Howdy,
Just spotted this one via comicbookresources.com:
http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=1421
The news item is that Jeff Smith of Bone fame is going to be doing a new Captain Marvel miniseries in 2003.
Sample artwork is at http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/preview.php?image=news/shazam.jpg . It seems Smith will be writing AND drawing, which is uber-cool.
I'm not a huge fan of the Big Red Cheese, but I know there are a lot of Shazam! fans on the board, and I am a huge fan of Jeff Smith. Two great tastes that taste great together.

Cool, more Capt. Marvel stuff! A character mostly ignored since his "Power of Shazam" series got cancelled by DC a few years back...
Just hope that: A) They don't refer to Captain Marvel Junior by the wretched name "CM3", and B) He loses the "pupil-less eyes" look from cap by the time the series goes to print (prefer the "squinting-eyes" look over the "Little Orphan Annie" look ;-)
-B.
Still wondering why the "Titans Secret Files" writer put Fawcett City as being in Indiana (whereas "Power of Shazam" seemed to make it sound more like Wisconsin via a lot of its references)...

i hope that "bone" remembers to make the big red cheese give his trademark grin :)

Howdy,
Duuuuuuh...I posted the subject without really thinking about it. Jeff Smith has no cool comic book nickname -- his self-published comic (which eventually got picked up by Image) is called Bone and it's fantastic.
Check out http://www.boneville.com for more info on Smith's works, and http://www.boneville.com/library/excerpts/bone2.shtml for sample pages from Bone. That might give you a better sense of what kind of shenanigans you'll be in for when he turns his attention to the Big Red Cheese. You may also feel strangely compelled to buy lots of Bone TPBs and big inflatable heads of the Great Red Dragon, which are impulses I most heartily recommend giving in to.

Only Alex Ross or Ed McGuinness should be allowed to draw the good Captain.
I'm not at ALL sure about this upcoming mini-series.

This could turn out to be the surprise comic of 2003. Jeff Smith is a terrific comic book artist and writer and I think I'll give this book a chance when it comes out. Unfortunately I'm sure DC will get a $2.95 cover or something and it'll quickly be off my list of books to buy.
