This week in comics was a strange week for me. I bought two titles that I don't normally buy and don't normally like.
JLA 69 — This book wasn't really worth buying. Metal balls went around and drafted the JLA members that you see on the cover. That's it. The art was worse than it is with Manhke. C-
Green Lantern 153 — God, I hate to admit this, but I kind'a enjoyed the issue. Maybe it's just because I was craving a Green Lantern story (even though what I got was a Kyle Rayner story,) and I don't know. Winick can't write dialogue. He makes Kyle sound so unnatural. Eaglesham can't draw. So whatever. But I enjoyed it anyway. I can't wait until we see how Kyle handles the gay beating and deals with the shock of it. GL #155 sounds like it — gasp! — might be good! B
What did you guys get? And can anyone better summarize the Green Lantern issue? I did a poor job.

Today I got:

X-factor #4 - A great ending to a nice mini-series.

New X-men #130 - Lots of stuff happend here, I don't want to give away anything just read it. The art isn't really good and it stays centered on Xavier, Jean, Fantomex and Weapon XII...

Ultimates #6 - It just keeps getting better. The team seems to be getting worse we have a horny loser (Banner), a rich guy that could die anywhere from 5 months to 5 years from a golfball sized tumor in his head (Tony), A guy that goes crazy and hits his wife when his pride is hurt (Giant Man), Wasp is injured if not dead, and a hippie that doesn't want to join the team. Only Captain seems normal :p

Next week should be good: Spiderman/Black Cat #2, Ultimate X-men #21, P.P. Spiderman #47. Later...

Dude! You stole my thread! I'm back home now and you knew it and you stole my thread!

For those who need to be reminded, I said this thread would be posted by 4:30 PM pacific time every Wednesday...

Anyway...onto my half-hearted reviews...

POWERS #22 - I'll say it again for my own amusement: Best freakin' book on the market.

THE ULTIMATES #6 - Just gets better and better. Love the way Millar's so clearly dividing it into books.

NEW X-MEN #130 - Man, I was thinking Kordey's art was gonna be good from here on out. At least Van Sciver's got the next few.

GL #153 - I'd try to re-sumarize, but I'm not much for spoilers. I personally love this comic, so I'd be biased anyway. Excellent stuff here.

IMPULSE #89 - Way out of character for Jay. Shame.

NIGHTWING #72 - Eh. Last issue was sooooo much better.

YOUNG JUSTICE #48 - Finally, YJ's back on track.

Batgirl 31- Eh this arc hasn't been the greatest, not bad but just not up to the usual BG standards I hold. Next issue does look real cool with Robin, Spolier,Green Arrow, Batgirl though, nice cover.

GL 153- Perhaps I am biased but I do like the occaisonal "day in the life of the hero" stories. I mean you can't be fighting Sinestro everyday *wierd considering he's dead* So I did enjoy this little take on a high school reunion, funny concept if you think about it. Guy is saving the world a whole bunch of times while the other former HS students go to work at 5 everyday.

I too am looking more forward to 155 than 154, which I'm not really looking forward too, but going to buy to find out "this big change" And I am really enjoying the art for GL as well.

First, here are the rest of my reviews from last week.

Spider-Man Daredevil #1 I don't know if it was a one shot or the begining of a series/mini-series, but it stinks. Nothing special here, and the heroes don't even work together. A waste of time and money.

Uncanny X-Men #410 I loved it! This issue is dominated by a heartwarming tale of Xavier and Hank recruiting a new student to the institute. Very touching and well told and the new character shows a promising future. The Uncanny team is here too and they get into a cliff-hanger that has me looking forward to the next issue.

Here's what I got this week:

Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Volume 1 (TPB)
Get Kraven #3 (of 7)
Green Arrow #4 (back issue)
Green Lantern #153
Iron Man #58
JLA #69
Transformers #4
X-Factor #4

Here's what I thought of a couple books:

JLA #69
I thought this was a fun issue. It was a quicker read than previous issues, and jumped from scene to scene without lingering too long. Guichet’s art is better here than his previous work in Man of Steel (where he was also a regular fill-in for Mahnke). Still, it’s great to see Firestorm again. And Hawkgirl?! I never thought I’d see the day SHE was a member of the Justice League......oh wait ;)

ULTIMATES #6
This is by far one the BEST books on the shelves today, and certainly the best Marvel book next to Paradise X (in my opinion). This month's story was much slower than #5, but after the nonstop destruction and excitement of the Hulk's rampage during that issue, this provided us with a much needed chance to catch our breath (and let the characters recoup).

TOYFARE #62
I'm a little upset with Toyfare right now. They put out such a great magazine, but an article in issue 62 about action figures for the upcoming Star Trek: Nemesis revealed major spoilers about the film which I didn't want to know just yet. Maybe this info already leaked out, but I like to stay away from spoilers for the most part. They gave no warning.
Still a great magazine, though.

I plan on getting: JLA #69, StormWatch: Team Achilles #2, possibly Detective Comics #773 from last week. I'll post my reviews later.

Is Gotham Girls any good like the webisodes??

I'll update this post later with more info.

I got:

Big O 2-1 and 2-2: I skipped the first series of issues, thinking this was just going to be a re-hash of the show. But, I recently decided to go ahead and pick up the collected volume when it comes out, and I figured I might as well start picking up the individual issues starting with this second "series". Not a bad little book.

Blade of the Immortal: Our heroin finally gets someretribution for the terrible abuse and rape she's been put through for the past 2 or 3 issues. About time!

Iron Man #400-current: I used to be a big fan of Mike Grell way back when, in his Green Arrow days. So when I noticed this week that he's been writing Iron Man, i figured I'd give it a shot. I went back and picked up some of the back issues that he's done as well, finguring #400 would be an ok place to jump in. Now that I've read it, I'm not sure what I think. This last three parter was ok, but didn't really grab me. I gotta say though, I absoutely love the art in this book - there are some of the greatest action poses I've ever seen, and the artist and colorist make Iron Man look incredibly cool. I'll probably pick up the next few issues and continue to check it out for a while.

Nightwing #71 & 71: Another book I've tried just for the writer. I'm a big fan of the work Devin did on Batman: Gotham Knights, though I've only had a passing interest in the Nightwing character in the past. So, I figured I'd give this one a shot, and so far, I'm not disappointed. I'll probably continue to pick up this series as well for a while.

This week I got....

Azrael 93

Batgirl 31

Legends of the DK 158

Green Lantern 153 - Glad to see your a big fan Kid Flash. I am too (althought I don't enjoy Winnicks propensity to be a bit preachy at times) But this is a great book!!!! BTW - you gotta reclaim your mantle dude! I've wanted to start this thread many times in the past but I know this is usually your turf - first it was Cogliostro - now Barry - take it back my man!!! :D No offence to both you guys, just breakin' 'em :D

Harley Quinn 23 - please God, let this book get better again!

JLA 69 (CAN'T WAIT for this ONE)

Nightwing 72 (still gotta read 71)

Young Justice 48

I haven't read anything yet from this week, but I will soon. I just got Superman 166 + the original Return to Krypton arc on ebay so I gotta read that so I can get to the Return to Krypton PT 2 arc. Man I'm just so far behind!!!!

Here's what I got this week:

Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Volume 1 (TPB)
Get Kraven #3 (of 7)
Green Arrow #4 (back issue)
Green Lantern #153
Iron Man #58
JLA #69
Transformers #4
X-Factor #4

Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Volume 1 (TPB) I'm two chapters from the end. I guess I don't know much about miller, I was a little misled. I bought this thinking it was written by Miller, but it is only drawn by him. Surprisingly though, it is a great TPB. I recently read a couple issues of Peter Parker from the same year ('79 & '80) and this is far superior work. I'm not familiar with the writer, Roger McKenzie, but he did a great job. Miller's art is breathtaking. Check out those close ups of the Hulk. Now I'm sure he was being lazy with the art for DK2.

Get Kraven #3 (of 7) I'm loving this series. In this issue Kraven and his friend Timber get a full on dose of the corruption and greed of the Hollywood film industry as Kraven struggles to find a hit film to produce while Timber looks for work as an actress. I highly recomend this tounge in cheek farce to any die hard cinephile or anyone with ties to the entertainment industry. It is brilliant if you care for that sort of thing.

Green Arrow #4 (back issue) This is a better issue in the 'Quiver' arc. I don't have much else to say about it. I don't usually like the art in this book, but I like the way Aquaman looks.

Green Lantern #153 Filler issue. We'll see what the big deal is next month I guess. Contrary to statements above I like this book's art. Facial expressions are captured very well, and Jade loooks great.

Iron Man #58 This is my favorite title on the shelves right now. I highly recomend it to all. If you aren't reading Iron Man you are missing out on something very special. If you asked me my favorite super hero, Iron Man wouldn't even make the top ten, yet Mike Grell and his team are producing such a terrific book, I'm falling in love with it. That said, #58 was actually a notch bellow what they've been putting out. A merely good issue in what has been a great book for several month's. Clayface, your making a great choice starting at #400 (55). You won't be sorry.

JLA #69 Like everyone else has said, nothing much happened. It's cool to see the new lineup I guess, but I wish they hadn't pictured them on the cover. It kind of spoiled all the fun.

Transformers #4 This month Transformers finally delivers two things I've been waiting for. Action, and the Transformers on the cover (Constructacons) are actually in the issue (Devestator). Anyway, this is the best issue yet. No complaints.

X-Factor #4 I was very disapointed in this mini. I started buying it when issue #1 came out thinking it was an ongoing series, and silly me, I thought it would actually feature the team it was named after. As it is the original members make a very brief apearance in #3, and the mini does have it's highlites, but over all I felt let down by the whole thing.

I got Harley Quinn # 23 and
Nightwing # 72. Nightwing was every bit as good as last issue and I was glad to finally see Amy back in the story, and well as the "Tarantula" guy! Devin is definitely going to be good for this book!

I got:

JLA #69--I enjoyed this issue. I wrote more on this issue in the review thread for it.

STORMWATCH: TEAM ACHILLES #2--I don't know if anyone else here at TZ reads this comic, but I am enjoying it. I never read previous versions of StormWatch, or the Authority, or any WildStorm comic, but I like the art, and the story is good. Good stuff.

Hmmm...

JLA #69 - I didnt mind it that much. I thought it was an improvement on the last issue though.

ASM #43 - didnt like this one much at all. The only thing I liked was the continuing MJ thread.

Buffy #47 - Wow. I really like the direction Lobdell is taking this book. But then I'm a HUGE fan of Faith, so how I could I not love this issue.

KODT #70 - the main strip didnt do much for me, but I really liked the Q&A strips (esp the Coupons one) and the Medlers of Kataan strip.

Nodwick #14 & #15 - I definitely preferred #14, but #15 was pretty impressive to with its jousting contest. What I want is a Piffany spin-off.

Midnight Nation #12 & Rising Stars #18 - havent read 'em yet as I have to refresh myself with the last few issues first.

Recently, it hasn't been worth the money. But pick up all the Waid/Ramos stuff, as well as the Dezago/Van Sciver run if you want good IMPULSE. It's really strong stuff.
