...this is the series God would watch.
It's becoming a weekly thing for me, it seems...go out and buy a new anime with my hard earned money. But I've finally hit the jackpot in the otaku's wet dream. And it's called "Now and Then, Here and There."
The series starts off with a act-before-thinking kid named Shu. After a hard day, this optimistic kid goes up a factory smoke stack(his place where he always goes to cool off), and meets a girl across the way. He tries his best to open up a dialog, but it gets interupted when dimensional hole opens, and he gets sucked into a war for water. A war which, can be stopped with the help of the girl Shu just met. From here our young hero goes through torture, psycho kings, various beatings, and a whole lot of falling and slamming into things.
The comedy is just right. The action is superb. The pace of the series is absolutely perfect. And the story is fantastic. The whole 'kid gets sucked in another dimension, and into the middle of some war-driven japan' story isn't exactly original. But this series handles it with style. The mecha is there, but it's not over-stressed. The action is flawless and simply great to watch, but it's not an action series. The background design is just right with the character designs. And don't get me started on the music.
Simply put, I haven't been this impressed/thrilled about a series since I watched the first volume of Cowboy Bebop. It's rare when I watch the first episode and just know "I can't miss an episode."
Now, if you've read any other reviews for this series, they all seem to end with a "This is an obscure series, and probably isn't for everyone. But it certainly is fantastic." Well..I'm here to say they're wrong. It's not really obscure. And if you like a well-paced series with a few wacky moments, and just as much serious action....well...this series is animation. It's a series for animation lovers. If you've ever watched cartoons...if you like anime...this series has "it"...and not many series have "it." There are a lot of shows that seem like they were meant to be a live-action series. But this show.....it's just right. That's all. It's animation at it's finest, with the finest of japanese anime-writing behind it.
5 stars all the way. If you've been thinking about picking this one up...I'm here to push you on your way...you wont regret it.
;)
