Only a couple of hours until part one airs over here in the UK. Looking forward to this one. Can't wait to see Etrigan again.

This episode was a little boring in places. Hopefully Pt II tomorrow will be more interesting. Etrigan appears to be smaller than in The Demon Within. I think when Morgaine Le Fay is unmasked, she'll be quite frightful looking, even worse than the true face of Lord Hades, which will be quite cool.

Just finished watching part one. It was pretty good. It really is just a Batman and Martian Manhunter story though, which isn't a bad thing as the episode looks to give J'onn's character a little more development. Another thing after having viewed 'The Demon Within' this morning before watching this 'Shadows' the Etrigan character seems very different to me, a lot more vicious I think, I can't quite place my finger on it. Although I may just feel this way because we never really got a good glimpse of what Etrigan was like under the control of Jason Blood before now. The plot seems to be moving along very well and I've definitely been drawn right into it. Fans of B:TAS I feel will really enjoy this episode, I really has that feel of Batman: The Animated Series. I'm really looking forward to part two, tomorrow can't come quick enough.

I agree with Divv and Welsh Dragon that Etrigan has definitely changed slightly in appearance and attitude. I also thought that the voices of Jason Blood and Etrigan were slightly different from "The Demon Within" is Billy Zane still doing the voices?
Overall I thought the episode was very good and had a Batman feel to it throughout. Also I thought the animation seemed smooth and fluid like it should be. Looking forward to part 2.

I agree. I was really looking forward to getting something to gloat about :) , since the US guys won't see this episode for quite some time, but it was very disappointing.

In general I think these mystical, magical episodes tend to be quite weak. I didn't like the Etrigan episode on TNBA either, and since we already had a pretty similar episode in Paradise Lost, A Knight of Shadows really had to be much better than it was. In fact, nothing really exciting happened at all. Even the "cliffhanger" was a bit lame.

Roll on Metamorphosis next weekend, and hopefully The Savage Time the weekend after that.

Sheesh, I have to wait until next month over here in the US.

Little has been made known of the guest stars in "A Knight of Shadows". I can reveal, from having seen the first part today, that these are the guest stars:

Pam Grier - My'ria'h

Soren Fulton - Mordred

W. Morgan Sheppard - Merlin

Dave Thomas - Harv Hickman

Michael Gough - Professor Moss

Jim Meskimen - Knight

Cam Clarke - Paramedic

What?! I though Billy Zane was Etrigan

Not according to the credits. It's not really a big surprise to me that a name actor like Billy Zane couldn't be called upon for whatever reasons he has, but I don't think it makes too much of a difference because Zane didn't really nail the character the way someone like Ron Perlman nailed Clayface or Bob Costanza nailed Detective Bullock.

To be honest, I personally didn't like the original Demon appearance at all. Here's hoping this one will be better. :)

Nice to see Michael Gough doing something in the animated world, too. (Gooooo Alfred!)

I believe it's the other Michael Gough, not the one from the Batman movies. This is the guy who was Raphael on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles when Rob Paulsen vacated the role.

Are there any other Leaguers in it besides Batman and J'onn?

Wonder Woman and the Flash are the other JL members in "A Knight of Shadows".

The second part of "A Knight of Shadows" was better than the first part. Overall I'd give this two-parter 3 stars out of 5. Should Morgaine Le Fay and Mordred return as they promised it'll be interesting to see. Not great, but not terrible either. And was that Harley Quinn I saw in the background? ;)

Yes, Part 2 of A Knight of Shadows was definitely better than part 1, but it still lacked something to get really excited about.

I hoped for a second that J'onn J'onzz was serious about quitting the league at the end, as he is by far the lamest and most boring character on the team, but sadly this wasn't the case. Would someone please prescribe that guy some martian prozac?

so Morgaine Le Fay never was unmasked ??? It was kind of dissappointing the way it ended so suddenly and I thought there was a real opportunity to have Batman put into dream mode and imagine his parents were still alive but it never happened.

Yeah, I noticed Harley Quinn in the background too at the Halloween party. In fact all the stuff at the magazine mogul's house was probably the best stuff in this 2 parter for sheer comic value.

Wonder Woman - "Yeah ... I really want to get a look at your ... stone" Quite funny and quite rude the way she says it

Wonder Woman - "Yeah ... I really want to get a look at your ... stone"

That was probably the line of the show, I thought it was really funny. Flash also had a good line about reading the magazines - "I just read the articles". :)

And correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the guy in the Batman costume at the party doing the Batman?

Part 2 really picked up the pace in this arc, although sadly it failed to excite me as much as part 1 did. Which is kind of strange because Part 2 is a better episode, but the first part seemed to promise a lot more. I was also disappointed that we never got to see Morgan get into Batman's head, I hope we get to see Bruce Wayne some time during this shows run! Loved the Harley Quinn (Half) cameo. Three out of Five. Roll on Metamorphosis!

I think Billy Zane did an excellent job as Jason Blood, anyway how is Michael T. Weiss as him?

I'll miss the Phantom as the Demon. Or not. Who knows, we'll see in a few weeks.

Olivia D'abo as Morgaine. Same woman who voices Star Sapphire, right? She's got the tongue.

September is just 2 wks away. :-)

from what I gather, we'll be taking a trip down memory lane to the days of yore. We'll see first hand the rivalry between Merlin and Morgaine. And hopefully we'll see how Jason and the Demon were merged. Maybe we'll even see that branding iron in Morgaine's lair. :-)

Michael T. Weiss and Olivia d'Abo were also Tarzan and Jane respectively on the recent animated series. How cool is that  !

Howdy,

Michael T. Weiss was also the Nameless One in Planescape: Torment. Amazing computer game, and I expect his Etrigan will have the same kind of gravelly, low voice that he gave TNO.

I thought Billy Zane had the intonation right for the Demon, but got some of the dullest lines in existence. I'm also holding out hope that they'll turn him back into a rhyming demon for the JL episode.

I'll miss Zane, but who knows, I probably won't be able to tell too much of a difference...much like with Daily leaving Superman.

Anyone know the airdate for this episode?

The only person who matters on this list, suckas, is the divine Ms. Pam Grier, baby!

Problem is, Etrigan's rhyming dialogue only works if the writer himself is good at poetry. For example, Alan Moore's Etrigan dialogue in Swamp Thing was good, but Kevin Smith's Etrigan dialogue (from Green Arrow) needed work.

BTW, since they dealt with similar subject matter, I merged this thread with the "Guest stars in 'A Knight of Shadows'" thread.

Finally saw the ep. I liked it, mostly on account of the great tribute Timm managed to pay to Jack Kirby's work. Etrigan's depiction is plain perfect: this is the Demon I like, angry, stubborn, gruesome... plus his design looks quite good (bar the mouth), it's more faithful to Kirby's style, and the animation on his character is rather smooth and fluid. Other highlights: Martian Manhunter finally gets a good story, the Flash is granted some interesting screen time (his interaction with Etrigan is well thought), the JLeaguers work as a team (and not just independent superheroes getting kicked here and there), the animation could be worse...

Now let's not get too frantic about this episode. It's pretty good, but not great. As usual, Batman's characterization remains very weak, his past is never mentionned, and indeed, I would have loved to see him give in to a dream or two. So this really isn't Batman's episode, more like MM and Etrigan's. Other shortcomings: the dialogue remains rather boring, the animation should have been much better at times (see Jason Blood/Etrigan's latest transformation... ugh)

Overall quite good, an enjoyabe show, but season 2 has GOT to display a huge improvement!

I saw the first part of this episode tonight and I thought it was very good. Its nice to see that they actually have the Demon's size right on JL becasue in his Batman appearance he was drawn overly big. Im not sure about his personality thought. Its very different from how he was potrayed in Batman and I've read about him in comics and he never seemed to come across as he did in this ep. I must say that im starting to get slightly disappointed in the way J'onn is being played on the show. In the comics he is one of the most powerful heros on Earth and one of the top telepaths. He also displays great leadership and confidence. I dont see alot of this on the show and he often comes across as weak. The Hugh Heffner like guy in the ep was amusing esspecially with the way he was eyeing Diana you could tell he has his eyes set on her doing a layout for his magazine. :D

I ve been meaning to add my thoughts about the second part of this storyline. I really liked it. I felt it was a well done story. My favorite part was the J'onn vs Etrigan fight. J'onn really pulled out his arsenal and took the Demon down. Phasing ,morphing and finally mentally overwellming Etrigan.

I saw pt1 yesterday. I really enjoyed it. Im not sure how much i like Etrigans new voice. or him being shorter. Its great to see Jonn getting a spotlight and I liked seeing his family. i gave it 4 stars.

Etrigan was very good. I thought Micheal T. Weiss had the voice down. Very menacing and angry. Yeah, J'onn was a little too weak in the ep, he knew he was being fed a lie, he should have fought it better.

Oh YEAH, the Batusi has returned :D !!! I burst out laughing when I saw the transition from modern Batman to the dancing Batman.

I thought for a second Wonder Woman was actually taking Hawkgirl's "Don't knock it till you try it" thing seriously :p , of course until she rants him for his career choice, then punches him later  .

"You stupid, ignorant, pathetic excuses for heroes!" Nice, exactly what a lot of posters have been saying about all of them  .

Part 1 get 2.5, and part 2 gets a 4. I'll be mean and give the whole thing a three.

Later.

***500th post***

I finally saw this ep. I must say that I really liked it. John was great in the end. They finally got to put in some personality into him! I'm glad they did it too. The scene at the end where he's willing to scarifice everything for getting Mars again, was really touching.

Both parts were equally great IMO. They both had something to offer. The animation was very smooth, and worked well. Lotta action (And didn't seem forced either!)

The funniest part in the entire episode is the party scene. Wonderman hitting on that guy. Ha ha. "I'd like to see your stone". And flash's "I just read it for the articles" thing was hilarious too. :p

BTW, did anyone catch the woman that looked like Terry's best friend's mom? It was at the start of the party scene. She's wearing the same dress she was wearing at her wedding in "Spellbound". It was when she got brainwashed by spellbinder.

Overall, "A Knight of Shadows" a good ep. I give it a 4 out of 5 :)

Wow. Just saw it (thanks to the wonders of the internet) and I really liked it. One of my fave eps so far.

It did raise a few questions about the DC version of the Arthur stories though. How much DC continuity featuring Morgan le Fey is there?
