Huzzah! More Halo!

http://www.bungie.net/perlbin/blam.pl?file=/site/1/news/stories/halo_2_announced.html

After Halo shipped, a lot of people assumed they knew what Bungie would do next. "Of course they'll do a sequel to Halo," went the prevailing wisdom. "They'd be stupid not to capitalize on the success of the first game. And there are so many loose ends to tie up. Yeah, there's definitely a sequel in the works." So it may not come as a surprise to you, dear readers, that we formally announced Halo 2 at X02 in New York City this morning.

I think I can assume that anyone reading about Halo 2 on Bungie's own Halo site probably knows the basics already. You already know Halo 2 is the sequel to Halo. You already know Halo walked off with a ton of rave reviews and Game-of-the-Year awards. You already know the bar has been raised and expectations for a sequel are high. You already know Bungie has no intention of disappointing anyone.

What you really want to know is: "What does it look like? What's new? What's the solo campaign all about? What about multiplayer?" And of course the all-important "When can I get my hands on it?"

The game itself is everything you loved about the original Halo, but with all the knobs turned up to 11 this time round. This is not a quickie "Halo 1.5" follow-up using the same engine. We are using a completely rewritten graphics engine which allows our artists to work in previously unimaginable complexity and detail. Anyone who thinks the original Halo stretched the Xbox's graphical abilities to the limit is mistaken. There are gorgeous new realms to be explored, and Halo 2 will take you there. There will be several new weapons in addition to the reliable old standards from the first game. Not to mention the new vehicles you'll ride into battle. Or the many new enemies you'll face. If you had a hard time with the handful of Covenant races you met in the first game, you may wish to start practicing now; you'll need it when they unleash the rest of their army.

Halo 2 returns you to the role of the Master Chief - still humanity's best weapon against the Covenant. Their defeat at Halo was only temporary, and they are pursuing their goal - the complete obliteration of humankind - with renewed zeal. Human military forces are exhausted and unable to stave off the Covenant's rapid advance toward Earth. Even with the Master Chief back in action, the situation looks dire - and this is at the beginning of the game, before things get a lot worse. In true Bungie tradition, the solo campaign in Halo 2 deepens and expands upon the story that began in the first game: old questions will be answered, new mysteries will unfold, and the truly epic nature of the story will finally be revealed.

Multiplayer is an entirely different kettle of fish. Halo 2 is designed from the ground up to support internet multiplayer games over Xbox Live™. You're no longer limited to playing LAN games against friends who live nearby. What's more, the multiplayer experience is being completely redesigned. The first Halo offered just a glimpse of what we originally had in mind; now, in Halo 2, our designers' vision will come to glorious, explosive fruition.

In all honesty, your humble author is a bit giddy with excitement over this game, and I think you will be too. For a quick look at what you can expect to see, check out our Screenshots section. There are seven new Halo 2 screenshots available, including three shots exclusive to bungie.net. These are taken from the Halo 2 trailer shown to the press this morning, which will be released to the internet soon. While you're there, we've also got four glorious new desktops to spiff up your computer. We'll have plenty of Halo 2 coverage here at bungie.net in the months ahead, so be sure to check back.

My God, is this ever going to be a beautiful game. I can't wait until next Christmas.

Inevitable, I suppose.

Yet God will not bless Bungie; in fact, He shall smite them, for they hath sold their very soul to the devil.

Based on how insanely good this game looks more than a year before it's made, I'd say that Satan probably had a part in it.

Geez, Halo 1 still isn't on PC yet and they're already making a second one!

Although Halo started out as a Mac/PC game before Bungie allied themself with the Master of Evil, it will never come to a desktop system as long as it is the only game selling Xboxes (and it is). I guarantee you.

... Huh.

So it's taking them a year to port an Xbox game to PC. And Bungie isn't even doing it.

Since, again, Halo was originally a PC/Mac game anyway, this all leads to one conclusion... Microsoft is stupid.

But what would I know? I'm just a "silly turd."

Well, yeah. Like Psycho Fox has been saying over in the "OS of DOOM!" thread, XP is basically Amiga's OS 4, but with the Microsoft name slapped on it. They're too lazy to come up with their own products, so they steal others & brainwash the public with the Windows name. And it works. And now, instead of using the code that Bungie probably still has, they're using Gearbox to do the transition (which isn't really all that bad a thing). It's kind of stupid that they aren't letting Bungie, the company that started Halo on the PC Path port the game, but I suppose there are worse studios to do it than Gearbox. It's a real ass-backwards way of doing things.

Ehuh? I don't see how that could be... Amiga's OS is owned by Compaq (I think), not MS, and it's definitely not compatible with Windows programs... Did some sort of ultra-bizarre licensing thing go on that I'm not aware of?

Well, that annd the fact that since the Xbox is ~90% off-the-shelf PC hardware in the first place, it shouldn't take a freakin' year to port... especially considering the fact that it was PC-bound in the first place. They're intentionally delaying it.

They might not just port it; they might also be making improvements to the game to make it more worthwhile. Of course, what are the odds of that happening?

I wouldn't be surprised if XP = Amiga's OS 4. After ME failed miserably, Microsoft needed something to fall back on.

What I gathered from Psycho Fox's post is that Amiga's OS 4 does the exact same things as Microsoft's Windows XP, but the software is about 8 years old. Thus, Microsoft "stole" the technology, altered it to Windows, and is making tons of cash off of an old Amiga OS. But I could be wrong.

But Amiga OS 4 (http://os.amiga.com/os4/?PHPSESSID=c6713e6b7adc4c89bd9e8087c66cad9d) hasn't even been released yet, and it looks a lot different than XP...

The Amiga OS 4/Windows XP talk belongs in The OS...of DOOM! (http://forums.toonzone.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43745) thread, so let's get back to talking about Halo 2.

I don't have official word from Microsoft (And who does on a matter like this?), but the reason I figure it's taking so long to port the original Halo is becuase Microsoft wants it to take this long. Microsoft needs to keep it exclusive to the Xbox as long as possible to keep sales up. It may bother those who don't have an Xbox, but you can't blame Microsoft for trying to sell more systems.

You can expect a similar delay for Halo 2.

So I've been tryin' out Halo on my roomie's EvilBox... yeah, it looks pretty, but once the plasma starts flyin' in every direction, the framerate can really take a dive. And now they're makin' the sequel even prettier?

That's okay, I guess, as long as their priorities are in the right place and they fix the framerate problem first. I'll take a smooth FPS over a pretty one any day.
