When people first see Ed, they assume that she's a boy. But that doesn't make her a boy, does it? The creators of the show say she's a girl.

Ed is a girl, she hasn't hit puberty yet and is very tomboy-ish, so it's not like you can tell physically. Further, there are several episodes where she bonds with Faye by learning more about women (remember, she never really knew her mom), and I think if she was supposed to be a boy she really wouldn't care about Faye's breasts, for example, at that age.

Duh it's pretty obvious he is -- he's the only person she ever really seemed happy to see, they obviously had been together a long time, and his scatterbrained nature and tendency to lose Ed by forgetting about her explains a lot about why she turned out like she did.

How do you know they aren't just both crazy people? I do tend to believe he is her father, but you should NEVER, EVER rule out the other possibilities.

It flew up (unseen) obviously in episode 9 because we hear Faye yell "Hey you're a girl!!"

How does Faye figure out Ed is a girl? She just blurts it out in a voiceover. I know they left it open to interpretation, but I've yet to think of a situation where her sex would suddenly become obvious that doesn't seem odd.

No, I think what Ed did was stuff those snacks down her pants and Faye saw. Ed has no chest. How would Faye know if those are female nipples or not?
