Hello Bozo And GAK:

Gentlemen, I am writing this post to the both you about a cartoon studio that everyone has been asking each other and want to know about this.I'm talking about the (Mickey Mouse's creator)UB IWERKS cartoons from the 1930s.Many cartoon fans, scholars and up and coming animators want to see his cartoons on Cartoon Network, either on the Acme Hour or Late Night B&W, now that the show will be returning in September. Many people have been asking(and hoping) to see a special "Toon Heads" episodes featuring Iwerk's cartoons or have a weekly showcase of his films, for which I would be in favor of such a show concept for your channel.Cartoon Network would be the greatest place to showcase these famous cartoons and I hope that you do listen to your audience, that an Ub Iwerks show, or special would give your network good ratings and that's because these cartoons are very rare and there any many fans that have never seen any of his excellent cartoons, but would love to have the chance to see this man's great work.

Maybe either one of you can clear this up with me, but I heard a rumor a couple of years ago, that the company, "Flim Preservation Film Associates" offered to sell the Iwerks cartoon library to your network and the network turned the company down, so I don't know how true this is, but if the both of you could clear the air on this rumor it would help.Film Preservation Assoc. Dave Shepard has done an excellent job restoring this legendary animator's work and we feel that maybe CN should really think this over. Many people here at Toon Zone(such as myself) want to see Flip The Frog, Willie Whopper and the excellent,Comic Color cartoons on your network. We know that you have been buying the tv rights to animated tv shows and others, but please consider buying the exculsive right to the Ub Iwerks cartoon library, as you could find out on just how huge of an audience you would have for this man's cartoons and you can really be the best place for cartoons.Gak,wouldn't you like to see Flip The Frog and Willie Whopper on LNB&W and the Comic Color shorts during THE ACME HOUR, on the all toon channel.FPS has resotred all of these cartoons, so it wouldn't be like your network is getting bad prints or public domain prints...But fully restored cartoons from Dave Shepard.

I hope that either one of you can respond to this and offer us your thoughts of the thought of seeing Ub Iwerks films on Cartoon Network in the future.

And for everyone else here, please post your thoughts about this and let Bozo and Gak know that we want the Ub Iwerks cartoons on CN on this post, to let them know that there is a lot of fans that would love to see his cartoons on this network.

Bozo & Gak, Thanks for taking the time to read this post, and please take this into consideration....

Signed:
Nelson aka MOE HARE

I think it would be great if Cartoon Network got the rights to Ub Iwerks cartoons. Having only seen selected cartoons through a video series, I would truly enjoy this show.

I personally think that this is one subject matter, I could sure use the support from everyone , on getting Ub Iwerks cartoons on Cartoon Network. :)

Hmm, no offense Nelson, but I'd rather see the Paul Terry, DePatie-Freleng or Walter Lantz cartoons on CN rather than Ub Iwerks cartoons.

Not saying I don't like Iwerks' work, it's just that all but 20 of those cartoons were released to DVD (now that I come to think of it, I believe all of them were on VHS), and those are still in print, unlike most of the videos with Woody Woodpecker, the Pink Panther, and Mighty Mouse.

So in conclusion, I'm just saying that I would like those cartoons to be on CN and Boomerang before Ub Iwerks. :)

Cartoon Network? :)
Boomerang? :(

However, I still think Ub Iwerks cartoons would be a good idea.

I agree with both Thad AND Nelson. If CN decided to pick up some more classic cartoons it would be great! They have the money, and it IS very possible. But CN hasn't decided to show any other classic cartoons outside the WB and MGM.
BUT there still is hope that they obtained these classics.
Here are my picks as to what classic cartoons CN should pick up:

Viacom - Terrytoons and the Fleischer stuff (Betty Boop, Talkartoons, Color Classics, Gabby, and maybe even Ko-Ko the Klown)

Universal - ALL the Walter Lantz cartoons

MGM - The DePatie-Freleng cartoons

Film Preservation Accociates - The Ub Iwerks cartoons

Columbia - The Screen Gems and UPA stuff.

Just immagine.......

Turning on the "Acme Hour" seeing The Fox and the Crow, the Pink Panther, Mighty Mouse, The Ant and the Aardvark, Mr. Magoo, or Woody Woodpecker
or......
Turing on LNB&W seeing Flip, Betty Boop, and Oswald

(Well, I can dream, can't I?)

None taken Thad, but the reason I said that Cartoon Network should obtain the Ub Iwerks cartoons, is that supposedly(from the rumors I heard) Film Preservation offered Cartoon Network the Flip The Frog and Willie Whopper cartoons and would stand to have a better chance to air on CN.

Viacom has no plans whatsoever to let CN air the Terrytoons, Paramount/Fleischer & Famous cartoons along with Sony and Universal.I would rather see myself, the Terrytoons along with the rest of the other cartoon studios, rather than the Iwerks film library, but IMO, the Iwerks cartoons would have a better chance to be shown on Cartoon Network than the other studios and because the FPA made an offer to the channel, where none of the other major companies didn't make offers.

Gak or Bozo, please help us out on this :( :( :(

CN has a chance (a slim one, but still a chance) to obtain airplay rights to the Lantz cartoons, because the toons actually aired for a short period from 1992-1993, since CN had a limited amount of airplay rights to the Lantz shorts.

The DePatie-Freleng shorts also have a good chance of making it to CN. Since CN ran them for quite awhile (1992-1997, I believe).

So, the Iwerks cartoons aren't the only ones CN has a possible chance to air.

I hope CN can get rights back to all of these. Like I said, they have much more money to do so.

Sadly, the rest (Columbia, The Non-Popeye Paramount, and Terrytoons) have VERY thin chances of being shown on CN (unless they use Public Domain prints which are really terrible, hence the the prints by the current owners of the shorts, which are fantastic). But we can still hope and pray that CN decides to pick up these excellent cartoons (especially Columbia with the Fox and the Crow - who really deserve to be on CN!)

I think that most of us who visit this board would like to see all these different classic cartoon collections on CN. But I think that by quibbling about which one each of us might prefer to see first we are missing the bigger picture and making it more likely that we get none of the above.

We want CN to expand it's library to include more classic cartoon collections but it's very unlikely that they will do it by obtaining several studios collections all at once. It is far more likely that they will move one at a time. Nelson's suggestion is that they try to get ahold of one excellent choice (Iwerks) which is perhaps the most likely one for them to obtain. I think it's a great idea!

So the real question to focus on is: Would you like to see the Iwerks cartoons added to CN's lineup? Not "Which cartoon collection would you most like to see added to CN's lineup?"

I say let's try to get one added (and Iwerks is a great choice), help it succeed, then try for others...

This is all IMHO of course... :D

David Shepard also has the Van Buren cartoons in restored form.

That's true, Patrick.

Van Beuren cartoons should be on CN along with Iwerks, Lantz, DePatie Freleng, and any other package classic cartoons they can easily obtain.

They should also go after the Van Beuren cartoons, some of which Film Preservation Associates owns.

I'd like to see any of these, but IMO, the Depatie/Freleng 'toons would be best.

I wouldn't mind seeing the entire Columbia library ending up on CN, especially the B&W entries (Scrappy, Krazy Kat et all) 'cause then they would turn up on LNB&W!!!

I have a whole tape full of Flip the Frog shorts and I really wasn't too impressed by them. While I enjoyed the Carl Stalling music scores, I just didn't find Flip to be a very interesting character to carry a series. A few one-shots, maybe, but even that's stretching it...a reptile/amphibian (or whatever) as a cartoon star doesn't exactly fly with me...

I got distracted. My first reply to this thread sums up my opinion. :o
