View Full Version : Beer- what's so great about it?

Okay, I think my sister, with the help of a "friend", has started taking up drinking- she's just turned 18. Now, if that's what she wants to do, that's fine- but what's so great about a cold can of piss? I mean, the stuff smells terrible, and I was three when I accidentally sipped some I thought was my Sprite, and it tastes worse than it smells! So, to those who may know, what's so freakin' fantastic about beer? The altered vision of the world it gives you, making everyone beautiful? The oh-so-pleasant smell it leaves on your breath??

Sounds like you had cheap American beer made with corn andrice insteed of pure barley. I personally do not drink, but I do know that if and when I do, it will be good beer brewed more or less to the German purity laws. No macro-brew million gallon-a-day factory crud for me. Also, your sister is, quite frankly, an idiot. I hope she's at least drinking with just her friend and in moderation, rather then getting drunk at parties and *beep* like that. Bad stuff happens when you start doing that. :(

American beer tastes like water ;)

I dunno. I drink socially (ie at parties), and even then, most of my friends don't like beer much either. But I don't mind it. I guess it's an acquired taste.

It's fun on occasion, because it's something different (Everything seems funny and beautiful when you're drunk somehow), but it's definitely not something that should be done frequently... especially since the last time I got drunk...uhh...

And people ask why I don't drink.

Tnings look funny and beautiful when drunk? Ya know, things look pretty funny and beautiful to me and I'm completely sober. I even remember it later without being to what I did! :p

I drink, but for the longest time I wouldn't touch beer. I had a couple sips when I was young (my father would let me sip it to see what it tastes like), then I had a few in college. And I just couldn't stand the stuff - far too bitter for me. So, I stuck with hard liquor and mixed drinks for the most part. But about a year ago, I just had a hankering for a beer - no idea why - its like when you have a Big Mac attack. And when I went and tried one again, I liked it. Guess I somehow acquired the taste. Now, I'll have a beer on occassion, but I still stick mostly to the hard stuff.

 And your fans here didn't already have enough to get excited about! ;)

You can never convince me to drink. The most stupid thing I have drank was some robotussin, a friend of mine in high school got me to drink a bottle once, and that was enough for me. Not only do I hate the smell, but I have actually tried some alcohol once, and just hated the taste of it. Add that to the fact that everybody I know who got drunk would end up acting like a total moron, I'd prefer to keep my facilites in hand.

alcohol isn't that bad occasionally. i just really hate seeing these idiots who get drunk off their ass, vomitting and all that and they can barely move around. then the next day they complain about their hangover and all that. that's abuse. but a little beer is nice, makes me happy :D

Concidering the male population on these boards...Nightflower, I think you just made social drinking the new popular fad around here....

There are some sweet alcoholic drinks, or fruity ones. I personally dont like to drink or get drunk. But there are a few that are quite good. :D

But in no way do I ever want to have my head in a toilet ever. So, I tend to stay away from drinking beer and the like. ;) I'm extremely sober..despite what everyone believes...

For the last year or so I've mostly been drinking Cider Jack. It tastes better than beer, and none of the heartburn that I get from alcoholic lemonade. I never really got into beer all that much in the first place, taking mixed drinks over it when I started out. I'll take beer if there's no alternative, but I prefer Cider Jack or a mixed drink.

I don't see anything wrong with drinking as long as you do it in moderation. Anyone with some brains can stop short of making themselves sick with it.

I'm 100 % pure. I don't drink at all. Not even cafeine but once in 8th grade...

One week everyone started bringing alcohol to school. I don't know why, they just did. So in a quest to find out what makes alcohol so good to everyone I actually took sips of everything, everyone brought in. No where near enough to get my drunk or even tipsy and the majority of it burned my throat or just tasted nasty. I thought ,maybe I was just sipping the wrong stuff so I went home tasted some of the stuff we had at home, same thing. ( note- This happened over a span of a week, so it's not like I tasted all this in one day)

All of it either burned or was just nasty and from that point on I never even was inticed to drink, no one could pressure me or tell me I wouldn't have any fun without it. I mean if you need to alter your mind or drink to enjoy your self at a party the party must suck. I've been to tons of parties no drinking and always hada good time. I can let go of my inhabitions on my own. :)

I still don't understand why people pay good money to either burn there throats, has the same taste as Seltzerwater and kills brain cells. I would understand a little bit if it tasted good but it doesn't (and the stuff that tastes good can be duplicated in a non alcoholic form). Someone told me it's not suposed to tasre good, it's suposed to get you drunk. And if that's the point then count me out.

I've only been to one party where the objective was to drink your self stupid and get high and I and this girl I knew from school left the party to go hang out at my house. I guess when your sober those kind of parties are no fun.

On beer.. It smells bad and most likely tastes bad. I won't even touch the non-alcoholic stuff.

Heh, I know pleanty of girls you can get to do that with out drinking. Although it's alot better when you get them to do that with you without the aid of alcohol, I mean for one you'll remember it happened.

like I said all the sweet or good tasting drinks have virgin counterparts. Drinking to get drunk is just stupid IMO. I have alot of stuff going on that I don't need getting out just because I had a few to many Whiskey sours.

American beer is alright. I prefer a German beer. However, I am really a wine (more specfically, red wine) and champagne type of guy. A beer here and there is alright in my book.

Any situation is an instant party -- just add beer. ;)

I'm not surprised those of you who have only had brief experiences with beer (a sip here, a taste there, a bottle of Nyquil here) don't like it. It can be bad-tasting for beginners. As far as I can tell, beer has only one downside.

Ask yourself the same question in a few years and you'll be surprised why you asked.... :)

I love beer. The taste is refreshing - espeicially larger. I enjoy the ale as well, but I seem to trapped on larger. Carlsberg or Foster. It's a London drink I just can't shrug off...!

Saying that I have a pack of Boddington beer by my chair. One of the nicest ales.

I'm not going to go into the details of the pros and cons of inerbreation but I'll let you work that one out for yourselves.

Enjoy beer. Learn your limit, treat it with respect and it can bring a great deal of fun. Don't abuse it or you'll end up abusing yourself.

I don't understand what's so great about beer, either. If you're out to get drunk (but why???) or just loosen up a little, I'd much prefer to have something a little tastier. Then again, when I have drunk beer, I always drink Molson Canadian; those commercials really do work.

I don't touch the stuff - I think it's nasty (then again, once I get older I might appreciate it, but for the time being......). I'd usually go for a wine cooler or something....

My mom and dad tricked me into drinking it once and it tasted like ear wax. Don't ask me how I know what ear wax tastes like. :p But, anyhow, maybe you should talk to your sister about what you feel about her taking up drinking. And try to be honest as possible.

I kinda don't get beer either. If it's all you can afford to drink, it's okay, but it takes like ten times as much to get you drunk. I used to drink pretty heavily, but when I turned 21 it was just no fun anymore (plus I got alcohol poisoning from Everclear mixed with Pepsi...I chased it with beer but to no avail). As for your sister, maybe just talk to her and explain you're kinda worried.

Heh. I want one of those Gold Medal T-Shirts.

Anyway, I'm not much of an alcohol person. I've tried a lot of different Alcoholic beverages, and I didn't find too many of them appealing. Besides the fact that my family has a bad history of Alcoholism, I've had too many bad experiences with drunks to ever want to make drinking a way of life. Alcohol's just not that interesting to me.

What I don't understand is how people get drunk so easily. In the keg parties we go to half of my friends automatically get drunk off the first beer. It takes us a lot longer. My more experienced friends don't even get hangovers anymore. Even after so much beer, there still up. I am a social drinker. I don't drink to get drunk.
Question, how many of you have gotten drunk and were under aged?

Nightflower, was the chick hot? :D

Beer... Can make ya feel nothing because when you do feel something you're too drunk to know what the heck it is so you just pass it off as "nothing."

I've tried beer, not bad tasting, but I'm sticking to cold Dr. Pepper and Vanilla Cokes. :D

I didn't mean to come off as if my sis is a raging alcoholic, she just goes off to her "friend's" place and has a couple. No matter what the amount, I still think it's not right. I'm totally against underage drinking. I think it's quite possibly the most stupid thing someone could do. I've seen too many people my age and younger die in car accidents due to this. I've seen too many kids come in my grocery store trying to run the stuff out the back door. I even saw a former friend of mine with an open 12 pack in the front seat of his car as he was going out to "party". I've got the same problem with alcohol as I do with weed- everyone says they need them to make something better, whether it be a party, concert, or other event. Heaven forbid you just enjoy something and remember it. I don't know, maybe I'm already an old man at the ripe age of 20  Those of you that are legal, drink on. Those not- think twice... JMHO...

Straight up I'm not reading any responces to this thread

If anyone here or anywhere else says, "I drink beer because I like the taste!" Call this guy a liar and kick him in the butt and send him on the way cause he is drinking because he thinks he looks cool

Bottomline people drink beer to get messed up or take advantage of women

I myself don't have a drinking problem and can go as long as I want without drinking it. I do enjoy putting away mass quanities of beer and riding the rollercoaster. I've had lots of fun adventures while drunk such as seeing Sting and the Million Dollar man talk about Jesus in wrestling promos. That was some great stuff look up that thread where I talked about that sometime

I also don't find drunk people funny or cool as I don't really drink that much and drunks piss me off.

I can drink a lot and not be a "Richard" to anyone cause I have total self control no matter what

2 summers ago at my friend's house he was having a keg party and this was probably a half hour after the party had started. I was there early just after they brought the keg in actually and started but I was on my 9th beer a half hour thru (these girls were counting for me) that was a good time

Nope, I'm definitely not a drinker. I'll have a beer or two here and there, but I've never gotten drunk and I never plan to either. I just don't see the fun in going out and drinking to get drunk... especially when I tend to act kinda goofy to start with. Though I feel it's pretty hard to avoid it, especially when a lot of people you know are into that stuff and keep egging you on to drink. That, and a person I know who goes to my college and sits in the group I hang with always seems to talk about drugs and alcohol, and everything related to it, like it's his life or something.

I'll respect other's wishes regarding drugs and alcohol; it's just that I can have a good time and even party hard while stone cold sober. Waking up the next day hunched over the commode isn't really my idea of "fun".

I don't drink. I was always taught by my parents never to drink. For one my parents were both brought up LDS, and according to the word of wisdom one must not drink any alcoholic beverage. And my Mom grew up on the rez., and her parents were heavy drinkers, and she didn't want that for her children. So she made an oath when she was very young that she would never ever drink, and she would do all that she could to prevent her children from doing so as well.

I personally have nothing against drinking. Unless it is done to an excess, and it leads somebody to drive drunk and kill people, or use alcohol to rape somebody, become alcoholics and abuse their children and the others around them, or anything else along those lines. But for me, there is no point in drinking beer, or any other alcoholic beverage for that matter. Maybe one day I will drink wine, but I don't think I will ever drink beer. It smells bad and tastes even worse. For now I think I will stick to my basics: water, coffee, tea, juice, and pepsi.

Alright kids... let a bigger kid who's of legal age give it to ya straight. Ya see... I was once like you and completely and utterly happily straight edged.

My team of heroes played D&D on weekends and got high of massive amounts of pixie stix and Mountain Dew. (Actually we still do!)

Then college came and we found a new kind of fun.

Normally, you don't start drinking beer cuz you like the taste. You drink it cuz well..... it losens you up. And sometimes on special occasions you actually do wanna get drunk. It allows you just not to hold back and sometimes that's a good thing.

For example.. two of my long standing friends here in Madison are leaving.... forever to persue lives elsewhere in America.

There's an occasion I don't wanna hold back how much I miss them or how much I enjoy laughing with them and getting tanked does that.

Of course there's the flipside... you end up doing this like everyday, or to the point where "not holding back" means hurting others, or you absolutely need it in order to have a good time... then you have a problem.

That's not what I'm talking about.

Anyway, after a while you start getting a taste for it. It's kinda like..... eating sushi. Initially you eat it and none of it really tastes any good. But you have it enough and enough different kinds you get a taste for it! It starts tasting good on its own and not compared to any other kinds of food you've had. It's good sushi. And after you've had enough different kinds you can infact tell the good from the bad.

But to start drinking good beer, you gotta have the money, and usually at 18.... you don't have money, thus can only drink crappy beer for the sole purpose of loosening up.

Once you have money, you and your now old friends(I'm old! :( ) go too wood and brass bars for their special micro-brewed stuff where the taste is strong, heavy, yet... smooth. There's some bitterness there, but that you're able to either not notice it or easily take it is a mark that you're no Sally. Often, there's a comfort to the heavy controlled bitter taste that becomes verying soothing and a welcome sensation on the taste bud.

Kinda like people who like spicey foods and take pride that they can handle the spicey-ness.

Beer's best often cuz it comes straight out of a nice bottle and won't leave ya passed out on the floor after two drinks like tastier mixed drinks can at the hands of a sadistic bartender. In a social situation you can stand like a man and have a cold one instead of having a mixed drink out of a prissy lil' glass with a tiny straw.

So... that's about what's best about a brew. Not to mention all the laughs, times, and comaraderie that often accompany it.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear most of you don't drink. It's a very good idea to stay that way as long as possible. When you're a budding young adventurer it's best to start off without the alcohol. It's just not necessary....

EDIT:

Two things to add - "Enjoy beer. Learn your limit, treat it with respect and it can bring a great deal of fun. Don't abuse it or you'll end up abusing yourself." SJJ.... I don't think it's ever been said batter.

And Nightflower, I think you just might be the coolest frelling person on this board..... ever! :D

No wonder non-alcoholic beer sells so bad. JC has lightly loosened my stance on drinking but still I'd rather not drink to loosen myself up. I can usually do that when everyone else does that.

I mean come on, if the girl your talking to is loose (due to the brew) your not going to be all stiff because she's not going remember anything stupid you do anyway and you can just flow.

Bottomline people drink beer to get messed up or take advantage of women

I hate to admit itbut Slip's right again. I swear i remember after 8th grade graduationw hen everyone started throwing parties and the guys were already planning to bring alcohol to the party to target certain girls and take advantage of them. As a member of the BPL (Broke Pimp Leauge) ** I was a part of this planning but luckily I never brought any of the stuff and said my mom caught me.

**Stupid Club my friends and I started. We wore dollar store rings and had a symbol and acted stupid at parties.

JohnCrichton
08-28-2002, 12:15 PM
Slip's not right. Only jerks and a-holes do that...

You're always you... even when you're drunk. You know what's up and what's down and most importantly you have control of how much you drink.

As SJJ said, the best thing to do is learn your limits and then watch yourself. After that you can have a really good time.

A friend of mine met his wife while schnookered and I doubt he'd have had the guts if he wasn't. Now they're living happily ever after.

Still...... wait 'til college. You'll be a better man or woman for it. Somethings you just have to wait for.

An intelligent seven year old might wonder why someone would wanna play Eternal Darkness or Silent Hill? What's appealing about these horrid monsters with flesh dripping off their skins or being scared out of your frelling gore so that you might have nightmares later!?!?!?!

You could tell them with knowledge that so long as you don't over do how much you have fun with scary video games or movies that in a couple years they'll find out why it's so enjoyable.

So wait.... and if you're confident on your own, silly on your own, can have a good time on your own, then do that.... then when you're of age pop open a cold one and have fun. Cuz then you'll already know that you don't need it and won't rely on it, thus.. should have more control over yourself when you do it and less chance of making a habit out of it.

Oh, and Chris memory loss only happens in the most extreme situation. 98% of the time I'd say you keep your memory.... and sometimes that's the embarassing smack in the head you need to make sure you watch yourself the next time out. Otherwise your friends are usually there to remind you what you did with furrowed brows.

Broke Pimp League! LOL! That's awesome! Wish my friends and I had come up with such a cool name for ourselves. :D

I used to hate beer too. I now prefer it. But as everyone else seems to say, I prefer the German beers or local microbrews to anything mass produced like Miller.

I've my fair share of drunken experiences and have done things I regreted and some things I don't. It's a depressant though, and it totally loosens your inhibitions which is is why it's so popular really.
And like everything else, when enjoyed in moderation and on occasion can be good. Not everyone will enjoy it, I have a friend who jokes "I'm 3/4 German and can't stand the taste of beer!".

JohnCrichton
08-28-2002, 07:52 PM
Feels good, can bring about good times, allow you to ask that one cute girl to dance that you otherwise wouldn't.

Still... using the quote I will use to my dying day from SJJ, "Beer, enjoy it, respect it, but if you abuse it, you only abuse yourself...."

After a while you get a taste for it and can appriciate it. Which is how it is for I guess all things. For the life of me, all champagne and wine tastes the same to me..... bad.

Well, I guess I'm in the tiny minority that actually likes domestic beer. It tastes good, loosens you up, and keeps your already emaciated wallet from comepletely caving in. :D

I'll admit, beer is an acquired taste, but even when I was a little kid, I used to beg my parents to give me a taste of their beer. Wow...how appropriet...

I guess it's been one of "those" weeks for my brother, and Mom is out of town, so my brother got a 6 pack of apple flavored beer(well, it has a picture of an apple on it...it's just my guess). Where I live, It's illegal to buy alcohol till you're 21, but it's legal to drink under parental supervision if you're 18(goofy law, huh?). I'm 18. Hmm...I'm sure Dad is going to be pissed off when he gets home and see's it(he doesn't drink it, and doesn't like the idea of my brother drinking it). And my biggest concern is if my brother will try to get me to drink it. Hmm....I do like apples! :D

Like I said.... wait as long as you can. Preferably 'til college age of 19-20.

Then indulge and see your limits.

Diving in, just to be diving in.... I don't that there's much to learn or can be learned.

Cider Jack type stuff does taste good tho.... but it's not really beer.
