I am doing this early because I'm Tired

On August 20th, the Cartoon Network and Rhino Records will team up to release Dexter's Laboratory: The Hip-Hop Experiment. The album will contain six brand new songs from such hip-hop acts as Coolio, De La Soul, Prince Paul, Phife Diggy (former member of A Tribe Called Quest) will.i.am and YZ.

Dexter's Laboratory is the story of a boy genius creates world changing inventions in his laboratory, despite the interference of his older sister Dee Dee. The show debuted in April of 1996 and his since gone on to earn four Emmy nominations.

"We were thrilled to enlist an incredible roster of talent to go into their labs to create some fun, clever songs that we think Dexter fans of all ages will enjoy," said Mike Engstrom, Product Manager for Warner Special Products. "All the artists involved are huge Dexter's Laboratory fans - and it shows in every track."

To celebrate the release of Dexter's Laboratory: The Hip-Hop Experiment, Cartoon Network will dedicate its entire Cartoon Cartoon Friday lineup on Friday, August 16 from 8 p.m.-12 midnight (ET, PT) to the greatest episodes of Dexter's Laboratory. That night, Cartoon Network will also premiere the first music video for the album, "Back to the Lab." Two additional music videos are also in production.

"Dexter's Laboratory is really a celebration of creative genius, sibling rivalry and the everyday challenges of childhood," added James Porges, vice president of off channel commerce for Cartoon Network. "The artists involved in The Hip-Hop Experiment took the spirit of the show to heart, and the result is a CD that puts a new spin on the themes and characters of the show."

Here is the track listing:

"Dexter's Laboratory Opening Theme"
"Dexter (What's His Name?)" by Coolio
"Love According to Dexter" by Phife Diggy introducing Slick and Rose
"Mandark's Plan" by YZ
"Sibling Rivalries" by De La Soul
"Secrets" by will.i.am
"Back to the Lab" by Prince Paul

Spaz's take......the Dexter top 10.
Mock 5:

Storyboard and Art Direction: Craig McCracken

Director: Genny Tartakovsy and Rob Renzetti

An amazing episode. The Speed Racer Parody is dead on, from the "Dub" to the repeating of diolouge, over and over and over. (Side note: Speed Racer's dub was the inspration for Mojo Jojo's diolouge.) Best gag: "I'm right here dad."

#8? This is #2 in my mind. And it allways will.

Aye Aye Eyes:

Storyboard and Art Direction: Craig McCracken

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

My favroite episode. The entire episode works on an art refrance, a 60's artist named Keen, who drew pictures of big, teary eyed kids. The gag works very well for 6 minnutes. No more, no less. (Another side note. The PPG's where also inspired by the Big-eyed drawings of Keen.)

Muffin King:

Storyboard: Mike Stern

Art Director: Craig McCracken

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

One of the most bizzare episodes. The Muffin King Segment, the squirrel-dad plan, the cross-derssing dad, and much more. One of the best. Seeing Dad with the Crown on at the end is great.

"Come to the Muffin Side."

Streaky Clean:

Storyboard: Walt Dohan

Art Direction: David Smith

Director: Chris Savino and Robert Alevrez

Oh geeze, this is one of the top 10? It's pretty good, I guess. (Nudity=funny.) But with episodes like "Topped off" and the Koosie episodes, it just dosn't compare.

The Grandaddy of all Inventions

Storyboard: Clayton Morrow

Art Direction: David Smith

Director: John McIntyre and Chris Savino

*Sigh* Not any where near the top ten. Funny, I guess, but not Top 10 funny.

Dimwit Dexter

Storyboard: C. Miles Thompson

Director: Genny Tartakovsy

That was the first time I've seen the entire episode.

Wow.

That was strange, bizarre, and surreal.

Belongs in the top 10 for sure.

Filet of Soul

Storyboard: Mike Stern

Art Direction: Craig McCracken

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

I wanna go to the sewer beyond!
Another bizzare episode. Dexter explaning lighting to himself to calm down, the sudden "Widescreen," and Dad. One of the top 10 for sure.

Golden Diskette

Storyboard: David Smith

Art Direction: Craig McCracken

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

Willy Wonka and Steven Halking satire, all in one episode! David Smith does wonderful music segments, and this episode is full of them. But, how can you pick this over "Lab Retto?" (Review Later.)

Beard to be Feared

Storyboard: Paul Rudish

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

Excellent satire of a few things: How people's vision of the world around them is shaped by TV and 70's camp TV. (We got a group of flour smuglers.) Both are pulled off with ease, and this episode belongs in the top 10 with "Aye Aye Eyes" and "Mock 5"

Oh, yeah, read the comic book sequel. It rocks.

Last But Not Beast

Storyboard: Genny Tartakovsky, Craig McCracken, and Paul Rudish.

Art Direction: Paul Rudish

Director: Genny Tartakovsky

The wrap up episode for the first "Saga." Of Dexter's lab. This is the last episode that Genny was supervising director and Craig McCracken and Paul Rudish worked as writers/storyboard artists. After this episode, everyone went to work on the Powerpuff Girls.

Nonetheless, the series would have ended wonderfully if it ened on this note. It's epic, full of Japanese monster movie, Superhero, and various other pop culture refrances. Excellent.

That's the top 10. I should post reviews of Reruns more often. Beacuse reruns are better than new episodes.

These episodes would make the ultimate Dexter's Lab DVD collection in my opinion.

The Mock 5 was an excellent episode filled with spoofs, corny dialogue, and mindless comedy. Its easy to see why its #1.

Aye Aye Eye....brilliant. LOL.

Muffin King....we'll Dexter's mom's muffins are the best. I can't argue with that.

Last But not beast....Anime fans have told me this is their favorite episode, and I must admit it is mine as well.

All great choices. I can't wait :)

I think this show is at its best when it spoofs popular culture. My favorite eps are "Mock Five" (the Speed Racer parody). "Sun, Surf, and Science," where Mandark enters and booby traps a surfing contest and falls prey to his own traps when he learns that Dee Dee, and not the surfer dude she's interested in, is surfing in the surfing contest (think Otto Von Zipper and Frankie or "Bonehead" from the 60's "Beach Party" movies). And I'm starting to take interest in "Paper Route Bout" (the one episode with Dee Dee in it that I don't want to throw a "Bad Call Brick" at her), particularly for its spoofing of Japanese ninja/samurai movies. It would come as no surprise to me if this is the one turned the light bulb on in Genndy's head to make "Samurai Jack."

Mock 5 is great, but highly over-rated. The gags are great. My favorite has got to be Last but not Beast. But my next fav. isn't even on the list. I don't remember the name. It's the one where Mandark disguises himself as Dexter's mom.

Mock 5 forever! "The Big Cheese" is also very good.

But what can top "Lab-bretto"?

That's a very nice Dexter image. How in the world did you find/create it? Is it for you to know and us to find out? :)

I screencapped it off of the TV during the music video "Back to the Lab" that aired 4 times during the Dexter marathon.

Boring song, funky strut.

An army of marching Dexters, cool. My favorite episode is the one with Dexter & Dee-Dee confusing the Action Hank and Powderpuff Pony fan clubs, mostly for the fight sequence at the end.

8:00 p.m. Dexter's Laboratory Mock 5/Muffin King/Aye Aye Eye/Grand Daddy of All Inventions/Streaky Clean
-Mock 5: Ah yes, the Anvil Award winning Mock 5:) This is one of my personal favorites. The Speed Racer dialogue and music fits perfectly! And I LOVED all the Dee Dee gags. Ironic how Dee Dee was the only character in this episode who spoke in a sane fashion (except for her little speech to Mandark). And she looked so cute in those overalls:D
-Muffin King: We clearly see where Dee Dee and Dexter get their unique personality traits:D. This episode was bizarre, but that’s what made it so funny. And seeing Dexter's dad in drag was a riot!
-Aye Aye Eyes: Another one of my faves:) The song was wonderful and it had one of the best Dexter lines ever "Once you've loved Dex, you've loved the best". LOL, That line always cracks me up (and so does Dee Dee's expression after hearing it :D)
-Grand Daddy&Streaky Clean: Season 3.....no comment

9:00 p.m. Dexter's Laboratory Last But Not Beast/Beard To Be Feared/Dimwit Dexter/Filet of Soul/Golden Diskette
-Last But not Beast: What can I say that hasn't been said already? This episode was a great finalé (well, it SHOULD have been the finalé  )
-Beard to be Feared: Great action episode. The best line was
Cop: "We have SWAT teams, attack dogs, and the whole police force mobilized!"
Dexter: "Why don't you send THEM in!?"
-Dimwit Dexter: I'm not too fond of that one
-Filet of Soul: Dexter as a mini-Ghostbuster, how cute! Now I don't feel so bad about flushing my fishes all those years ago:D
-Golden Diskette: The best Willy Wonka spoof ever!

10:00 p.m. Dexter's Laboratory Quackor: Evil Fowl/Sister's Got A Brand New Bag/Paper Route Bout/Mind Over Chatter
-Quackor: Missed it :(
-Sister's got a Brand New Bag: I LOVE this one! The Soul Train gag was well done and the way Dexter went all out to avoid sitting down and watching Dee Dee dance for 20 seconds was priceless! Some critcise the ending for being dull, but I think it was perfect!
-Paper Route Boute: One of the rare episodes where Dexter is nowhere to be seen (excluding Monkey and JF, of coarse). This is the point where Genndy's desire to make an action oriented cartoon starts to show in Dexter's Lab
-Mind Over Chatter: Again, no comment

11:00 p.m. Dexter's Laboratory Lab-Retto/Dyno-Might/Dad Is Disturbed/Pslyghtly Psycho/Momdark
-Lab-Retto: A CLASSIC! This episode had some great moments. My favorite part was the "Do your breathing" scene :D
-DynoMight: *sniff* I wish I had a goofy idiot side-kick. But I have little sisters, so I guess I'm OK :)
-Dad is Disturbed: Another one of my all-time faves:D Dexter's dad really steals the show here. And I loved the cameo by the Rubbles. Favorite line: "WHOO-HOO, IT'S A POP FLY IN THE END ZONE!!"
-Pslyghtly Psycho: The breakfast made for Dexter's mom looked a lot like my cooking:D
-Momdark: *sigh* What the heck? This one was fairly amusing. I liked the "kissing scene" and the ending was pretty funny, too.

-The music video: Better than I expected. I'm not a rap or hip-hop fan, but I might just buy the new Dexter CD after all :D

Wow, I wrote a lot!!!

Over-rated my bleeding brain stem. It's completely dead on. Have ye seen Speed Racer? HUH!?

I didn't say it was not dead on. I said it is over-rated. It's a great episode, in the top ten for sure. But it's not worthy of the worship it receives. I like parodies, but they are not usually my favorite episodes.

And...have I seen Speed Racer? I AM TRIXIE!
