And send a copy of your favorites to the Toonzone Movie Club (tzmovieclub@yahoo.com)! This is what we want! Lots of lists, folks! Do it for me, do it for the club, do it for yourself!
A very strange pic that I didn't put on my list because it's too hard to find: "The Exterminating Angel" ("El Ángel exterminador"), a Mexican movie from 1962 made by Luis Bunuel. It's about a dinner party held by some society types. Afterwards, they find themselves unable to leave the drawing room. No forcefield, no fear or anything keeps them from leaving--they just can't summon the willpower. Even after weeks pass and they begin to fall ill and die from malnutrition and disease. . . .

I saw a movie last night called "Psycho Beach Party" starring that guy who plays Zander from Buffy whose name I can't remember, Lauren Ambrose, Matt Keeslar (mmm...) and some other people. It's a parody of old cheesy horror movies. It's kinda funny, and kinda dumb (but intentionally dumb). It entertained ME, but then again, it doesn't take much to entertain me, so make of that what you will. The acting is very campy, but I like that (again, it's intentional). The performances were pretty good, especially Lauren's.
Anyway, I recommend it. :O)

Actually, since we're going to have two thread running concurrently (one for 'mature' fare and one for fare open to all ages) this is going to be much less of a problem.

It's got a pretty cool soundtrack also.
It follows the book pretty well. It was actually Burroughs's least favorite book. He wrote it right after his wife got raped and he put all of his ugly feelings into it.
The book didn't go into the last chapter though.
They realize that they "violated" his rights by doing the the behavior modification and they switch him back. Then he has a run-in with his Droogs who have become cops. If I remember right they beat him senseless with their night sticks.

Wait, they did show that bit. . .or was that what you meant to say? Chapter 21, which comes after all that, never made it into the movie.
My rec for the evening: "The City of Lost Children." It's French, it has Ron Perlman in it, and it's wacky and fabulous.
Also Steve Martin's "The Man With Two Brains" never fails to amuse. . .

Yeah, that's right. I got mixxed up. I was wondering why I could see his buddy's beating him up so clearly in my head. Cause I saw it in the movie!

The score was freaky and sinister. But it worked well for this movie.

Ahhhhgh! Tetsuo - I remember seeing that drunk off my trolley when I was about 17 - it freaked the hell out of me!!!
Everyone in Hollywood quaked when the Fly was released.... 'Be Afraid, be VERY afraid!'.... they gushed.... that film holds nothing on Tetsuo. This film runs on a very similar level, but there is NO humanity to it at all. I found it very chilling....!
Another 'weird film' that freaks me out is Brazil. Most people love it. I HATE it. In fact, I think - for me - it is my most hated movie of all time. I felt that after watching Brazil, they had just torched a whole two hours out of my feeble existence - a feeling no other film has given me (except Gilliam's short movie on the front of 'The Meaning Of Life').
I HATE it! :(
I need to go and cool now....

I could send you my fave list, Maxie, or you could just go to my DVD list on the DVD boards and pull it from there! I'd just cut and paste it to you anyway!

Man, that's alot of hatred for one movie! Did you watch the sanitized version with the happy ending, or did you get to see the uncut directors version, available on the Brazil Criterion Collection? With an different ending. The extended version is much, much better, and I've seen both.

I'm sure it doesn't matter; if he hated the short film at the beginning of "Meaning of Life," there is no hope for SJJ anyway. ;)
Seriously, I can see someone not liking Gilliam, since he is very much a visual director whose eye runs toward the grotesque and misanthropic. And he can be very good or very bad, even while working in the same "style." I like "Brazil" a lot (the director's cut), but hated, hated, HATED "The Adventures of Baron Munchhausen." And both are much more like each other than they are to "Fisher King" or "Twelve Monkeys."

Definately a weird movie. I liked it. After seeing the director's cut of the movie (which included a scene with Ashley Judd), I don't understand why the cuts were made. The deleted scenes show that the movie is clearly a satire. Like the fight in the diner in the beginning. I loved that scene, cause I like seeing girls kicking the crap out of boys, but in the uncut version, the fight is longer, and it's becomes obviously silly. I mean, Juliet Lewis is really small, so seeing her beating up that guys so brutally is actually humorous. Without the levity of the edited scenes, it's theme seems more grim. Although the edited version did have it's funny moments, like the I Love Lucy spoof.

Anybody here see Blue Velvet and River's Edge? Both of those movies are incredibly good, and River's Edge was based on a true story. Some consider them weird, but I guess it's all based on how you look at the movies. The "weird" factor makes perfect sense in the movies when you get the directors.

I have'nt seen "River's Edge" since Jr. High. Should point out that it is a good film (Even though a young Keanu is in it) and worthy of a recommendation. Its not in the weird sense (No bizzare images like Natural Born Killers,Altered States,Brazil, etc,) but it came out at a time that was considered for it to be "offbeat".
The same goes for "Blue Velvet", this one just seemed to blow everyone away. Either you loved it or hated it..But you never forgot it.
I was just re-viewing my list and it occured to me that most of those films listed there are almost impossible to find at your local video store. Its amazing I was able to get a hold of some of those.

In the UK, to no surprise, we got what I assume you are referring to as the uncut. I assume you are refering to the studios attempt to finish the film with the heading off into the sunset rather than the Gilliam it's-all-in-his-head-cos-he's-now-as-looney-as-you-must-be-for-watching-this-film ending? If there is a worse ending that I haven't seen I don't really need to worry. The is not a CHANCE IN HELL that I will ever watch any part of that movie again!! :D ;)

you know, I had misgivings about Monkeybone before I ever saw it, and that was based on all the bad reviews I read about it. But after I saw it, I thought it was pretty good. I don't see why people hated it so much either, tho I do think it would have benefited more if they didn't make the director make the cuts they forced him to make. I am glad the deleted scenes are on there, but I'd like to see a director's cut still.
If you haven't seen "Plan 9 from Outer Space" you haven't seen anything real weird. It is weird, and one of the worst movies ever made. Bring some coffee to keep to stay awake, oh, Bela Lagose (not spelled right) was in there, he died while it was being made, and they used a double ,but you never got front shots. Made by Ed Wood, and recently, within the last two years, a movie was made about him..can't recall it , someone on the board will, that movie, was cricially acaimed by some of the best movie critics in the country. Ed Wood would be having a great laugh..

Fantastic planet is a freaky one.Ive only seen it on tv when I was very young and still can`t find it for rent! Its an animated, french film with no dialogue that takes place on an alien world where humans are tiny and kept as pets. One scene has two people fighting eachother with big biting worms strapped to their chests.
Anything by Troma films is weird, cheesy and disgusting (but amusingly so) and I can`t forget night of the lepus!

I wouldn't say it's weird - in my book it's rather dull and uninspiring. However, I will agree with you that it's very, very bad.
I suppose you could argue it's visually and aurally distressful and might make you feel like doing weird things (like destroying videos and TV's..... cursing Lady Time for the waste of 90 minutes of your life), but it's surely not, in intention bizarre...
Not like that damn Brazil..... grumble....

Better yet: I'm going to send each of you a PM/email trying to goad you into submitting me a list if you haven't already. ;)
I'm going to go ahead and begin the selection process with the films already submitted. But any lists sent in to me after today will go onto a list for later inclusion. So if you've been putting it off or mulling over a list, you still have time!

I caught 'The Tingler' the other day starring Vincent Twice - Vincent Twice (that was he Sesame Street Personna, I refer to, of course, Vincent Price). While not weird and in fact vaguely ordinary, it does have a wonderful scene where a lady is slowly being frightened to death.
Most of it is bog standard cliches (doors closing, notes on mirrors) but add a blood of thick blood into a black and white film which is actually coloured so it is actually red and things are suddenly quite freaky. The tap then does the same.
Of course, when the man is exposed for hoaxing these elements to scare the lady to death, the ability to change or alter reality so as to add colour into a colourless world is never explained.
A world closely related to Pleasantville methinks? :)

What, nobody's mentioned Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Very strange things happen to very strange people. And the sad part is, apparently Hunter S. Thompsons really DOES act like that.
Brazil's a classic!
