Here are some ideas from me:
_________________________________________________-
1. Tex Avery's dumb dogs

While at Warner Brothers, Tex Avery experimented with a dumb dog, very similar to "Meathead" of the Screwy Squirrel films at MGM. He was called Willoughby in one film, and remained nameless in others. "'Of Fox And Hounds" pokes fun at John Steinbeck's novel "Of Mice and Men", putting the characteristics of characters George and Lennie into a dog and fox. "The Heckling Hare" was Tex Avery's final film for Warner Brothers, after an argument with Producer Leon Schlesinger over a cut made to the now-lost original ending, and "Screwball Squirrel" introduces us to Screwy Squirrel and his dog nemesis, Meathead.

"Of Fox and Hounds" (1940)
"The Heckling Hare" (1941)
" Screwball Squirrel" (MGM)
___________________________________________________-
2. Pepe Le Pew
Pepe Le Pew is a French lover with irresistible charm, charisma, and attitude, but he has one problem...he's a skunk.
Chuck Jones created Pepe in 1945. In the first film, it is important to note that Pepe is not only oblivious to the fact that the object of his affection is a cat, but a male cat as well. All remaining films had Pepe chase a female feline, later named "Penelope". In 1949, Jones won Warner Bros. an Academy Award with "For Scentimental Reasons". "The Cat's Bah" (1954) has a tribute to actor Charles Boyer's "Pepe Le Moko" character, look at the skunk's next door neighbor's nameplate.

"Odor-Able Kitty" (1945)
"For Scent-Imental Reasons" (1949)
"The Cat's Bah" (1949)
____________________________________________________
3. "The music of Tom and Jerry"
Throughout the careers of America's favorite cat and mouse, a number of films by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera focused on musical action and themes. One, "Yankee Doodle Mouse", set the Tom and Jerry theme to a warlike battle in the basement with the patriotic music of Irving Berlin, orchestrated beautifully by the MGM musical director, Scott Bradley. A few of these won Academy awards, one, "The Cat Concerto", (1946) even beating out a Warner Brothers Bugs Bunny film with an almost identical plot the same year, "Rhapsody Rabbit". Also, in "Solid Serenade", Tom is given a voice, but only to sing "Is You Is, or Is You Ain't My Baby".

"The Yankee Doodle Mouse"
"The Cat Concerto"
"Solid Serenade"

4. Friz Freleng and Speedy Gonzales: *NOTE: I have chosen the most "politically correct" films as possible,CN has shown two of these before.:

Although Warner Brothers' Speedy Gonzales films are considered a bit controversial for today's viewers, it is important to note the genius of several of these shorts. Although director Robert McKimson created him in 1953 and directed many of his subsequent films, the fastest mouse in all Mexico is best remembered through the cartoons of Friz Freleng. In fact, "Speedy Gonzales" (1955) won an Academy Award, "The Pied Piper of Guadelupe" (1961) was nominated. When Warner bros. cartoons was closed and reopened in 1964 under the DePatie/Freleng company, the first film of this new batch was a Speedy film by Friz Freleng, "Pancho's Hideaway".

"Speedy Gonzales"(1955)
"The Pied Piper of Guadelupe" (1961)
"Pancho's Hideaway" (1964)

*"Max Fleischer's 3-D backgrounds":

In 1933, cartoon producer Max Fleischer created an appartus that allowed cartoons to have actual 3-D backgrounds. Popeye the Sailor was featured in several cartoons, one of which is the 1934 cartoon, "A Dream Walking".

"A Dream Walking B&W version"

You may have noticed that "A Dream Walking" was in black and white, but in 1937, Paramount Pictures encouraged Fleischer to produce a two reel color Popeye cartoon, again featuring the 3-D backgrounds.

More ideas:

1."The Devil Made Me Do It":
In 1954, Robert McKimson wanted to create a character to pit against Bugs Bunny that would be formidable not for brains, but for bestiality. The result was the film "Devil May Hare".McKimson did some research and came up with a creature few people had heard of, a Tasmanian Devil. The true creature is found in Tasmania, an island off of Australia. The Tasmanian Devil, or "Taz", has since become one of the studio's most popular characters. Producer Edward Selzer hated the character and had Taz retired, but Jack Warner ordered the character to be resuscitated. Even though he only appeared in 5 classic shorts, with only two costars, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, Taz is featured in merchandise and comic books to this very day. He even had his own Saturday morning television show, "Taz Mania", in the early 1990's.

"Devil May Hare" (1954)
"Bedevilled Rabbit" (1957)
"Ducking the Devil" (1957)
____________________________________________________
2. "What a night for a fight, or "Do You Wanna Take This Outside?!":

In many classic cartoons, characters would occasionally tangle with each other aggressively, and the medium of animation allowed a fight to be much more violent than in real life. For example, cartoons would often employ such weapons as the frying pan or the anvil, and whatever else is handy. Some cartoons took on the theme of boxing or wrestling, while others just had some good old fashioned brawling. Here's a selection of classic cartoon clobbering:

"Porky and Daffy" (WB)
"Shoein' Hosses" (Popeye, Fleischer)
"The Truce Hurts" (MGM, Tom and Jerry)
___________________________________________________
3. "Snow kiddin':"

Winter-themed cartoons:
Porky Pig's early costar Beans the cat takes on a bully in a ski race in "Alpine Antics", Popeye, Olive Oyl and Bluto have a tough time on the slopes in "I Ski Love Ski You Ski", and Jerry Mouse freezes the kitchen in "Mice Follies".

"Alpine Antics"(WB)
"I Ski Love Ski You Ski" (Popeye)
"Mice Follies" (MGM)
_______________________________________________
4. "Story Toons":

Cartoons adapted from storybooks.
Bob Clampett's "Horton Hatches the Egg" (1942) was the only Warner Brothers cartoon to be adapted from a Dr. Seuss tale. "The Bear That wasn't" was Chuck Jones' MGM cartoon, adapted from a book written by former Warner Bros. director Frank Tashlin, and Chuck Jones' "The Dot and the Line" won MGM an Academy Award.

"Horton Hatches the Egg" (WB)
"The Bear that Wasn't" (MGM)
"The Dot and the Line" (MGM)

5. "Back to the Old Drawing Board":

"Designs on Jerry" (MGM)
"Duck Amuck" (WB)
"Rabbit Rampage" (WB)

Here's a quick thought:

I Wanna Be Superman (alt. title (for you "Space Jam" fans out there;) : I Believe I Can Fly )

"Super Rabbit"

"Stupor Duck"

and perhaps the CN debut of "Superior Duck"?***

***it's really tempting to ask for "Snafuperman" is this slot, but that might be asking for a bit too much. Still, if i rememer correctly, it's pretty tame for a Snafu cartoon.

THE CONGA CRAZE

It's evident from watching the cartoons of the wartime '40s that the conga was a big music/dance craze. I've always wanted to see those cartoons together.

1) KICKIN' THE CONGA ROUND - Popeye(in B&W)

2) HOLLYWOOD STEPS OUT

3)SLICK HARE(admittedly, this may be too close to the Hollywood theme, but both have major conga scenes)

Also, to whatever degree possible, clips from all the other conga moments in cartoons(that CN can show) are a must, and would give a real feel for the music. Any of the others could replace the list above(if it comes too close to the Hollywood theme).

Thanks much for this opportunity.

I just skimmed through all the other ideas, and it looks like most everything good is taken. Here's all I can think of for now:

Government films:
A Hitch In Time
90 Day Wandering
Drafty, Isn't It

Government films part two:
So Much For So Little
Point Rationing Of Foods (may be public domain)
if there's time, I wouldn't mind them showing "Hell Bent For Election" It has one Japanese steriotype in it, though, but not a major one. It also isn't technically a government funded film, but oh well...

Oscar Winners:
Tweety Pie
Speedy Gonzales
Knighty Night Bugs

The Bugs Bunny Show:
wouldn't it be neat if they could cobble todether a copy of "The Bugs Bunny Show" and put it TV?

Modern Looney Tunes:
Marvin the Martian in the 3rd Demention
Pullet Suprise
Father of the Bird

Modern Looney Tunes part two:
Chariots of Fur
Another Froggy Evening
Superior Duck

The Wide World Of CinemaScope! (this really could be a series on it's own, though):
Mucho Mouse
Good Will To Men (it's premier on CN!)
One Droopy Knight

That's all I can think of for now, I'll come back later.

Commercial Value:
A half hour of commercials featuring Looney Tunes and Hanna Barbera cammercials from the 50s to the 90s. Mostly tame stuff, but they could maybe try to squeeze in a Flinstone cigarette commercial

Blue Ribbon Bloopers:
first, about six minutes educating everyone what blue ribbon reissues were, showing examples of original titles, like those found at Jerry Beck's site.
Then show the original copy of "A Wild Hare" mentioning how the title was changed for the reissue.
then, either show another restored title, like Scaredy Cat, or find a restored copy of "Book Revue" (they have the sound track for it, so they must have the original someplace....)

CARTOONS ALTERED FOR REISSUE AND TELEVISION

A lot of theatrical cartoons have been altered for television and reissue. In the late 40's, Warner Brothers reissued many color cartoons as Blue Ribbon reissues, and in 1956, sold the pre-1948 cartoons to Associated Artists Productions. Now, we present the AAP Blue Ribbon version of Detouring America.

Detouring America

AAP also bought the Popeye cartoons from Paramount Pictures. Paramount insisted the Paramount logo be removed from the cartoons, so therefore the aap version didn't have the Paramount opening. Here's Popeye in the aap version of Bride and Gloom.

Bride and Gloom.

Toonheads Trivia In 1956, what former Warner Bros animator was employed by AAP to help catalog their library of Warner Bros. cartoons?

Toonheads Answer: In 1956, Bob Clampett was hired by AAP to catalog the Warner Bros. library. Soon afterward, AAP was bought out by United Artists. UA then asked Bob to work on some Beany and Cecil cartoons for television.

Thanks to recent discoveries, the AAP library of cartoons, now owned by AOL-Time Warner, is being restored. The Paramount logo is now restored to most of the Popeye color cartoons, and now the original Paramount openings are being restored to the B&W cartoons as well. Here's 1943's Cartoons Ain't Human, with it's original Paramount opening, which hasn't been seen in years.

Cartoons Ain't Human

In 1955, Warner Brothers sold the black and white Looney Tunes to Guild Films. Guild Films was absorbed by Seven Arts, which merged with Warner Bros. Warner Bros had the cartoons redrawn in color. Here's the redrawn version of Daffy's Southern Exposure.

Daffy's Southern Exposure

FROM GAK: To all Termite Terrace posters.

Hi guys! Thanks for your enthusiasm and your suggestions. I am currently working on thirteen new ToonHeads episodes and can tell you that a few of your ideas are already "In the Works."

I think you are REALLY going to like the new episodes. They are MUCH more in-depth. In fact, two or three shows will be one hour long, because there was just no way of doing justice to the topic in 30 minutes.

I will check-in to this thread from time to time and keep you all updated as to the progress of these thirteen new shows.

Take care!

That's wondeful news! For a while I thought Toonheads was dead, aside from occasional one hour specials. Now I can't wait for the new episodes, especially if they are more in depth.

That's wonderful. Thank you! I'm glad there are going to be more episodes, I was getting a little tired of "The Night of a thousand Elves" and "Dreams of Bob Clampett". Great documentaries, but when Cartoon Network reruns the same things over and over again, they grow tiresome. Please keep us updated, and thanks again!

Mr. GAK, I would to thank you very much from taking time out of your busy schedule to read our suggestions, and that means a lot to all of us that worked really hard to give your network some possible ideas(for Toonheads) and we thank you for that.

But just one little thing Mr.GAK, there is many of us fans of MGM'S first cartoon star, "FLIP THE FROG" and we would hope that CN will pick up this excellent series, to see on Toonheads and LNB&W, and other related theatrical programs on the network, and it would mean a lot to us, if you can bring "FLIP THE FROG" to CARTOON NETWORK :)

Thank You once again, and keep us updated Mr. Gak
Best Wishes!

About the "widescreening" of the WB 1954-1969 cartoons...I read somewhere that they were made to be matted to 1.85:1 in theaters because of CinemaScope. That would be really keen if some clips of the cartoons were shown "matted" to show how they looked in theaters.

I would really love it (as many other people where probably would) if Toonheads only showed uncut cartoons. It would be even better if all Popeye's were shown B&W. The colorized versions really look bad on satellite TV and B&W looks crisper.
I'd love to see a 2-hour Toonheads on the Censored 11, but I know you got standards and practices to not air that stuff... :(

THE DARK SIDE

cartoons with a darker feel to them. All Tex's "Sad ending, isn't it?" gags could be used in the clips(maybe at the end?)

1) BLUE CAT BLUES - Tom & Jerry

2)HAPPY BIRTHDAZE - Popeye (uncut, to the "bitter end"!)

3) Not sure of a 3rd one, but 3 come to mind as maybes:
WHO KILLED WHO, or FEED THE KITTY(felt dark when I watched it as a kid), or the Tweety & Sylvester(I can't think of the title right now) with the Alfred Hitchcock parody.

Certainly Chuck or Friz had a dark side in some of their cartoons

YOU AIN'T HEARD NOTHING YET: TOM TALKS!
The Zoot Cat *The Mouse That Comes To Dinner * Quiet Please
Tom also spoke in "The Millionaire Cat", which presented a moral dilemma for him: be rich and give up what fulfills him (pursuing that mouse), or be poor yet happy.

JACK BENNY IN CARTOONLAND:
Malibu Beach Party * The House That Jack Built * Goofy Groceries
This one preferably uncut!
Benny is referenced also in "A Bacall to Arms", and the voice of Casper Caveman in "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur" is definitely Benny-ish.

One could also do the same with W.C. Fields ("My Little Chickadee", "The Little Blabbermouse", and the one in which he goes ice-skating and bickers with a Charlie McCarthylike character in the audience. Call it "Strawberry Fields Forever". :p
Or shorts with Negro caricatures, like "Porky's Ant" or anything with Rochester...or shorts depicting Hitler like "Daffy the Commando", "Russian Rhapsody", and "Herr Meets Hare"...or if they ever get the rights to Lantz material again, "Bugs Hardaway's Woody", showing how the woodpecker looked in the beginning, with a pudgy red belly and banded legs--"Pantry Panic" and the short where Woody aspires to be a bomber pilot.

POPEYE'S GOOD CHEATERS

Three of the Popeye series' cheater reels(with clips from other cartoons) - conveniently for Toonheads' format! - were of sufficient quality to be worthwhile, unlike most of that form of cartoon.

THE FIRST ONE(what's name I can't think of right now)
The use of live action in this one makes it fairly unique(Betty Boop one noted), with an interesting story to it. -shown in original b&w.

I'M IN THE ARMY NOW(I belive it's called) - This one is superior because of the fact that the soundtrack to the clips is new, and it's from the peak of Mercer's brilliant mumblings, whereas the clips are mostly from Billy Costello's time there. -shown in original b&w.

FIRST COLOR ONE(title?) - This being before Olive's character design changed, it's a good one to see. The clips are from the color 2-reelers, and, BEST of ALL... THESE clips use the ORIGINAL soundtracks, with Mercer at his peak again. The out-of-sinch scene from Ali Baba(Abul Hassen(sp?)) is IN-sinch (not the band, don't worry ;) ), the only chance we get to see it that way!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Inkspot may have a point. This is an awful lot of pages for GAK to sift through.
But it's also enough ideas(the usable ones) to keep TH alive and new for years!
Hope this thread works. So far, so good!

The first one must be The Adventures of Popeye

The last is Popeye Makes A Movie, that has Abul Hassan. But Popeye's Premiere (with clips from Aladdin and his Wonderful Lamp) was a year earlier and in color. So that was really the first color one, but I think Popeye Makes A Movie would be better. :)

Mibbitmaker

The 3rd cartoon, made while the war was still on(c. 1944), thus Olive's old hair, is the one where Popeye's in a boxing match and loses. Olive wants to break up with him(so what else is new? ), and he shows scenes from pictures in an album from the two 2-reelers excerpted: Ali Baba and Sinbad the Sailor. She still leaves him, but he's only dreaming it.

Popeye Makes a Movie and Popeye's Premier are both one-cartoon cartoons that reduce a single 2-reeler, with new soundtracks over the clips. Both resurect Popeye's old outfit (rather cynically, imho). They're ways to reduce the 2-reelers to a single-length cartoon.

:) Hey, GAK's gotta get it right! :)
