Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

The Intro
Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!

Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!

The Low Down:
The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm Eastern the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!

You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.

The Rules:
We ask that all users encourage each other to abide by the rules.

Rule #1
Respect others on the boards. It's one thing to disagree with the opinions of others and discuss it. It's another to insult them by verbally bashing the choices of the poll. Do not insult any choices on the poll.

Rule #2
If rule 1 cannot be adhered to, you will be warned. If the situation happens again, banning will occur. There is no strike three.

Rule #3
The moderators reserve the right to suspend the poll for a week (or more) if they deem that the situation warrants.

Rule #4
Campaigning is allowed and encouraged, but in consideration of everyone with slower connections, all images should be thumbnailed. If an image program is not available to assist in that, then they must be linked to. Any post with images larger than 300 pixels in width, will have to be deleted.

Requests:
Keep on sending requests in!!! If there's a character you'd like to see back on the poll again, send requests for that, too. colin@toonzone.net (http://forums.toonzone.net/member.php?s=&action=mailform&userid=8). Do NOT send them via Private Message. Any requests sent in via Private Message are not considered for the polls.

The Gallery:
Make sure to take a look at the Gallery (http://www.toonzone.net/comics/john-delaney/), which collects all the images done for this poll.

Got all of that? Great! Let the voting begin on "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

But if she wins I've got to wonder if John would draw her in, or out of the suit. *nudge* *nudge* ;) ;) Or maybe both...

Here is who I am deciding between: The Flash, and Phoenix (X-men).

Daria, Samus, Yusuke, Fry and Blender just look ordinary to me (though if Yusuke won, it would almost be a self portrait of me) so that is why they are not one of my choices. I don't know the others on the poll.

So I am left with the decision of "most styles". The Robin pic and the Wolverine one show off why I voted for them. The only different Flash I saw was the fat one in that JL episode and Phoenix as the Jean Grey version and non-Jean Grey version (X-Men TAS).

Help me decide.

Vote Fry and Bender and you'll see the best! Yes! I don't read comic books very often, but I bought that specific one because it was a Terminator parody and John actually drew it himself. Very awesome work.

The two contemporary Flashes are Barry Allan (deceased) and Wally West (formerly Kid Flash), in costume though they look the same to me. There is the Golden Age Flash, from the frties, I don't know his real name. He wears a tin hat with wings on it. Other than that I don't think there is any other "real" Flash. There's the Reverse Flash, who is some kind of future clone of Barry come back to the present. Sort of a Bizzarro for The Flash. And Impulse, the current "Flash in training" but he has never used the word "Flash anywhere in his name. I would like to know about this "fat Flash." :p

The Flash and Pheonix both deserve thier day, but I am pullin for Samus this time, since I requested her. If she wins and John doesn't want to draw "both" I would prefer to see her in costume. That suit is just killer. How many guys didn't know she was a chick untill they beat the game? Be honest now.

Jean Grey started as Marvel Girl. When she became more powerful she took the name Pheonix. Later she turned to evil and was the Dark Pheonix. She regained herself and powered down and no longer uses any alias. The other Pheonix I know of was a member of the British mutant group, Excaliber. As far as I know she was from the future, I believe she may have been a decendant of Jean's. I don't know her real name. Actually, it was Rachel something.

Enough about that, I'm supporting Samus so here's a history lesson from Beyond Infinity (http://members.tripod.com/samus_aran03/id15.htm). WARNING: IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED THESE GAMES AND THINK YOU MIGHT LIKE TO, THE TEXT BELOW CONTAINS SPOILERS. READ IT AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION.

The Biography of Samus Aran

Samus' past is a shady one, and nobody knows for sure where she's from or who her real family is. What I have here is not gospil. Instead it is what I have compiled up from various sources that hint or speak of her past.

Samus was the only child borne to her parents. Her father seems to have been invovled with the Galactic Federation somehow, but what her mother's occupation was remains a mystery. The family lived together in their own complex in a small human space colony. It's unclear what planet this was on, but some sources hint that it was close to the Chozo homeworld.

But while Samus was still very young, anywhere from five to ten years old, disaster struck. It was around the same year that the space pirates had emerged that the space coloney was attacked, the pirates kiling everyone except for one small child...One Samus Aran. On a return trip to their own homeworld, two Chozos took note of the destruction and landed to scope it out. They thought there weren't any survivors until they heard the pittiful cries of a frightened human child. They helped the battered Samus out of the wreckage and decided to take her home, to raise her as their own.

Samus and the Chozos taught each other. The non-warring race had a lot to learn about her fighting instincts; in turn, she had a lot of wisdom to gain from their peaceful ways. Nevertheless, they somehow educated her in the art of war, and when she became of age, equipped her with a suit of armor enhansed by their superior technology, designed to be tough like Chozo skin. Not long after that, a mysterious new bounty hunter appeared at the Federation Headquarters, and easily proved "his" worth. Still, "he" insisted that "he" only work alone, otherwise the Federation would not have "his" services.

This all sets the stage for the Metroid series to begin, where Samus Aran embarks on the biggest adventures of her tragic life.

Metroid

Released way back in the summer days of 1986, Nintendo's newest platform/adventure game from Japan opened up a whole new world of videogaming for the home console. The game, which hadn't quite taken off with the Japanese, soon became a sort of occult here in America.

Massive levels, secret passages, and the feel of not knowing what awaited you behind that closed blue door added to the game's appeal. The game itself was the story of a lone bounty hunter sent to eradicate the threat of space pirates on the planet Zebes, but, as any veteran of this series should know, things are not what they seem. One could imagine the surprise players got after beating the game when -- lo and behold! -- the bounty hunter unmasked themself, revealing that the character so many had thought a man to be a woman instead! This was undoubtedly a giant shocker for gamers of that time, when nearly all video game heros were men.

With easy controlls, smooth movement, perfect sound-effects and mood-setting music, Metroid was an all-around awesome game. Why the series never took off in Japan is beyond me.

Metroid II: Return of Samus

In 1991, big heros such as Link and Mario all had new sequels with which to challenge their fans, but one classic hero was missing in action: the galatic bounty hunter, Samus Aran. Five Samus-less years had left Metroid fans terribly restless, but Nintendo came out and surprised them all when they opened a copy of Nintendo Power magazine to find an ad reading, "Metroid: The Universe has Expanded". Later that year Metroid II was released for the Gameboy console, ending the dry spell.

Samus' new adventure was full of even more surprises than the last, putting her on the homeworld of the Metroids -- SR388 -- not long after her last adventure. Her mission was to kill off the rest of the Metroids so that the space pirates might never again clone them for evil, but little did she know that the pirates were already a step ahead of her. They had exposed the Metroids to beta rays, creating entirely new breeds and mutations. In addition to improved graphics, bigger levels, and Samus' new look, there was an array of new upgrades and weapons for her power suit, such as the Spider Ball. The big evil this time was the Queen Metroid, who left behind a sole hatchling after her death which mistook Samus for it's mother. You might say the hardened bounty hunter softened up a little to it...

Super Metroid

Although Metroid II: Return of Samus had been released in 1991, fans were already wanting a third installment of the Metroid series before the year was up. The reason? Nintendo's new 16-bit masterpiece, the SNES, had just been released in Japan, and already their regular hits were scheduled to get new games. The idea of Metroid in full blazing 16-bit color was exciting, and naturally Metroid fans wanted to see what Nintendo could pull off in putting their favorite game on there. After a long, 3-year wait, we finally found out.

The wait was more than worth it. Nintendo did not let us down. In this new Metroid chapter, we found Samus returning to Zebes almost right after her return from SR-388. Ridley had stolen the hatchling from the Ceres Space Coloney, and she was determined to get it back. Many old and all-too-unforgetable faces resurfaced as she tackled Mother Brain's forces once more, yet somehow it was a very diverse title. Best of all, she still had most of her old moves from the previous two games, in addition to a bundle of awesome new ones, such as the Grapling Beam and Speed Booster. Maps and the ability to aim were a great touch, and the game was finished off nicely with the mood-setting music we've come to expect in the Metroid titles.

The best Metroid game to date. (IMHO) But what lies ahead for us in the ongoing story of Samus Aran? Bitter, bitter dissapointment ensued as we never saw a Metroid for the ground-breaking Nintendo 64 system, but they just might make up for it -- after all, a new game for the Gamecube looks pretty promising...

Super Smash Brothers

After months, and possibly years, of dealing with Metroid fans' demands for a new game with Samus in it for the N64, the executives at Nintendo
"granted" our wishes. We got a game with Samus in it, alright, but she wasn't the star of the game. Still, Super Smash Brothers is a total classic, and a great game which is hard to get tired of (just like Metroid).

Samus is, by far, my favorite fighter in this game, not only because I'm a Metroid fan, but because of the fact that she is highly versitile. Unlike other characters, which only have one or two things going for them, Samus is very well-rounded in all aspects. Her speed's just right, so she's not as easy to lose controll of as with faster characters, such as Fox or Falcon. Her air qualities are surpurb! It's not easy to knock her off the stage, just because she can stay (and attack) in the air for a long period of time. Most of all, her attacks are probably the most varied out of everyone's, with Link being a close second. Ranging from her charge shot and trusty bombs to an airborne drill kick and heafty napalm blast, she deals out damage quick and hard.

It took me several seconds, but then it hit me in the head:

A vote for Daria is a vote for someone who cares about the "real" unedited series that aired on MTV from 1997 to 2001.

A vote for Daria is a vote for American Animation, who can still make a good show in this era of anime. (even though I still love anime)

A vote for Daria is a vote for the cynic in many of us who tire of the shallow, superficial world that can surround us.

And finally: a vote for Daria is just good.

Cynics unite! Vote Daria Morgendorfer!

BTW: a vote for Wolfwood works as well, but only because the stuff Kuroneko in my room told me so.

If this site would let me vote (for some reason, it won't), I'd totally vote for the Flash. As much as I love the Final Fantasy games and Futurama and whatnot, I'm a big Flash fan too. I wish someone would include Impulse in one of these polls. I absolutely adore him and Max Mercury. Any of the Flashes are cool, but I'm more partial to Barry and Wally than Jay. ^^

Aside from that, Barry's boots had wings at the top and Wally's do not. Barry had blue eyes, Wally had green. Not much more difference beyond that.

The Golden Age Flash is Jay Garrick, the original guy from the 1940's who inspired Barry Allen to become a superhero with his super-speed. Jay Garrick is still active over the pages of JSA, and his connection with the Speed Force keeps him young.

The "Bizarro" Flash is called the "Reverse Flash" but he's an all-out villain. (Bizarro Superman, on the other hand, is more of a misunderstood pest who never understands the consequences of his actions.) The Reverse Flash is a scientist from the future, Eobard Thawne, who was probably the most threatening enemy Barry ever faced. He [seemingly] killed Barry's wife, Iris and when Barry finally moved on and found a new love, Thawne was about to kill his new love... I think her name was Fiona. But Flash stopped him and, in the process, killed Thawne.

That's the grossly over-simplified Flash lesson for today :)

So yeah, the only four main "Flashes" have been Jay, Barry, Wally and John Fox from the future. Other notable speedsters include Johnny Quick and his daughter Jesse, Max Mercury, Impulse, and dozens of future heroes all to be part of the Flash legacy.

The Flash on the Justice League show is Wally West and yes he's very humorous in his book as well, although his villians definately aren't.
Cheers

Hmm, is Wally the current Flash in the comics??

Jor-El

Yes, Barry was a blond with a crew cut and Wally had red hair. The only reason I neglected to mention this is because with their Flash cowls on, we can't see their hair. :)

And yes, Wally is currently the Flash in the comics. He took over for Barry after Barry gave his life in Crisis on the Infinite Earths. Luckily for Barry, his sacrifice is still important and touching as he was never resurrected. That's what makes Barry such a great hero.

Hmm, I like the Justice League TV version of Flash and since you're saying he's like this in the comics too, I'll give my vote to Flash as well.

You've got to read the Flash monthly series JTurner954, it's one of the best reads you'll find, and you can see Wally face challenges that are worthy of his skills and allow him to make full use of his powers.

Hmmm, seems, unsurprisingly, that The Flash is still blazing ahead in first, with Samus in 2nd, and Trigun's Wolfwood in 3rd. Personally, I like JL's The Flash myself. I think he's pretty hilarious. :D If he does win, I'd like to see the JL version done by Mr. D.

However, I'm still hoping for Minerva! There's still one more day to go!

PLEASE VOTE FOR MINERVA MINK!!!!!!

JL Flash is very amusing and is probably one of the few parts about the show I truly enjoy (even if I find his powers an insult to the real character) but if you would give the comic a chance, I think you would find the comic incarnation of Wally West even more rich and enjoyable. He's still got a good wit, but he's always competent, responsible, heroic, and noble. The Flash on JL is hardly any of that.

Having said all that, it's sad to say that Flash is my favorite character on that often-poorly-written series.

I hear what you're saying about The Flash on the JL show compared to the Flash of the comics but the show is supposed to be showing Wally a bit earlier in his career when he was making mistakes and was a bit more impulsive. Plus, as with Superman they powered down the Flash so that he works in a 1/2 hour team show more.

Jor-El

John, I understand that they felt the need to power down everyone, but you can read the JLA title and the characters aren't powered down to fit in with the team. They are still powerful. The powering down of the heroes was laziness on the part of the writers who didn't want to be bothered thinking of threats large enough to require a full Justice League.

Aren't superheroes constantly powered up and down anyhow? Thats how they keep interest in a stereotype like Superman.

Anyhow Flash gets my first Delaney Poll vote.

Hey Barry
I don't think it's a matter of laziness so much as a matter of time constraint. In the JLA comic you can take a 4-6 issue story arc to explain and properly convey the epic nature of the threats the League has to face. In the series you have 2 blocks of 22 minutes to try and do the same thing. At the power level the Flash and Superman are at in the comics almost every episode would end with Superman or the Flash or (Kyle Rayner)Green Lantern swooping in to save the day. The powering down gives the writers of the TV show more of a chance for the team to be reliant on one another while at the same time making the threats even greater and taking less time to do it in.

if thats what you honestly believe then i hope you'll concede that batman is a stereotype too who they are constantly having to "power up"

at least you didnt call superman a tool in this thread ;P

I don't concede anything in also calling Batman a stereotype. However he's not an all-powerfull superhero with very little (if not only one) weakness and doesn't need to be powered up or down. Batman is cliche in a supercop sort of way. It all boils down to writing anyhow. I happen to think a creative story can pull Batman out of the stereotype quicker than Superman.

The only reason I didn't call Superman a tool is from fear of Mod editing as before. ;)

To get back to the poll, I had a hard time choosing Flash over Phoenix because I'm really enjoying New X-Men but someone mentioned that there were fewer people voting this week and I feared a last minute flood by the anime contingent. I wanted my first vote to count. Maybe next week I'll vote with my heart.

Well, it looks like are winner for this week is: The Flash! He blazed away the competition including Samus and Wolfwood. Too bad Minerva didn't even come close. :(

Minerva (writing in her diary): Dear Diary, I was part of a sketch poll for an entire week, hoping to win. Instead, I got beat by some red-colored, mondo-nerdo, super-guy who's too super-fast for me. (sighs) Oh, well. Hopefully, I'll get another chance soon. I'm just glad to see there are a few who still like me. Your faithful servant, (signs name) Minerva Mink.

I don't think one is required to post what they vote for, so you need not worry...

However your support of the DC Domination of the poll is noted, and I'm sure appriciated by many here.
