Okay, who has seen the VeggieTales "Jonah", and who can give me a review?

don't even bother.

i think god, and cartoons, like state, and religion , should not mix.

besides, most of this channel who likes anime is shintoists, making christianity a pagan channel . sorry you probably wont get anyone here really liking that, but thanks for playing.

No offense, but I think other people have opinions before this topic is thrown out completely, and I don't think it's to anyone's shame if they like the movie. Just so anybody who reads this knows.

The whole 'anime viewers are usually shintoists' claim is the most ridiculous thing I've heard in awhile. :p

Oh where... is my hairbrush?

So you don't like anime that has Christian references or themes, such as Evangelion, The Big O, Cowboy Bebop (Brain Scratch) and several other primo anime titles? Just wondering.

And you don't like freedom of speech, allowing people to make films about whatever subject matter they like? Is that correct? Just curious.

In any case, you're certainly entitled to your opinion, but the poster of this thread is looking for opinions from people who have SEEN the movie, not speculation from people who haven't, so I don't really see your point in posting here.

And just for the record, I love Veggie Tales. It's one of the few totally clean, non-offensive, innocent things that can consistently make me laugh. But I also love Japanese animation as well as high-quality Western animation such as Spawn: TAS and Batman: TAS. So don't be too quick to generalize about what certain types of people do and don't like.

I agree with Mynd Hed, but as a mod let me just say we don't appreciate or tolerate the belittling of any opinion or poster on these boards, so please keep respectfull to each other, and on topic of the thread.

I've only seen the commercials for this movie, and I have to admit that prior to this, I'd NEVER heard of the Veggie Tales before. :p

What are they all about? Is it as obvious as the title implies?

It is actually a CGI Christian children's series that started out in Phil Vischer's spare bedroom in Chicago. Now, it is run by a company headed up by Vischer called "Big Idea Productions". They have a large staff comprised of experts in computer animation, music, etc. (Some of which have worked at major studios in the past.)

Their website is www.bigidea.com (http://www.bigidea.com/), I suggest you see some of the screenshots of their work.

Better yet, here's a coupla shots, courtesy IMDB.com:

(And I plan on seeing Jonah eventully.)

You're right - I didn't even think about the WBC board. I hope I'm not stepping on any mod-toes here, but I'm gonna move this over there.

> As I am not Christian, I have a pretty limited knowledge of Jonah, too. <

The story of Jonah is in the Old Testament, so Jewish people would know about him too. I think the general population at least knows that he was the guy who got swallowed by a "great fish" (usually translated as "whale", though some bibical scholars think it could've been a grouper or an uncommonly soft-mouthed shark.)

BTW: that notion that "god and cartoons shouldn't mix" seems awfully narrow-minded. As much so as "geography and cartoons shouldn't mix." "martial arts and cartoons shouldn't mix." "Australia and cartoons shouldn't mix." Etc...

I went to my local AMC 30 (To watch some Spirited Away which ROCKED!) and to my surprise there it was in front of me. Two men dressed up like The Tomato and Larry giving out cards about the movie. I got some cards and went to Spirited Away and right next to it was the uhhh place? Showing it and to my surprise TONS of people came out of it when it was done. For a movie which I saw practically no commercials for it had alot of people watching it here. Just thought i'd mention that. Veggietales!!

The name, "pirates who don't do anything", makes me laugh. Should I ask who they are and what they do? :P

They don't DO anything. As the song goes:
Narrator: "Joining Larry are Pa Grape and Mr. Lunt, who together make up the infamous gang of scalliwags, the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything!"
Larry, Pa, Mr. Lunt: "We are the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you ..."

Larry: "We don't do anything!"

Pa: "Well, I've never been Greenland and I've never been to Denver, and I've never buried treasure in St. Louis or St. Paul, and I've never been to Moscow and I've never been to Tampa, and I've never been to Boston in the fall."

All: "'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you ..."

Mr. Lunt: "We don't do anything. And I never hoist the mainstay and I never swab the poop deck, and I never veer to starboard 'cuz I never sail at all, and I've never walked the gang plank and I've never owned a parrot, and I've never been to Boston in the fall."

All: "'Cuz we're the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything! We just stay at home and lie around. And if you ask us to do anything, we'll just tell you ... We don't do anything!"

Larry: "Well, I've never plucked a rooster and I'm not too good at ping-pong, and I've never thrown my mashed potatoes up against the wall, and I've never kissed a chipmunk and I've never gotten head lice, and I've never been to Boston in the fall!"

Pa: "Huh? What are you talking about? What's a rooster and mashed potatoes have to do with being a pirate??"

Mr. Lunt: "Hey, that's right! We're supposed to sing about pirate-y things!"

Larry: "Oh ..."

Pa: "And who ever kissed a chipmunk? That's just nonsense! Why even bring it up? Am I right? What do you think?"

Mr. Lunt: "I think you look like Cap'n Crunch!"

Pa: "Huh? No I don't!"

Mr. Lunt: "Do too."

Pa: "Do not!"

Mr. Lunt: "You're making me hungry."

Pa: "That's it, you're walkin' the plank!"

Mr. Lunt: "Says who?"

Pa: "Says the captain, that's who!"

Mr. Lunt: "Oh, yeah? Aye aye, Cap'n Crunch!"

Larry: "And I've never licked a spark plug and I've never sniffed a stink bug, and I've never painted daisies on a big red rubber ball, and I've never bathed in yogurt and I don't look good in leggings ..."

Pa: "You just don't get it!"

All: "And we've never been to Boston in the fall!"

Pa: "Pass the chips! Who's got the remote control?"

Larry: "Here is is!"

Mr. Lunt: "Time for Geraldo!"

Pa: "It's definitely time for Wapner."

Mr. Lunt: "Oh, I don't like this show ..."

Veggietales had the second-highest per-theater count of all the movies this weekend, and that's including Red Dragon and The Tuxedo.

It did FABULOUS, getting #6 with $6 million, with only 940 theaters (in comparison to The Tuxedo, who had the same per-theater count and, at 2100 theaters, placed #2 with 21 million).

If it expands to more theaters, it should continue to do better.

I wish someone would make a cartoon promoting the Jewish religion or at least starring a Jewish character :(
Oh wait! Someone just did. Thank Goodness for Adam Sandler and his "Eight Crazy Nights" :D :D

Ein, I'll be singing this all day long now.

By the By, VeggieTales is fabulous, I grew up in Church, I love anime, was big into anime before I ever saw VeggieTales (end of High school) and I still love them both.

Why shouldn't animation and religion mix? I think it's appropriate for cartoons to go with relgion, as long as they don't make a mockery of it.

I mean, what about The Greatest Adventure: Stories from the Bible video series from H-B? They did a good job putting 20th Century people in Biblical times.

PS: Jonah did not bomb compared to Red Dragon, as it was seen in 25% of the theatres.

I think it would be ridiculous for any anime fan to argue animation and religion should not mix, that would keep out most anime out of this country ("Spirited Away" certainly must be rooted in the Shintoist world view).

Frankly, I've never seen VeggieTales (I haven't frequented general video rental stores, particularly lately, and I believe the series is purely a direct-to-video phenomenon). However, I've heard a lot of positive buzz about the series for some years now.

(Incidentally, I would not be surprised if "Spirited Away" ends up in general release, if its box office keeps growing every week. Disney certainly hasn't been hiding it, I've seen commercials airing on the movie.)

Getting back to topic....

Jonah is now #6 in the listings, and most reviews on IMDB.com are positive, especially about the animation. (I'm sure it beats Jimmy Neutron. -shudder-)

What I want to know is, can somebody please go treat themselves to an evening at the movies, and offer a proffessional amateur opinion? It's not over here in Belgium.
