View Full Version : Heads up Toonzoners: So did BB (and the WB DC toons) ruin Zeta for many of you?

I mean these cartoons raised the standard of American action catrtoons. With quality, animation, and writing they redefined whay we expect. I believe that when many Zeta detractors ridicule it they do because, they are comparing it to the show that came before it (and from which it was spun off.) Which again, in the opinion of the majority was at aa much higher level of quality (my own opinion is among those.)
Another thing, with many of the same writers, animators, and directors that worked on BB are now at work on Zeta did you expect more from them? Like the next blockbuster (in the same vein as BTAS, Superman and BB have been run away hits.) Istead in the words of some we get "Comic hijinks."
So what do you think of the question I pose. Did the KWB action toons of the 90's spoil us?

I've tried watching "Zeta" and "Static Shock" and "X-Men: Evolution" and "Men in Black." That's after trying to watch whatever that "Spiderman" show is that's on Fox, and "X-Men" from the mid-90s, and "Gargoyles." None of them held my attention for more than 3 episodes.
Only "Superman" holds a candle to "Batman." The common denominator seems to be Bruce Timm.

I don't think I would have ever been interested in Zeta, whether or not I had ever seen any of the Batman cartoons.

Joey, I think you've got a point... people are being a bit hard on Zeta because of its Batman connections. The show isn't the worst thing on the planet. However, the show IS toothless and boring, and it's not something I would want to devote 30 minutes of my life to.

I disagree on Gargoyles. I think its probably one of two quality cartoons disney has ever made. The second being Darkwing Duck which spun off of Ducktales so nicely. Anyhow, the season 1 animation was especially good. The characters like Elisa Maza could fit right into the style of BTAS. There were some nice multiple story arcs and good voice acting. The dialogue wasn't half bad and they did a good job of tying many shakespearean characters together. The show suffered a bit from repetitive music though. Does anyone else agree with me that Gargolyes was a really good show?

Gargoyles is the only thing that makes me wish I had Toon Di$ney. The only downside is that I've been told that TD has edited Gargoyles quite badly, even editing out one episode that had a great message about gun violence (and also has an impact on several episodes following) because it had gun related violence.
Gargoyles, now there's a series that should be released in a nice DVD box set.
As for the Zeta Project, it's ok but I do think I would enjoy it more if they done as the creator had intended, and left the show in it's own little universe.

It was a great cartoon until it went to ABC and it just got...well...bad. Zeta isn't aimed at our "group", but for the 2 - 11 set, and the mature tone isn't there either, so I ain't too worried about it. It's a kiddie show. Nothing more.

Well first I was going to say an easy obvious "of course!!" to the simple fact that Batman and Superman (I'm refering to BB included whenever I say this little phrse) ruined cartoons and make the lives of X-Men Evolution and Static Shock much more difficult. I've come to analyze and realize this. But something said about editing Gargoyle episodes made me weep extensively.
I will NEVER forget that gun control episode of Gargoyles. It was an absolute masterpiece. I can't believe they edited it!! That is a horrid outrage!!! I don't care if it's goofy ole "toon disney". When I read that quote above, I immediately remembered the episode, and screamed louder than a DBZ character powering up for 20 minutes of an episode. *weep*

That episode, arguably one of the best Gargoyles episodes ever, can be be purchased unedited. A few years back, Disney released five or six compilation tapes, two 2 or 3 episodes on each tape, and that gun episode was feature don it in it's unedited glory. It's amazing how things change in cartoons over a few scant years.
I'm suprised WB hasn't gone back and re-edited some Batman Beyond eps.

That's good news. But my lord, you'd think if a show's content didn't kill anyone years ago then it wouldn't be necessary to go back and screw it up today.
Oh well, who am I to talk. I could never be a network executive. I have a brain in my head.
