Nickelodeon will be premiering a Rugrats spin off series called All Growed Up, which will feature the main cast in their tween years (which, according to Nick) is 11 - 12. The series will also play off the success of the 'All Growed Up' special from last year and will feature flashbacks to fill in the time gaps. For more info, check out http://news.toonzone.net

I heard that on the radio on my way to school (I'm not kidding. It's obviously big news to the folks at 97.9 WRMF  ). The attention-getter at the beginning of the report was... interesting...

I quote: "The Rugrats, which have been on the air for ten years, will be trading in their diapers for... training bras?..."

Personally--and this is just my opinion--I think this series isn't going to do as well as its predecessor. Most spin-offs don't, actually. After all, (most) originals have that charm that just can't be carried over to another series.

The most succesful spinoff for cartoon and live action was the Simpsons, which, ironically, was, back then, animated by Klasky-Cpuso, who does Rugrats. Now, some non-Simpsons fans are proabably going, "The Simpsons are a spinoff?" Yes, off the Tracey Ullman Show, where they premiered as shorts/fillers...maybe the Rugrats spinoff may do good...just a bit of useless triva related somewhat to the topic...

Meh, it seems ok, but it won't have the same impact as the original.

I had heard of the Simpsons played as shorts on the Tracey Ullman Show, but I never thought of it as a spin-off.

Heh, good point, though.

My guess: they'll cancel this by the second season if that.

Who wants to bet this becomes just another "Middle School" cartoon?

Though it would be something if they modeled this after Degrassi Junior High. heh heh

Perhaps it won't be horrible (not likely, I know). Middle School cartoons don't have to be all bad. I had this strange sort of attachment to Detention. That and Pepper Ann. But I've said enough allready. :) Did they cancel Pepper Ann?

I think that Rugrats is being stretched too thin. For years they've been adding more and more characters (usually, the sudden addition of new characters is a sure sign that a show is starting to go downhill fast) and now they're making a bunch of spin-offs! The Grown-up episode was good for a special (if you muted that HORRIBLE song at the end) but the idea of seeing the Rugrat kids act like As Told by Ginger or DeGrassi characters makes me ill >_<

I think there's too much of Rugrats as it is. I do NOT want to see another series.

A series about "all growed up" Rugrats? Didn't they already make Rocket Power?

Do they know something about Tommy, Chucky, Phil and Dils personal life that we don't??

If the average episode of the series is as good as the "All Growed Up" special, then this show could actually be pretty darn good. But I guess that depends on if you liked the special or not.

I'm glad it's going to this. They can't have them be babies forever. Chuckie is just starting too talk. Imagine how many more seasons their would be before Tommy started talking.

Pepper Ann was canceled about two years ago. Currently it airs late night on Toon Disney, along with Disney's other recent crap-o-rama. (Sabrina, Teamo Supremo, Doug, Teacher's Pet, etc.)

Pepper Ann was'nt axed, it reached a natural end and had it's own series finale.

You know, of all the grown-up rugrats, only Kimi looks like a knockout..(god I hope that's printable here)

Aww, but I think it would be funny to see Tommy and Dil trying to look at porn or Phil and Lil finding out their dad is gay. XD

My friend made up another, more mature version of Rugrats when they are about 16-18 callled Rugrats All Screwed Up. Heh heh.

Well anyway I know it won't be as successful as the original Rugrats, and I agree with an above poster saying that it most likely will last two seasons. This show will have short term ratings, for the people who enjoyed the All Growed Up special and maybe fans who haven't seen the special. After that, I think people will get tired of it.

After the two movies came out, I stopped paying attention to the show because of Dil and Kimmy. I don't like how they had to be added.

So I guess that Angelica and Susie's show is coming out the same time right? Personally, I think rather than adding new characters like crazy, I think they should have just used Susie more.

Well, at least it wasn't cancelled. Sad to see it go, though. What was the end like? I'm fairly sure I haven't seen anything that felt like a series ender.

Was just curious: will this new "Rugrats" series be set in the future, as IIRC that "Growed Up" special was (though I didn't get the chance to see it), or will it just look to be set in the present (with the original series just assumed to be taking place at some point in the past)? Yeah, I know, I actually thought about it/have too much time/etc. ;-)

As for expectations, figure it can't be any worse an idea than "Baby Looney Tunes" (albeit going in the opposite direction)....though it probably resembles those spinoffs of sitcoms like "The New <insert original show's name here>" where the kids of the original cast members/whatever are seen...though I suppose a better example from the animation world would be the Flintstones spinoffs featuring the teenage versions of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (which seemed successful enough a presentation of them to last through several spinoff incarnations through the 70's/80's).

The special was great and the last couple of seasons after the first movie just really lack something so I'm glad. I happen to like all the middle school shows. Pepper Ann,Disney's Doug Recess,The Weekenders, and Filmore.

The only thing I dislike is they all just end for absolutely NO reason. The ratings don't suck or anything. Everything goes good and then all of a sudden, let's just make a stupid Series ender episode. Gahh..I'm depressed that all my favorite shows end, while stuff like Friends seems to last forever.

Oh and for a summary of the Pepper Ann series closer check out www.TVTOME.com

Hold on, someone else watches The Weekenders? I thought I was the only one because it's so underrated and nobody talks about it. That is one funny show. Too bad I discovered it a little too late, (In other words, recently, in Rerun Hell on Toon Disney).

Recess does make a good filler show, when you're waiting for something else to come on.

Don't know what to expect from this new series but I just hope It won't be an "As Told by Genger" clone..

Although I agree the original Rugrats series has lost its charm over the last episodes or so (most of them I hadn't watched admittedly), I do think that this new Growed Up series has merit, or at least is quite interesting. To actually have a show that, partially at least, follows real time and has the characters grow up is an ambitious and intriguing idea.

My only problem with it is that, well, they're no longer Rugrats anymore. The best thing about the Rugrats series was the unique perspective of reality that the characters had. Now that they're older, they should be more in tune with reality - so no more neat, super close-up opening camera shots, no more cute mispronunciations and potentially no more Rugrats-ian 'mouth' music. But, on the other hand, we'll be getting new unique Rugrats-ian quirks!

This series will most likely be almost completely different, except with the same characters we, for the most part, have grown to love. Which could be a good thing for the franchise. And if they can pull it off (which I'll say they did partially in All Growed Up), I'm all for it!

PS - I love the flashback idea! I have a feeling I'm really going to enjoy those :D

Weekender's was my "favorite" cartoon. We've had a few threads about the show here if you do a search. I've come to learn that no matter what cartoon you discover your NEVER alone.

I don't consider The Simpsons a true spinoff. A true spinoff (IMO) basically takes one or more characters who starred in a few episodes of a show and builds another show around them. When The Simpsons was on the Tracey Ullman Show, they were already largely indepedent from the host show. In fact, the Tracey Ullman Show basically showcased The Simpsons as a possible show unto itself.

Melrose Place, Batman Beyond, Angel, and I think even Daria are what I consider reasonably successful spinoff shows. I'm sure there are tons of others.

BTW---They're not seriously planning on naming this new series "All Growed Up" are they? By using improper grammar, it gives the impression that the show is still closely connected with the original's "toddler" mentality, which shouldn't be the case if this show is planning to stand on its own two legs as a middle school show. In fact, they should make a harder effort at distinguishing this show from its parent show as much as possible. You can only milk the connection so far before people want to see how this spinoff really stands on its own.

There was something that bothered me a bit in the special. Why was DiDi the only one of the parents who seemed to age or change at all?
The spin-off sounds like a REALLY bad idea. But the special was OK so I guess I'll wait for the premier to judge it.

P.S. I LOVE The Weekenders too :D I was sad to hear that they were sent to Toon Disney re-run hell :(
