Drafty, Isn’t It? with Ralph Phillips and directed by Chuck Jones
90 Day Wondering with Ralph Phillips and directed by Chuck Jones

Are these considering to be in the “WB Looney Tunes” Canon of shorts or not?

Were they every released or shown outside the US Army?

How do these differ from the work the WB artists did with Snafu?

Interested in comments/opinions! :D

While produced by WB, they are not Looney Tunes, but rather miscellaneous cartoons. They do not belong to any of the four distribution packages.

1. they are not LT's (imnho*)

2. It would be interesting to 'follow the money' on these - I suspect they were paid for by the US army, as they are nothing but recruitment ads.

3. These are about encouraging young men to enlist - SNAFU/Hook were training devices for those in the military.

I do not know, but I would assume so - it wouldn't make sense to create ads and never show them...

Didn't they say on "Toonheads: The Lost Cartoons" that the cartoons were disributed to high schools? I doubt they ever made it to TV packages, being produced for the U.S. army. There was also another cartoon called "A Hitch In Time," made for the Air Force, but it doesn't have Ralph.

According to Beck's book, the cartoons are about enlisting("Drafty Isn't It"), and then re-enlisting ("90 Day Wandering"). Wierd that the "Drafty, Isn't It" was made after "90 Day Wandering," almost like a "prequel."

God, I'm bored...

OK - 1950's - Cold War - the Commies are going to invade tomorrow - gotta get a HUGE army NOW...kill all Commies...

that was the mindset.
this got you:

a. Vietnam (US was there from 1956 - 1975)

b. Massive recruitment/draft efforts (incl. Elvis Presley)

c. The 'Inter-state System of Defense Highways' (now you know their full name). Follow the money:
the US paid 90% of construction costs (the states paid the other 10%) and 50% of maintainance.

c. The school lunch program - the army was appalled at the health of the cannon fodder it was getting in the draft (caused by childhood malnutrition), and wanted to make sure future draftees got at least one healthy meal a day. (and you thought it was from the goodness of their hearts, right?).
(then the pro-military Reaganites cut the school-lunch program - love it?)
