lab to Rugrats to Darkwing Duck to Spawn to Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors to Invader ZIM. It's what they left that ticks me off. No ReBoot . . . no Cowboy Bebop . . . no Trigun . . . no Courage. But I digress.
