View Full Version : Did Bugs just say what I think he said?

In the cartoon where Bugs was part of an experiment, there's this scene where he's trying to entertain those doctors. When the scientist attempts to grab Bugs, he pushes him away saying something that sounded like,"You're crapping up my act!"Now, I'm not sure if he either said crapping, or cramping, but what do you think?

My guess is either "cramping" or "crabbing", although "crabbing" is unlikely, as I've never heard that expression before.

The word is "crabbing". It was, indeed, once a common expression.
I worry about the ammunition we give censors, guys, when we engage in this kind of speculation. We're on the way to a situation where scenes are cut from cartoons not just because they say something offensive, but because they could be mistaken for saying something offensive.
In the case of Disney's CLOCK CLEANERS, such censorship has already been done. (Donald Duck's lines "sez you" and "I'll bust you, you doggone snake-in-the-grass" were mistaken for swearing on the Internet— despite the fact that the Hays Code in 1937 would never have allowed the duck to actually swear— and the cartoon was eventually censored on DVD to remove the dialogue.)

WHAT!?! Disney censored Clock Cleaners on the Mickey Mouse in Living Color DVD!?! Are you sure of this?

Yes, unfortunately.
"Sez you!" is replaced with "aw nuts", dubbed in from a different cartoon (not sure of which one, but you can hear barking dog SFX behind Donald's voice).
"I'll bust you, you doggone snake-in-the-grass" is replaced with a lengthy batch of unidentifiable, electronically mixed quacking.

David Gerstein is of course right!!!
Siiiiiiiiigh I wish before posting anything about "offensive material" or swearing or any such thing that people would notice Jon's careful warning about such (okay, okay I suggested it to him ;) ). The other thing is, maybe all of us should consider keeping a DICTIONARY next to the computer for whenever we hear a word that we don't understand...
Jon Cooke's warning...
"Administrator's Note: Discussion about "offensive" material that hasn't been censored yet should be kept to a minimum or done through Private Messages. Thank-you"

Donald Wildmon, head of the American Family Association, was the one who thought Donald was saying something other than "Sez you!" back in 1995. He's the same guy who thought Mighty Mouse was sniffing cocaine.

Sorry, it won't happen again

It might have been from Orphan's Benifit.

Doesn't Disney say their cartoons are UNCENSORED on that DVD? I know they do on the Silly Symphonies one. If Disney lies about something being uncensored, then is that illegal? I know they lied about it when they released Fantasia.

I don't recall seeing any where that the Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies DVD sets were uncensored. I believe Leonard Maltin even notes that the version on DVD of "The Three Little Pigs" is edited in his opening, even though the unedited Jewish peddler scene is used in the introduction...

Brandon,
Interesting suggestion (re: ORPHANS' BENEFIT). But there's no barking dog SFX behind Donald's "aw, nuts" in that cartoon, so the dub inserted in CLOCK CLEANERS must come from somewhere else...

"Clock Cleaners" is included as a bonus cartoon on the recent DVD release of The Great Mouse Detective (as is "Donald's Crime). "clock Cleaners" is censored in the same way it was on the otherwise excellent "Mickey Mouse In Living Color" set.

At least I've got the uncensored version that I taped off Disney Channel. I would think that if Disney was aiming these Disney Treasures DVDs to actual fans, then wouldn't they show them all uncensored? At least the rest of them are that way.

If someone thinks the words are different, they will censor it based on that. It is not like they did that on purpose.

I know the issue was the Bakshi version of Mighty Mouse, but I still can't quite figure out what the problem was.
Interesting that Clock Cleaners is on the Mouse Detective DVD. I remember when I saw that movie in the theater on it's initial release (it's still one of my favorite Disney features, but I know I'm a minority on that.) Clock Cleaners played before the feature. I also know that the uncensored version is on one of those really ancient VHS tapes that Disney released in the 80's. I've gotten a few of them from half.com for very reasonable prices.

I'm not exactly sure either, but it has something to do with him smelling a flower, and the petals accidentially going up his nose or something like that.

The Mighty Mouse controversy was pushed by the Rev. Donald Wildman, a fundamentalist Baptist preacher whose group operated its own watchdog media organization. They claimed the flower petals he was sniffing was actually cocaine, and the problems it caused led CBS to throw in the towel on the series rather than try and battle the story already out in the public.

Wow...flowers interpreted as cocaine? Give me a break! Hey, Good for the preacher to be watching out for things, but if he was worried about its influence on kids, wouldn't logic tell you that it would make kids sniff FLOWERS, not drugs? Hey, be groovy!allergies, not addiction, man! Wonder what that guy thinks of "South Park" or some other controversial cartoon these days?

No, the reason they got suspicious was because Mighty Mouse was suddenly re-energized when he sniffed the flowers...in other words, he "got high."

Hmm, if I recall correctly, that Bakshi Mighty Mouse cartoon, "The Littlest Tramp", had MM sniffing a "MAGIC" flower, which can fill anyone with energy just by breathing it in.
I can actually think of a certain classic cartoon that has much of its plot based on...well...pot! :o But don't worry, I won't mention what title it is ;)......but it seems CN already knows about it, which is why CN hasn't aired it in years!
