I'm posting this for a reason. I'll tell you later.

I'd have to give Betty Boop and Casper a tie for second best. They were both respectively big hits in their days, and are equally much more popular in the world today.

Popeye. He was incredibly popular, and he stayed around for a very long time. Too bad the quality wasn't there in the later years.

I had to go with my girl on this one...
BETTY BOOP, and since she was Mickey Mouse's main rival in the early Thirtie's, until Popeye took over that roll in 1936 when Popeye became the number one cartoon character knocking off Mickey out of the top spot.

Could Jon, Brian, Matthew, or Jack edit this poll
- so Bimbo (my favorite Fleischer cartoon star) could be in it
and remove my vote for Popeye?

I would have to go with Popeye. He was and still is popular today. In fact, in a town I've been to, there is (or was) a pub named after him with his image on the sign.

--between Popeye and Betty. The two appeared together in one short, and it's notable because young Miss Boop is both tan and topless. Growwwwwwwwwwrrrll.... :p

I think Popeye is the most famous.

Betty Boop was VERY big in the 30's but once Popeye came he took over.

I also think Casper is quite well known,BUT those new Casper cartoons are awful!!!!!!

Bimbo added, one Popeye vote removed.

And can you add one vote for Bimbo?
Because I'm not able to.

I voted for Popeye, he's still instantly recognizeable today.

And I added a vote to Bimbo for Pietro because Brian doesn't have a yellow smilie computer in his posts anymore.

I too vote for Popeye. He is still very well recognized today. Betty Boop is also very close, since she appears on dozens of merchandise. Since this subject was brought up, does anyone else think that "Itchy and Scratchy" (off The Simpsons) were inspired by Herman and Katnip, rather than Tom & Jerry? When it came to violence, H&K gave T&J a run for their money....:p

I agree. I always thought that too.

They still show that cartoon on CN. The only thing covering her top half is a skinny necklace of flowers.

Same as in "Betty Boop's Bamboo Isle", eh?
