Jerry Beck posted his comments on the Popeye Minute Maid commercial @ www.cartoonresearch.com

I think "Commerical Closet" has it all wrong!

This cartoon borrows a lot from It's The Natural Thing To Do (The thing that gives it away is the Fleischer-style animation.)

Another thing on the ad...

They made it look like unrestored Technicolor...nice touch!

I think that website has WAY too much time on their hands. They must have mistaken the object of the ad, because the object is that they both drank the orange juice and it made the happy all day, and it takes a pretty good orange juice to keep Popeye and Bluto from fighting. They normally HATE each other. I haven't seen the ad, but someone told me about it, and they thought it was funny, and the whole "gay innuendo" thing never crossed their mind. Besides, they're not gay, or they wouldn't have spent 70 + years fighting over Olive.

It's like those trying to claim Bugs Bunny is a gay transvestite (and one site goes into the possibilities of him being castrated too...), they basically take something and screw with the intentions. The creators have said that they never meant for Bugs to be perceived in that way, and I don't think it was meant for that orange juice commercial to be seen in the same light either.

That's a neat avatar, Patrick. How did you get it?

Ain't likely. Aren't the Florida Orange people the same ones who hired Anita Bryant? Hardly the most gay-friendly woman on the planet. Rush Limbaugh was their spokesman for a while, too; I don't know if RL is a homophobe, but he does tend to hang with them. I can't see this as gay innuendo.

'Course, I've never seen the ad, either.

There was another nautical phrase I could have used, and be thankful I didn't!

PM me, though, if you 're reeeeeeeeeeally curious to hear it.

Maybe the ol' sailor man has been at sea too long. That may explain the appearance of his short-lived buddy Shorty.

I'm trying desperately not to think how he acquired that diminutive appellation. O demon of naughty thoughts, do not taunt me.
