Wasn't this short awfully similar to Disney's THE ROBBER KITTEN?

I've never heard of that one before, but since I'm not a big Disney cartoon watcher, what is that one about? "Fagin's Freshman" isn't a real good cartoon, but watchable. Are the storylines pretty identical?

The storylines are somewhat identical. Both kittens are named Ambrose, but in ROBBER KITTEN, Ambrose's nickname is Butch instead of Blackie.
Both kittens are interested in crime and run away from home (except in FAGIN'S FRESHMAN, Blackie is only dreaming). Both kittens meet up with a criminal. At the end of both cartoons, they are both scared straight.
So yes, FAGIN'S FRESHMAN and THE ROBBER KITTEN basically
have the same storyline.

"Fagin's Freshman" always seemed Disney-like to me, and it really could be more so if they'd allowed it 1 or 2 more minutes and scrapped the dream idea. It's disappointing to me, because the cat gets into the mess he's in, but we don't see it really resolved. Too abrupt.

Cartman and y'all~
Actually there is a link between the House of Mouse's "Robber Kitten" and "Fagin's Freshman" . In fact it would appear to be a two-fold one. One part is good ol' Charlie Thorson, who was in training at D*sn*y just as "The Robber Kitten" was finishing production. Like everyone else he had ample exposure to the finished cartoon. His real work at D*sn*y started immediately after the release of "Robber..." and since he was placed in the STORY dept. he likely was exposed to leftover elements of it there also. While in the story department there (and long after) his best friend was storyman (and Pluto voice) Pinto Colvig. Did Colvig work on or contribute to "Robber Kitten"?? Good question... It's possible he contributed something to it at some point But he definitely had exposure to its creation. At Schlesinger's Thorson worked as character designer for his newfound close friend Bugs Hardaway (as well as for Chuck). Colvig joined Thorson at Schlesinger's and it is extremely probable that the two former D*sn*yites worked on the character design and development (and likely the story) with Ben Hardaway on "Fagin's Freshman"...
