View Full Version : fan stereotypes that you hate...

Admit it: we like animation. But to some people tend to stereotype us because of it. Which animation fan stereotypes do you really hate?

My picks:

"Animation is kid's stuff. Grow up." Ah yes. A classic. American standards see animation as kids stuff no matter how mature it can be. We can only pray for the day where animation can be seen as a medium rather than cheap children entertainment. Take a good look at Cowboy Bebop, Akira, Grave of the Fireflies, Spawn, and even South Park and tell me that's for kids.

"People who like cartoons are geeks. They have no social lives." Completely untrue. Everyone has seen this stereotype before. Fat, unshaven, dirty, in his underwear, and cringes when seeing sunlight. That plus a room chock full of nostalgic junk. We fans are like any other people. We just have a love for animation the same as someone else may have a love for sports. Completely normal.

"Anime fans like anime porn. They just do." The stereotype that really sends me over the roof. People who don't know what anime is see someone who's really into it and immediately assume that they are hentai fanatics. Hey, you don't have to like hentai to be a fan.

All of the above, although those stereotypes are lessening. Ah, the wonders of an open mind.

>.<;;

I hate, hate, hate that! And the worse thing is, I'm too embarrassed to tell people my favorite shows because I'm afraid they'll think that very thing! :o I finally did tell someone the other day I like Cartoon Network, and that I'm a cartoon "freak". Yes, I said I was a freak. ...Good for me! Geeks unite!

South Park is a good example, though. I always try to tell people that not all animation is for kids, and try to use anime as an example, but they still don't believe me because they've never heard of those shows! Next time, South Park will be my missile (even though I'm not a fan). :D Mwaha...haha...ha...

Ah, what do I know, I'm not an animation fan.

...I'll show myself out.

I've tired that, but it'll backfire on you. Big time. "South Park" is still too controversial and offensive to some to be taken seriously by a person putting up this sort of arguement. "The Simpsons" is a better example, because although kids watch it, it's made for adults.

The Simpsons, South Park, the Family Guy, Futurama, the Flintstones back in the day, Spawn: the Animated Series, Waking Life, Pink Floyd's "The Wall," and that's in America ALONE, to say nothing of Japan.

The list of adult-oriented (I was going to say "mature," but then I remembered that I put the Family Guy in the list, heh heh) animation goes on and on, and yet people still refuse to see the truth.

My favorite was when a friend of mine told his sister about Dragonball Z, her reaction was, "Dragonballz? What? Is this some kind of porno?" Which is forgiveable if you know nothing about the series besides the name, I suppose. (-:

Actually, the thing that I use to convert more and more of my friends to the wonders of animation is the Cowboy Bebop episode Mushroom Samba. I don't care who you are, that episode is FUNNY. I've never met a single person who didn't laugh their ass off at it. And once I've shown them that, then naturally they want to see other episodes, and soon enough they're hooked. Then it's time to show them a few choice selections from certain other series....

Mwa ha ha... join us or die, humans!

I've watched all kinds of cartoons when I was a kid, even the adult ones like "Beavis and Butthead" and "The Simpsons" and I agree: When will American entertainment see animation as art for everyone and not as kiddy fare?

Same here. I have a life outside of watching and analyzing cartoons, like school, friends, chores.

As I've said before, that's just like saying "Everything on PBS is gay!"
That statement is, of course, false. It is true that, at least until recently, to see anything on TV that represented gays in a positive light you had to look to PBS. Still, that constitutes only a minute fraction of all the programs that PBS airs. The same can be said for anime and porn.

"If you like animation, you must be an unshaven, pimply, overweight trekkie." Excuse me, but I happen to be a girl who can fit into a size four! Take THAT! I take showers, I use soap. I may not wear makeup, but so what? Besides, I don't even watch Star Trek, or Star Wars.

"All animation is for kids." I've been watching cartoons ever since I got up at 6 am on Saturday mornings. And I still am. Perhaps these people with such states of mind should check out a few anime series.

"All anime is porn, or Pokemon." I actually heard from my sister's boyfriend's own mouth that it's all Pokemon. This REALLY irks me, as this certainly isn't true.

"All anime fans are geeks". Considering my body is in near perfect shape, and there is nary a piece of anime stuff in my room, this isn't true.

"All animation is for kids." You obviously don't see that many flicks, do you?

Don't even remind me of a lot of the stuff I have heard in my time. For starters, I am a trim male who does get haircuts and socializes with other people. (not too successfully, but I try. Besides, what many people consider "socialization" in college involves standing around and drinking, and I consider that boring, not to mention I keep sober) What drives me nuts is when someone tries to put animation in catagories and say it is a certain way. When I first got into Sailor Moon back in high school, I had many people tease me because they considered it a "girl's show". Then there was the trouble of me being one of the first people in my school to watch DBZ back when it was in syndication and controlled by Saban.
(note, the next part is a tad explicit, so please view with discretion)
Then there was this one kid who teased me for watching "Balls of a Dragon" and once pretended he was carrying two giant "balls" around the library as I was trying to look up some anime info online.

Sure I got the old "cartoons is for kids" line as well, but considering quite a few watched The Simpsons (or other stuff), I was never really pegged with it back then. (of course, this was when I watched that, before the Simpsons became crap)

I don't like it either because all animation is equal (just like all men are created equal).

Another take on this which I've heard from a few Otaku's is "other then anime, all cartoons are made just for kids".

I usually hear is "all anime is porn".

Example. I bring in some manga called Miaco 2010(kinda like Tenchi but with Androids) to school to read. I'm in science class and my teacher who likes cartoons picks one up. This is what he says. "OMG you can't bring in hardcore porn into school!" It had one naked women in it. And its not like she was having sex or something(they were playing strip Mah Jongg. But thats beside the point). People have shunned anime because of all the hentai on the internet.

That's the point all the people want to see is that hentai trash and they never want to see anime for what it really is another form of art. So the aaseme that all anime is pron from all that trash that's on the internet instead of looking into it futher and finding that anime is more than a bunca sex freaks getting it on all the time. I also hate when an anime fan says anime is the best animation out there. Trust I've been an anime fan for a while and I've seen some pretty bad animes.

Saying that all anime is porn because hentai is porn is like saying all live action movies are porn because of Debbie Does Dallas.

NUDITY DOES NOT EQUAL PORN!

This isn't directly related to fan stereotypes, but it's one stereotype that pissed me off to no end. The human body is a beautiful thing, and yet, because we live in a nation that was founded by Puritans and other religious fanatics, we have this deadly fear of showing it in public.

Michaelangelo's David is naked, and it's great art! The Venus de Milo! I could go on and on!

There's nothing wrong with nudity!

Okay, end rant.
