Barbara's mom-details please?

What's the story on Barbara Gordon's mother in the mainstream comics? Since I only follow animated stuff, I don't know diddly about Mrs. James Gordon. I assume she was killed (by who?) and that Jim was a widower until he married that cop Sarah...right?

Now, it's been a while since I've read the comics, so I may have some of this wrong. But, here's how I remember it:

Barbara is actually Jim Gordon's niece. I forget how here parents were killed, but Jim eventually adopted her. Barbara is named after her aunt, the former Mrs. Jim Gordon.

Jim's former wife divorced Jim and took their son with her. I don't know if they ever said what happened to her and their son.

Okay, here's what I know (some will be repeated):

Barbara Gordon is the daughter of Jim Gordon's brother (whose name escapes me, naturally). Barbara's parents were killed in a car accident, after which Jim Gordon adopted Barbara as his daughter. But as of GOTHAM KNIGHTS #6, there is a chance that Jim Gordon is Barbara's biological father. If this were true, Barbara's mother had Barbara with Jim, after which Barbara's mom married Jim Gordon's brother. None of this is for certain, however. But Barbara's mother had a close connection with Jim, and probably wrote him letters constantly. Also, Jim was said to have married Barbara "on the rebound."

That's all I know about that. Has anyone heard otherwise lately?
