View Full Version : Five favorite full length Animated films?
Ok, I looked back 30 days and haven't seen this topic. If it has been on, sorry to step on someone's toes.. But what are your 5 favorite full length animated films, and why (if you have the time to give to it) We can get some good exchange of ideas here. Mine are:
1. Snow White (without it, there never may have been any more. Disney bet everything he owned on it, it was called "Disney's Folley) before release. It is the classic that allowed this type of toon to live.
2. Fantasia...Wonderful music, incredible animation,
3, Iron Giant. Wonderful story, and ending that defies convention, yet such a soft feel and very well done. Fun, with something to say.
4. Beauty and the Beast... Good Story, the character, the Beast, grows and evolves into a better individual, very rare in animation. KInd of sappy but for some reason I loved it. Walked out feeling good.
5. Who killed Roger Rabbit. Amazing combination of live action and toons, may never be surpassed.
6. Land Before Time...Just loved the story and the music. (yes, I know I listed 6, had to) Thanks to any that reply, oldtoonguy

Let's see...I have a few favorites that I'm sure of, but I'm not sure if I can think of my top five favorites...I'll try! :)
1. The Lion King- I really love this movie...I'm not exactly sure why. Probably because the main characters are cats! :D This story is a really great one, especially Simba dealing with the loss of his father.
2. Beauty and the Beast- I love the story, the animation is gorgeous, and the music is beautiful.
3 & 4. Toy Story 1 & 2-I wasn't sure if computer animated movies counted, but I'm listing these anyway. When I was little, I always used to pretend my toys were alive, so I really liked the story in both movies. The characters are classically funny, and the bright animation is great eye candy and makes some of the environments look almost real.
5...I can't think of a single movie to list as my fifth favorite, because I feel like I could put several movies here. Many Disney movies like The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Fox and the Hound, Aladdin, Tarzan, Pocahontas, 101 Dalmations have been my favorites at one point or another. Other movies like Little Nemo, The Land Before Time, and The Prince of Egypt also deserve a spot here. I'm probably still forgetting a bounch. Sorry I couldn't narrow it down more! :D Animated movies have often been my favorites (my favorite movie changes about every couple months) so its hard to pick just five!
I'm interested to see what movies some other people like!

Toy Story 2-way better than the first
Shrek- best CGI flick yet
Heavy Metal- Loved it for the innovation and for the varying styles of animation and for the overall quality of the story and the work put into it.
Iron Giant- Best ever
Grave of the Fireflies- Perfect example of what animation can be other than kiddie fare. I wish more people who don't normally watch animation would give this one a chance.

Batman Mask of The Phantasm is my favorite animated movie of all time. Although I guess it's not really full length huh? 77 minutes. Take it as you will. Anyway, no matter the length that movie won't budge from it's spot. Non-animation fans would surely think of it as "acting like a REAL movie" because it told a story and showed REAL characters in just a completely incredible way.
So how about we just go 2-5 and pretend I don't have a 1?
2. Aladdin: Really funny characters, cool story, and Aladdin is my favorite Disney character in the world. It's one of few animated movies where I don't mind the little talking sidekick-like animals.
3. The Iron Giant There's nothing I can say to describe the brilliance of this movie. So that's that.
4. StreetFighter II The Animated Movie: Enormous fan (aka obsessor) of the Marvel vs. Capcom line of arcades, so this movie is a treat, with awesome story and characters on top of that.
5. Superman: The Last Son of Krypton. I believe this one is only ten-11 (I think 11) minutes longer than it's Batman brother up top, so let's just close this post by saying I'm a moron who can't follow directions. :o
Sorry. But I do love movies like The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but they don't excite and move me as much as these have.

Toy Story 2, Shrek, Mask of the Phantasm, The Little Mermaid, and Mulan. My last choice makes no sense, I know it's not a good movie, but what can I say? I'm partial to Chinese heroines. And I know there is a difference between what I like and what's good ^_^

In no particular order. . .
Dumbo- More of a sentimental favorite than anything, but I still think it's one of the best things Disney ever did. It's sweet and unassuming and I'm getting mushy so I'd better stop. . .
Beauty and the Beast- Nothing felt extraneous or overdone, and there's a real sense of timelessness to it, unlike some of the more recent films. You felt somebody really spent time on all these characters without bothering about marketability or focus group appeal. Easily my favorite Disney movie.
Porco Rosso- I like a lot of Miyazaki's films, but this one most of all. I appreciated that it didn't feel a need to explain itself. You got a pig flying a fighter plane and chasing air pirates and nobody asks why. Also, the animation here was just phenomenal.
The Last Unicorn- Okay, they never should have let Mia Farrow sing, but otherwise I love this film to peices. The story, the style, the DIALOGUE. Very dark and very somber just like the book.
The Iron Giant- Very cool. I think if Spielberg had made an animated film back around his E.T. and Goonies days, it might've turned out something like this. Special mention to Dean the hepcat, who has the best lines in the movie.
And. . .movies I know are good but are just too weird/sad/creepy/bizarre for repeated viewing include: Grave of the Fireflies, Perfect Blue, Yellow Submarine, The Thief and the Cobbler, and Akira.

Nonsense! Mulan was a really nice movie. :) Yeah they threw in that talking funny sidekick gimmick we all dread, but I really really liked the movie overall. And I loved Donnie Osmand's song. That was a great scene too.
Although I too understand the clear difference between what I like and what's good, so I can relate, lemme tell ya. :)

Y'know, Nightflower, if only more poeple could make that distinction, the world would be a better place...
OK, here are my fab five faves in no real order:
At number 5: Akira - this film introduced me to the wonderful world of Japanimation - and it blew me away...
At four: The Dark Crystal - does this count? Surely this is classed as an animated film, right? Anyway, the design work in this film is pure class, from the Skeksis to the Gelflings - a seminal film in my childhood years.
At three: Antz - a great, entertaining family film with a fantastic voice cast.
At two: Iron Giant - so good to see this on so many lists here. Faultless. And, yes, I still cry when the Iron Giant dies...
And at number one: Toy Story 2 - even better than the first, with a great plot, funny set pieces, stunning animation... and Buzz Lightyear!
Thanks for listening, and, like Nightflower says, just 'cos I like, don't mean I'm right...

No order whatsoever...
Iron Giant
Princess Mononoke
Yellow Submarine
Cinderella (I haven't seen this one in years)
Mask of the Phantasm (though I have some small problems with it)
Aladdin was kind of close, but I haven't seen that one in a while either and don't know how I'd like it today.

Being a hardcore Batman Animated fan, I am completely flabbergasted. How could anyone have problems with Batman MOTP?? It's my favorite of all time. :D

Just in case you guys are wondering..I didn't list any batman movies, cuz they are in a league of their own (a higher league than the top five I listed.. ;) ). So, that's why I didn't list em'....hehe.
and if Anime counts, I also like Princess Mononoke..

you put some great movies in there, and the fact that the Thief and the Cobbler is among a great list of movies, I have to ask, what is that about? I've heard of it, but know nothing about it. Enlighten me, please.
And...I've watched several of these more than once...guess I am weird!

I have Last Unicorn on VHS...a great film. Animated by a number of people who would later move on to become Studio Ghibli, makers of great animated films like Grave of the Fireflies, Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service...
I don't think it's on DVD yet. They should release it on DVD...
My top 5? Hmmm...
1. Kiki's Delivery Service--I can't see much wrong with this film, other than a slightly contrived ending. Always puts a smile to my face.
2. Last Unicorn--As mentioned in this thread.
3. Beauty and the Beast--I liked a lot when it first came out, and while time has slightly aged this film, it is still one of Disney's better efforts.
4. Dumbo--Technically, this is a better overall film than BATB, but it's too lean at times. Things don't get developed as satisfyingly as they should. But it's definitely from a time when Disney was edgier.
5. Mobile Suit Gundam Movie III. It's the third part of the Gundam movie trilogy, and it ROCKS! Chronicling the last third of the Mobile Suit Gundam TV series, it puts a new spin on certain events and unlike the previous two films, this one is pretty much completely reanimated from scratch, so it's a much different interpretation of a great story.

I have not heard of this one, new to me. Thank you for listing it, and I will try to get a copy of it to watch and check out for myself....oldtoonguy
Some great ideas here, I do wish to keep this going because, I am getting so many good ideas here. I think that is what this is all about. Thank you all.....oldtoonguy
Disneys Sleeping Beauty - The story itself is nothing, a rather boring fairytale, but the fairies and the witch make the story! I love the way the fairies are, they are so funny! And the witch is genuinly EVIL! She scared the crap out of me when I was a kid and I still get goodbumps when her eerie theme music is on
Akira - The first anime I saw ( besides from "Panda" which I really enjoyed as a kid ) Kickbutt animation and awesome soundtrack and action! A tad long but after a couple of times you don't notice.
MOTP - I was blown away and confused at the same time. It intruiged me and I watched it 3 times in a row one day. I think I must have seen that movie 20 times atleast
The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast - Can they count as one? I can't choose
:p
Streetfighter II TAM - It just blew me away and made me a even bigger anime fan!
Great list. Now I just gotta see all the gems I havn't seen yet!

You're not weird. I meant they weren't the sort of movies I'd like to watch repeatedly, which is how I'm judging "favorites." If this was a "greatest" list, I'd put "Grave of the Fireflies" first no question.
"Thief and the Cobbler" was the dream project of animator Richard Williams, the guy who directed all the animated sequences in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Production actually started back in the '60s, but the film wasn't released until 1995 after Williams lost control of the project and it was finished (pretty badly) by another company.
The actual film itself is, uh, interesting. The story is pretty simple, about a thief and a cobbler in an Arabian style universe who get mixed up with the takeover plot of an evil vizier, and so on. Half the time the animation is spectacular, with these insane M.C. Escher-styles action sequences and some great characters. The problem is you can tell it's really unfinished and the patch-up work is just lousy. The finishing company essentially did a hack job on the original material, added some song numbers, made a mute character have a running narrative, etc. Still worth a look for the animation, but just be prepared to sludge through some gunk first.
