Yeah that's reeeal funny. I'm in a twist on which system to buy, part of which is wanting to buy a Dreamcast just for Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (and Capcom vs. SNK) and look at that! The title is in ALL lists so far! Isn't that special! ;)

See I was thinking of buying a Dreamcast because of Marvel vs. Capcom 2, because I bought a Playstation soley for Marvel vs. Capcom. (no logic behind it, just obsession). Now the games I would own if I had the system would be:

Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom vs. SNK

So tell me something fellas, as far as MvC2 goes, is it worth it? Is in fact a carbon copy of one's experience playing the MvC2 arcade? Cuz boy did THAT bowl me over! The art and graphics are gorgeous. And oh those stills of the three winning characters at the end of a round....

Dude get one now before they're gone. Sega's ditching the thing, and its firesale all the way to next year spring. It's only 79 dollars, cheepest system on the market, and ou still get really good graphics and pther good stuff.

I'm currently concentarating on getting a PS2 right now, but darn my "Dead" system still has life in it.

I knew Sega was jumping ship with the Dreamcast, but you brought the realization to me that it's much more severe than I originally thought. You say I should pick one up right away? That would mean I should change my original plan.....

At a nearby Electronics Boutique I found the system for $100. But I thought I could wait em out more and make them lower the price even moreso. But Funcoland is indeed selling NEW systems for 79. Thanks for the very importand and usefull info Joey!

I think I have a plan.

small side note: Does anyone know if the following games found for the Playstation 2?

Marvel vs. Capcom
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Capcom vs. SNK

None of them are on PS2. All of them are on DC. At Circut City I found a copy of Capcom VS. SNK for $20, it was the last copy. Instead I bought Sonic Adventure. At Electronics B. they have a preowned C VS. SNK for $35! But I paid alot for M VS. C2. $40 preowned. At the counter I heard the nerds... er, cashiers say "RARE GAME!" oh boy.....

Trust me Nightwing if you buy a Dreamcast you won't regret it! With the price drop, and some of the best games ever for a console(Shenmue, Soul Caliber, RECV, HOTD, MVC2, UFC) nad several others, you can't go wrong. Especially since N64's dead, and costs more than the DC.

As for what I own... ack. Since I review games for the paper, the companies send them to me for free. I give a lot of them away, but I've still got more than 20 of them. I can't remember what all I have... let me post them when I get home. :)

I rent nearly all my Dreamcast games! I do, however, buy games I find myself renting often, though THAT's rare. The ones I DO own are:

Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3

Pity the Dreamcast flopped....at least you can get good deals on them as others have said...bah. If only Sega had staying power and confidence in its system...

Actually, Hatter, you must have a cushy job....getting free games, playing them, and then just typing up a review...what's it like?

The Mad Hatter
08-18-2001, 03:10 PM
Oh man, I've opened up a can of worms here!

Here's the full poop, for those of you who don't know... I review games freelance for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. That means that I don't get to sit around and play games all day for work, it's just a side thing I do (my day job is as a business editor at another paper). But the D-G pays decently for it, and the free games are a nice bonus.

They don't really have a "video game columnist" position... I created the column. I was a news clerk there and was frustrated with transcribing obituaries and stock reports, as I wanted to write something "real" regularly. So I thought, what could I write about that hasn't already been covered? Eventually, I hit on video games. The features folk asked me to do up a sample column, they liked it, and ran it on a regular basis. In fact, that column helped get me a better writing position at that paper, and eventually the editorship at another paper. But because the column has always been freelance for pay purposes, the D-G still lets me do it.

If you want to check it out, go here: www.ardemgaz.com , click on the "Weekend" button, and look for "Pixelated." My name is Robert Evatt, by the way.

And sorry, I can't pick up any "guest" reviewers... my column's short enough as it is (I can only go into the barest of details, ugh), they pay me special to do it, and they prefer that their writers be from Arkansas. Also, because of an ad revenue crunch, there's a possibility my column might get cancelled in the near future, but the editors there like me (and I've passed a threatened May deadline with no cancellation) so there's hope. (I just hope it lasts till November, so Nintendo will send me a Gamecube... THEN they can cancel me! :) )

As for what it's like.... well, I get an average of 3-5 games from various companies a week. I'll pick two and rip into them after my day job. I try to write for as wide an audience as possible, so often I'll pick types of games I don't really dig (like sports games) and be fair, or I'll pick really bad games that are popular (like Deer Hunter). And there's the problem: with playing good games comes playing bad games, and make myself play the bad games for at least a few hours to give it a chance and really get a feel for it. And often, I'll get a good game that I'll want to spend a lot of time with, but then I'll have to stop playing it to review something else. It took me forever to finish Baldur's Gate II because of that. Also, believe it or not, the column has me playing much more than I would rather do... but because it pays, I'll do it.

I get more games than I can play, and I estimate that I give nearly 2/3rds of them away to friends and co-workers. So don't ask if I can send any free ones to you, these guys already have dibs. :)

And I've played Street Fighter Alpha 3. It was darn solid and wonderfully animated, but since fighters aren't really my bag (they have to be really creative to catch my long-term interest, like Marvel vs. Capcom 2) I, er, gave it away.

Bird Boy

I read a magazine called Game Informer...and they are always complaining about crappy games..in fact..in the last issue, it has some new Mickey Mouse DJ Music thing for Playstation. The oppening introduction (which I laughed my butt off at) was:

"M-I-C-K-E-WHY...WHY OH GOD WHY?!?!?!?!?!"

They even commented on a game so bad (some Action Man game for GameBoy) as they'd rather "Eat a vomit burger with poo poo sauce" than play it again.

So, I guess free games aren't what they're cracked up to be...especially when you have to review them, and play it. I commend people like you hatter...So pick up a BUD Mr. Video Game Reviewer..because without you..we'd be spending money on the crappiest of crappy games! :)

BourgeoisBuffoon

I agree with crappy games. Especially on the Game Boy. Gosh darn it, EVERYTHING mildly popular is getting a game on that thing....heck, even The Grinch! It's those things that keep video games down on respectability...

...BTW, nice column! It's a good read. Congrats on creating the position also.

The Mad Hatter
08-18-2001, 11:10 PM
Oh yeah. There's a common game reviewer rant for you... how most games based on licensed characters are mediocre or bad. There are some exceptions (the Bond games come to mind), but for the most part, companies know that gullible people will buy the games based on the characters alone. Remember how crap the N64 Superman game was? It sold a ton of copies. Bleh. But video games are like movies... lots of bad ones are popular.

And I'm glad you like my column! Write in and tell my editors not to cancel me! :)

Jowy Blight
08-18-2001, 11:56 PM
Remember how crap the N64 Superman game was?

I'd say that Superman64 is the worst N64 game made, right down there with Quest 64.

The Mad Hatter

If you're feeling masochistic, go rent Carmageddon 64 sometime, and you'll see just how bad a game can be.

Check out the IGN review, it's hilarious:

I can't wait till I turn 16 that day i'm going to go apply to Funcoland. Videogames are my life (outside of Batman) i'm subsribed to like 7 gaming Magizines I would love to become a reveiwer. My dream is to go to E3:D

BourgeoisBuffoon

Hm....I'll try to write up that letter, Hatter.

I should apply to a gaming mag too! I already spend a lot of my day in front of a screen of some time, and I do not mind writing a column! It WOULD be a great job!

Hey, Firefly, do you have to wait till you are 16 to get a job too? It sucks....

BTW, never played Superman64....but I hear the point was to go through a lot of loops. Or was it worse than that?

Firefly
08-19-2001, 05:32 PM
Yea sadly I do have to wait till i'm 16 to work

Superman 64 was a lot worse than just flying through hoops but I thought the multiplayer was half decent
