John Delaney's Sketch of the Week #33 - Battle of the Runners Up #3

Welcome to "John Delaney's Sketch of the Week"!

The Intro
Out of the kindness of his art, John Delaney is doing something big for the fans - an exclusive weekly sketch for the fans who frequent Toon Zone!

Every week, he will draw a new picture based on the results of the poll. That means that *we* fans choose what the image will be!

The Low Down:
The contest will begin every Monday, and end at 5pm Eastern the following Friday, giving fans a solid five days to choose. You can only vote ONCE! John will then draw the sketch over the weekend and we'll present at the beginning of the following week. The characters must be animation/comic characters drawn in the Animated style, and if you have any requests for future polls, send me an email with your ideas! Keep an eye out on the Comics Forum for all the latest action!

You can also post your thoughts on the poll in this thread.

The Rules:
We ask that all users encourage each other to abide by the rules.

Rule #1
Respect others on the boards. It's one thing to disagree with the opinions of others and discuss it. It's another to insult them by verbally bashing the choices of the poll. Do not insult any choices on the poll.

Rule #2
If rule 1 cannot be adhered to, you will be warned. If the situation happens again, banning will occur. There is no strike three.

Rule #3
The moderators reserve the right to suspend the poll for a week (or more) if they deem that the situation warrants.

Rule #4
Campaigning is allowed and encouraged, but in consideration of everyone with slower connections, all images should be thumbnailed. If an image program is not available to assist in that, then they must be linked to. Any post with images larger than 300 pixels in width, will have to be deleted.

I had to go with Robin. The last few times Robin was in the poll John said that he had an idea for a Robin sketch that would make the fans of all the different Robins very happy. That statement piqued my curiosity, but each time there was a character I wanted to see more.

Plus if Robin wins Bird_Boy gets more avatar fodder. ;)


That said, GO ROBIN! But if Vash wins that would be very cool too. :D

Man, another tough decision! My choice was among: Fantastic Four, Robin (the Boy Wonder), and everyone's favorite video plumber, Mario. It was a difficult choice but I went with Fantastic 4. I LOVE BEN "THE THING" GRIMM! He's so funny! Hopefully, this time he and the rest will "clobber" out the competition! lol Although, if they don't, I still would like Mario to make it.

I'm undecided between Robin (wk 22) and Super Mario (Mario 64, wk 22) . I don't know which G.I. Joe is in the running, but it would be my #3 pick.

All the other characters (except for Vash the Stampede (Trigun) and Gir (Invader Zim) since I know nothing about them) just look ordinary (including The Fantastic Four).

Each vote I choose is mostly based on different versions (one of the reasons I voted for Supergirl a few weeks ago). Since Robin has had different looks over the years and Mario has had some as well (although not as much), those are my two choices.

Hmm, should I be loyal to Batman or Nintendo this week (I miss my Nintendo stuff)?? Help me decide, please.

Actually, with a tie, John has the option to either choose one of the winners or draw both winners, it's completely up to him.

Who cares if you don't like a character. Support your character, don't say "Don't vote for Character X because they Suck!" or "Don't vote for Character X because they are a rip off!" Continue this behavior, and you will be banned from the poll for one week.

It's actually the worst if Colin has to yell at you in this poll, cuz Colin is the guy who runs it, and decides whether users behaviors are decent enough to warrant whether or not the poll should go on the next week, or if you guys need a week to check your egos...

Also, I will be slightly adjusting/enforcing of the rules starting next week, so everyone keep an eye out for that. We've had far too much bashing of characters going on lately, so it's going to stop, one way or another...

I dont see how you can call Rocko a rip off. The style of the animation was different, and I found plots and storylines represented differently. it's not the most antibacterialized cartoon (neither of them are--- they literally roll in dirt lol (a good thing) and both sets of main characters get the crud beat out of them and go into deep details of---- STUFF at times.).

The theme songs are different. I LOVE The B-52's Rocko theme, and I love the upbeat Ren & Stimpy theme.

How the heck do YOU see it as a rip off? When they were on here, I watched both equally because they both presented me with their own kind of bizarre humor and each took their placed in television toon pop culture for me. It's like calling Futurama a rip off of the simpsons. Despite the OBVIOUSNESS of them both being from the genius Mr. Groening, they handle things somewhat differently. Characters are different, and you have different plots but they both tie in to the spontaneous humor that the writers are known for. They are so alike, but Futurama is NOT a rip off.

I just do not see the ripoff-ness of Rocko and Ren and Stimpy. PLEASE enlighten me.

At this point, Robin is ahead by one vote over Vash (about 15 minutes ago they were tied for 1st lol) with F4 close behind.

Don't worry, Marvel fans. There's still plenty of time for them to catch up. I wanna see them get drawn!

Of course, I'm still rooting for both Robin and Mario.

As for Vash, well unfortunately, I'm not a Japanime fan like a lot of you are. WHY CAN'T ANIME BE LIKE IT WAS WHEN I WAS A CHILD?! :( I'm talking about Battle of the Planets/G-Force, Voltron (I still have my Lion and 3-team big figures), and of course, the original Transformers (I still have a lot of my old changable figures including both original Optimus and Megatron). However, it still would be interesting to see a drawing of him, considering I've never seen the Trigun cartoon series. It looks pretty decent, IMHO, compared to some of the other anime I've seen over the past few years (I won't mention any because I don't want to offend anyone.) :)

Anyhow, may the best character win! (I still hope it's F4. Heh-heh)

Besides that comment being completely rude, it's also pretty inacurate. Rocko was way different than Ren & Stimpy. I'll admit they share some similarities, like a little bit of gross humor now and then, but're Rocko's brand of humor is less like Ren & Stimpy and more like Spongebob Squarepants (whice makes sense, considering many of the same people worked on both shows). That, and the art styles are totally different.
