View Full Version : Colouring style: OLD or NEW?

This was spawned by a discussion in the ARTIST COLLABORATION thread. When you colour your drawings, do you go about it the old fashioned way with pencil crayons, felts, inks, paints, etc, or do you use a computer and a photoshop-esque program instead? Just curious.

I'm old school, myself. Pencil crayons, baby!

I'm both. I draw and ink with pecils and black ink, but I add color with computer. My hand coloring skills are not what you would call, what is that word? Oh yeah, GOOD . :p

I myself use a little of both. Coloring with other means first, then airspraying it with photoshop. Makes the image clearer. :)

I keep meaning to go back to paints for a drawing, and when I have time I might, however, I find both the effect and the learning curve of computer colouring both stimulating and rewarding!

Wow, good question, but you should put a "both" too. I got a little addictive with all the magic of photoshop... but I´m trying to go back to the good old pencils and inks. ;)

OK, under Flavia's advice, I've added a "both" option to this poll. Enjoy! :)

LOL. And I've only just voted (I forgot when I originally posted) so I'm the first to use that option..! I thought it wasn't there before....!

I'm a pencil and inks man myself. I only use the computer when when I draw backgrounds and even then its really rare. I'd say its because I enjoy coloring and the only drawing program I have is Microsoft paint and colouring on that takes ages. And I usually mess up on it. I also use paint to upload the pic to T'internet and use the rubber thing to rub out spaces where I started drawing something but didn't in the end. (I did this with X-men, Beast was supposed to be crouching next to Wolverine but I didn't have the space.)

I'm a litttle of both, because in some cases computers make the world of difference. But in the end, I don't anything can compare to the old style.

It will be interesting to see if once the hubbub over computers dies, whether it will ever be considered as a worthy medium. Let's face it, the main attraction for computers is the speed and simplicity of the medium. It's fast and friendly source for publishers. But can it compare to the beauty of hand? I used to hate most airbrushed work and that is what it essentially looks like...!

I do mine the old way, because I am not good w/computers, but doing it the old fashion way, the colors still come out funky looking. I'm not very good at coloring either way :(.

When it comes to color, I'm always going for photoshop (although I should try other methods more). When it comes to Ink......well it's flavor of the week. Sometimes I'll hand draw the 'ink' onto the picture with my tablet, others I'll ink the picture with a pen, scan it in, clean any smudges and them proceed to color.

Woo. I say both. When you think about the principles are the same really..only digital is more forgiving. It also depends on what you're doing as end product really. It's a matter of picking the right 'tool' for the job.
For comics I brush ink traditionally, for anything I want to make superhumanly clean and resizable I'd use illustrator, for digital color I generally use Photoshop and Painter.
Tradtionally I love watercolors and colored pencils as a combo. Bottom line tho.. I think it takes balls to do trad since there NO undo button.
On the other hand.. I do use the computer to composite master drawings and figure out values before I put em to the illustration board so there's one less thing to mess up.. LOL!
