I feel as if the modern education system is much overrated as the most important and focal point of concentration in youth. Our society puts so much pressure on the youth to learn the trivial knowledge that education provides. Why is such a formal education so damn important? Is it so that we raise our children to act and think and express the same ideas as everyone else as not to lead to conflicts in our society? So we all have the same hopes and dreams and desires? If so, then this is one major threat to idividuality. What is education today if not a process of pumping meaningless knowledge and labor attitudes into the youth in order to produce robots for society which hunt and live for jobs so to buy **** they don't need. Is the purpose pure and strictly for our well-being? I feel as if the education system might be leading teenagers and young adults into the opposite direction of what is really needed to be learned.
Any thoughts on this?

This is a little extreme. If you're against what our youth education system currently provides, then what would you have it provide? What would you rather have teens do? I'd say that a formal education is important, to say the least. While some of the knowledge taught in schools may seem trivial, the majority of it is important, especially for those seeking jobs, futures, etc. The purpose of a formal education is to properly train kids for jobs and efforts in the real world.

Well High School can never educate kids for any job, no eduactional system can. Only the empolyer can give the skills needed. All the formal education system can do it teach kids how to learn, think and possibly give the building blocks for the employer to work with which really can be self tought.

Most of what is learned after around fourth grade is not needed as an adult. Many school subjects, such as history, and worse yet, physical education, are not needed for a lot of jobs.

Well phys ed is to teach ya how to stay in shape. History is also nice, schools put too much value on dates and name and not enough on what was going on so we don't repeat the mistakes of the past.

I don't know what kind of jobs you're thinking of, but I would definitely say that a proper education is very important in the job market. For one thing, it shows that a person has self-discipline and tenacity. Secondly, if you're interested into going into any kind of science, employers are certainly looking for someone who has more than a rudimentary knowledge of subjects such as math, physics, biology, etc. As for history, I would assume that as members of the human race, as well as residents of the planet Earth, we would all have an interest in what happened before we were here.

I don't think formal education really impresses employers much.

Actully no but it is still important as those that don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Knowledge of history allow us to have a grasp of what is going on today. IE if you are aginst Bush's Missle Defence you could point out the Great Wall of China just made the invaders want it more yet this reference is useless if people don't know the history of the great wall. Also there are connections to the past ie Isreal can be linked to WWII that can be linked to WWI that can be linked to the British blockaid of Germany that can be linked to the arms build up of Germany. So without knowledge of history your view of the present is very limmited.

To be able to carry on a conversation with anyone beyond "Dude." an education is pretty importat.
To be able to do more then "1+1=2" an education is pretty important.
To be able to do a job right the first time and be able to take and interperate the directions give to you by your boss at work, an education is pretty important.
Most of us have no clue as to how mocg of that "trivial information" we subconciously use every day. We use long math, algebra and even a bit of calc every day, we just don't realize it.
