I'm liking it alot more then I thought I would, once you get into the story you really get past the dated animation. I was suprised at how well it still stands up.
I really am starting to like the Universal century time line.

I don't think the animation is that bad. Hey, I.R. do you know what happened in Hand to Hand Combat episode?

That would be Fridays right? Well....
Spoilers....
Amuro was released from confinamant so that he could pilot Gundam, you see Ramba-Ral's lover was leading an attack against White Base, and was preparing to drive a bunch of explosives right into it. Amuro used the Gundam to block her off. But then a Zaku and a fighter plane show up to attack him from both sides. After hitting the Zaku, Amuro then takes on the fighter. Ryu comes out in his flyer and runs a suiscide mission into the jet and kills himself. Giving Amuro enough time to get the explosives to go the other way.

I'm purchasing the DVDs rather than watching them on Toonami, mainly since I missed episodes because of a vacation.
I think the show still holds up extremely well, after the first episode you don't even mind the slightly dated animation. My favorite though is the 08th MS Team which has just awesome animation. Toonami will be bringing over other Gundam OVAs/Series either this year or the next, 0083 is due out on DVD in October or so.
Has anyone picked up the PS2 game, Jounrey to Jaburo? Its okay, I can see how non-fans of the series wouldn't like it.
I'm really get'n obsessed with the show, just like I did with Star Wars :D

I love the show, but you already know that. I have that Jounary to Jaburo game, it could of been done better, but I liked it. I really liked the time spent when Amuro deserted white base. I really got hooked after that. It such a great show.

I caught a clip of Bright Noah's monologue after he found that Ryu died. Man, this english VA needs work in some spots! In the original Japanese, Noah was so overcome with grief he was having trouble talking. This VA had trouble balancing the two.
"Ryu *choke* I *choke* will miss you *sob*. "
Okay, that's not exactly what he said, but the acting needed work here, in my opinion.
Upcoming Gundam shows should be these:
Gundam 0080--Rather quiet side story that takes place in the last two weeks or so of the One Year War on a neutral colony in space. Very character-driven--there are only two Gundam battles in the show. 6 episodes.
Gundam 0083--Takes place about 3 years (hence the 0083) after the One Year War. Basically a bridge between the original Mobile Suit Gundam and Zeta Gundam. 13 episodes. Very nice action and animation.
Zeta Gundam should be airing sometime next year, if the franchise goes well. It's basically a similar story to the original, but with the human drama element played up more and a MUCH higher body count. Very bleak ending compared to the original MSG. It's a 1985 (?) show and it runs about 50 episodes.

Larry Jojo, I wanted to ask you something, do any other major characters die?

Do you want me to spoil? If you want, I'll send you a private message.
I'll just say that yes, someone else important does die near the end. Of course, MOST of the Zeon die as well.

That "Yes" answer is good enough, I don't really want too many things spoiled.

Well, the original creator WAS nicknamed "Kill 'em all" Yoshiyuki Tomino, so he has a reputation for deaths. But he was rather generous in Mobile Suit Gundam in that there were less deaths than in some of his other projects, such as Zeta Gundam, which killed off MANY main characters. Or Space Runaway Ideon, in which EVERYBODY died.
He was not, however, involved with many of the 90s Gundam series, like Gundam Wing or 08th MS Team.

I must say, thay killing off main characters, while sad, makes everything more believable, wouldn't you say?

I personally think Tomino was in a bad mood in those days. In fact, he's always in a bad mood...;)
But if his new 1999 Turn A Gundam is any indication, he's softened over the years and has become more sensitive to his characters. Not that he didn't care for his characters back then, but it's just that he was more sadistic in putting his characters through misery rather than adventure...

I don't think main characters dieing makes it anymore "Believable", though it does bring more drama to the story.

How many of you knew that Ryu was going to die? I could just tell from the start.

I read that he died on a fan site before I saw the episode.
I like Moblie Suit Gundam. It reminds me of Voltron's animation and Gundam wings Plot

heh, I guess I'm not the only one having flashbacks to Voltron while watching MSG.:)

Most anime deaths are foreshadowed--look at the last two episodes of Cowboy Bebop.
I think the formula here isn't the "surprise" of death, but rather, the tension working up to it. Anticipation of something expected, as Alfred Hitchcock might have said.
