View Full Version : Oops! No Dilbert, Clerks for ASC...

...or, at least, not for a VERY long time now, so just get those thoughts out of your head. According to a press release from Comedy Central (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51302), they now own the rights to both of those shows (as well as "Gary & Mike" and "Undergrads" but I don't know anything about those shows or even if they're animated or not).

For those wondering, they'll be airing ALL six episodes of Clerks in one fell swoop on Sunday, December 22nd at 9AM. No word on if they'll be uncut, uncut with minor edits, or the hacked-up ABC versions, though (and I'm not familiar enough with the uncut versions to even know if they could be aired uncut).

Define "a long time."

Comedy Central tends to stop airing cartoons after only a couple of months. They come and go in small spurts.

Kevin Smith likely still has the rights to the Clerks cartoon and its characters. Just not the episodes that Miramax made. If he wants to do a second season, he still can, for whatever network is willing.

Agh. Now CC is trying to take on Adult Swim? All they have is a bunch of cancelled shows. Except for South Park, and they'll most likely use that as a lure. Since when was Adult Swim popular enough to spawn competition anyway? I thought AS was the most unpopular thing on TV.

BTW, Clerks wasn't hacked up. ABC made only one cut.

Okay, but you didn't mention Dilbert.

Just because they're not showing it, doesn't mean they don't have the rights to it. Escaflowne hasn't aired for years, and Slayers never aired, but the rights to those are still out of CN's reach. Is this situation different somehow?

And good point about future episodes.

Really? As I said, I'm not familiar with the uncut versions, and all I've actually seen of it was one episode on ABC. But it seemed fairly clean, and given the fact that the DVD is labeled as "uncut" and was given a R rating (if I recall correctly), I figured there was quite a bit missing from the broadcast version.

If that's not the case, then I apologize for my incorrect assumption.

It's included. Read the release.

On Clerks, I remember reading something about how MTV was looking like they might pick it up after the Sell Out comes out. I kinda wish that ASC would beat them to it, but I dunno if it'll be likely.

EDIT: Found the link. I read it at this place (http://movies.yahoo.com/shop?d=hp&cf=prev&id=1808403484) but that was reported over a year ago and the movie doesn't come out till '04, so who knows what'll happen.

If I remember correctly, I think Undergrads was on MTV. I remember they had a show on Sunday nights about 4 guys that go to college. From what I saw, it didn't look like anything real special. For the most part, it was about "getting tail". I don't know how many episodes are made of this show, but MTV certainly didn't show it for a long time (but then again, they are known for showing a new show for a short period of time and unless it becomes extremely popular, they usually cancel the show).

It seems odd that CC would air a one time only marathon of Clerks. What's the point of purchasing the reruns if they are only going to show them once? If anything, they could show one episode a week and repeat them a couple of times. At least that way, it would last for a few months.

CC'll reair them from time to time, just not very often.

The Clerks DVD is rated R because of the bonus material. The actual cartoons are no more "adult" than Aqua Teens or Sealab, and there'd be no reason why CN would edit them. They were made specifically to be aired on ABC, so they wouldn't be edited. And the DVD is "uncensored," not "uncut," but I think that was 1) partly just a marketing gimmick, and 2) referring to the "behind the scenes" stuff of the show on the DVD. Seriously though, for those who have not seen them, if you like Williams Street shows, or ASC for that matter, and any Kevin Smith movie their worth at least a rental. They would fit in perfectly in Adult Swim, but I doubt, especially now, we will ever see them. But then again, I was never hopeful.

Ah, I see. Sorry for the mistake.

Just out of curiosity, what was the "one cut" that lfv mentioned ABC made?

There was a single cut,,in the ABC version of "trapped" (episode 2) the "flintstones list" scene was cut, and all we heard was audio. On the dvd/video the video of flintstones list is intact.

Mmm.. Dilbert and Clerks. (orgasm)

Undergrads was also quite good, and Gary and Mike was uhm.. average.

I can't wait.

Maybe we'll see a resurrection of the animation block, and hopefully a rerunning of the Critic, even if i have seen each episode about 20 times. Unfortunately, Dr. Katz is out of the question, as CC no longer owns the rights. Still, any animation is good animation, and that's what VCR's were made for.

Who owns the rights to Dr. Katz? I was actually thinking about this show today, and how awesome it would be if it got rerun somewhere, or put on DVD or something. Does anyone know if there is a chance of this show ever being released again to the public in some way?

I think the rights have reverted back to Soup2Nuts. I know that CC doesn't have them anymore, I e-mailed them in July.

Clerks is already on DVD.

Undergrads is coming to DVD...eventually.

Gary and Mike was all right; nothing to get too excited about.

Dilbert...man, how I've missed it.

Don't get too attached to this arrangement: this is only the next crop of cartoons to (eventually) get dumped by CC, like:

The Critic
Bob and Margaret
Dr. Katz
The Tick
Duckman (I'm still pissed at CC for getting rid of this)

Well, this kinda sucks. Now I'm stuck choosing between whatever's on Adult Swim this February at midnight (I'm guessing Futurama) and Dilbert! :(

Hmm, maybe I could convince my dad into taping Dilbert on the TV downstairs, while my TV upstairs tapes Adult Swim like it always does...

 mY BrAiN hUrTs!! :p

A few weeks ago, I caught both The Critic and Duckman early in the morn on CC. I don't think they're gone yet.

What is this Gary and Mike show that everyone keeps talking about? When did it air and on what network was it on?

It was on UPN in the winter of '01. It was also on MTV a few times. I've never seen it, but my friends said good things.

Hurray Clerks on a non-evil network in its entire glory in a marathon. Now all the Unbelievers will have to believe in Clerks. :p And for now I will watch the dvd's in a marathon run style. ;)

Is there some unwritten rule that all prime-time cartoons have to air only on sundays? Pretty soon we're going to have Adult Swim Comedy, TNNs block, CCs block, and Fox's block all on sunday and nothing else all week outside of ASA, Noggins edited Daria and South Park (not counting Simpsons and King of the Hill syndication reruns). Kinda wish we could see some of these shows spread out more thoughout the week rather then crambed into one night.

Oh well, atleast we'll be seeing some more underappreciated shows given a second chance on T.V.

I was hoping Kevin Smith..who is a fan of adult comic content ...might see his way to making a deal with AS. Especially in light of the ABC fiasco. I find it disapointing so many good mature themed cartoons are languishing in storage somewhere. I miss Dr Katz, Clerks, The Maxx, the head etc. I know most of then will remain MIA...but what a shame when they have a forum now.

Clerks is going to be on Comedy Central, it won't be languishing anywhere. Besides, who doesn't own the Clerks DVD, anyway?
