Nightwing is Dick Grayson, the original Robin. He gave up being Robin after a falling out period with Batman. He traveled the globe in order to re-evaluate his life, and learned skills from other cultures. He returned years later as Nightwing.

That's the story for the animated Nightwing. Nightwing's comic origin is much more complex.
