My favorite cartoon, Fast and Furrious, Chuck Jones ,1947, there is a bit in there that makes me smile every time I think of it Wiley is trying to catch the road runner, (this was the first road runner cartoon ever made) and he uses an old refridgerator to makes ice cubes, and skates over the ice with the refridgerator on his back, as the refrigerator is creating continues to create ice. Unfortunately, the refridgerator runs out, and we all know the rest. Chuck and Mike Maltese, who wrote that were true geniuses. Does any one know if Christy Maltese, the background direcor of the recent full length Disney movie "Dinasour" was related to Mike? Good luck to all, old toon guy

There were a series of Road Runner cartoons, made after 64, where they got rid of the orchestra, and were directed by someone other than Chuck Jones.. They were done cheaply...and they were poor..old toon guy

I wouldn't call them "excellent," but I sort of like them too. McKimson did a good job on his two, and some of them can be pretty original, like the one with the Indian rain dance. I hold them in higher regard than the other cartoons WB was releasing at the time, but maybe that's because the blackout gag format of the Roadrunner cartoons isn't too terribly difficult to screw up, eccept in the instances where they tried to give the cartoons a plot...

I don't like those post-63's either. To those sticking up for them, I respect you for that, but I don't think they match the energy and quality of the WB cartoons from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It's not their fault, they had lower budgets and not much else to work with. I also don't care for those later Road Runner and Coyote cartoons. I don't know about McKimson's RR&C cartoons, but I always had a problem with Larriva. He really didn't know how to handle RR&C, and his RR&C cartoons had bizarre timing and repetitive gags. They also used the same music in the later RR&C's ALL the time, and the funny thing is, it never fits the scene it was used in. In fact, I occasionally pop a Larriva RR&C cartoon in the VCR for some laughs because of how poor they are. Sorry if I'm offending the post-63 fans, this is only my opinion.

As for the Gene Deitch T&J's, I just can't watch those (not to mention that CN shows DICKY MOE all the time). Those are really strange, and Jones' T&J's aren't any better.

Lonestarr

Chuck Jones:
Best - So very many to choose from ("The Ducksters", "Rabbit of Seville", "Robin Hood Daffy", etc.)
Worst - Definitely "Tom Thumb in Trouble". Way too cutesy, and lightweight in the extreme compared to Jones' later, better work.

Bob McKimson:
Best - Any Porky & Daffy cartoon ("Fool Coverage", "Daffy Doodles", "Daffy Duck Slept Here", etc.)
Worst - Just about anything after '64 (except Bunny and Claude)

More to come...

Oh I agree with what you said completely, they don't have the energy, music, or animation of the other shorts. I think the only thing about them that was on par with the later Jones shorts were the backgrounds in a few of them.

I never cared for the Dietch or Jones Tom and Jerry cartoons, but there are a few I like. I sort of give the Dietch cartoons a bit of extra credit for at least getting some of the expressions of the characters right. If you look at the H-B Tom and Jerrys, you'll see that the characters had similar expressions all throughout the series, like a normal people would have. My favorite of these was the evil look Tom would sometimes get with his toung hanging out of his mouth. Jones threw all that out and tried to re-invent the characters. It works sometimes, though.

I certainly do, but here are my best/worst of the DePatie/Freleng Road Runner films:

Best: The Solid Tin Coyote (1966). I especially love when a) the Road Runner is scared out of its wits and b) the two statements commanded--Eat, Stupid and One More Try, You Idiot! That is an overlooked classic.

Worst: Sugar And Spies (1966). I don't particularly care for a crossover of Wile E. with The Inspector (also DePatie/Freleng). Coincidental crossover? It's a possibility...but I sure don't like it.

More replies forthcoming in other categories!!

I'll stick to Dietch/Snyder, but here are my best/worst of his crop:

Best: Carmen Get It! (1962) and It's Greek To Me-ow! (1961) . I love them both...the musical magic of Carmen with all the Tom and Jerry trimmings. The other...well, the gags were painfully funny to watch...as Tom experienced.

Worst: Buddies...Thicker Than Water (1962) . The cartoon was outright cold, and even a message in a bottle couldn't keep my interest. Cold, dry, stormy...felt like a Jerrysicle after that one!

Stay tuned for more...

Call me a meathead like Screwball Squirrel, but here's my best/worst "Thumb" films:

Best: Thumb Fun (1950) . Easy one there, with Porky, Daffy, and the AAA Hitchhiker's Thumb at the end.

Worst: Tom Thumb In Trouble (1940) . No offense, but there wasn't much comedy in that film. I guess there needed to be some drama instead of comedy. It's OK, but I'd rather be dealing with a Teenage Thumb.

Still more coming up...

I would not say that was a bad cartoon. The title is creative, but the concept had to be taken from Bunker Hill Bunny (1949) .

Also, on my worst WB list I'd have just about any of the Turner owned B&W Merrie Melodies. God, those stink. Who honestly cares about garbage coming to life?!?! I really like the ones with the "star characters" (like Foxy and Piggy). The others tend to get REAL boring. I remember every time I watched LNB&W late, I'd fall asleep during one of those, or those awful PD Betty Boops they show. When a Porky or Popeye cartoon comes on, I'm up. :)

One of the post 63 toons not mentioned yet, by Chuck Jones, is "The Dot and the Line"....Don't know if anything had ever been made like that before. (if you know, plese post, I would be interested. An interesting and enjoyable toon, with the prmise that a line, falls in love with a dot... a mathamatical type cartoon, full animation. good story, narrated by Robert Morly, I think..won the Academy Award for that year. I think I totally lost it! Here are my best/worst in kiddie cartoon stories:

Best: a tie for Three Little Bops (1956) and Goldimouse and the Three Cats (1959) , in my opinion Sylvester (and Jr.)'s best cartoon. They are both classics. In fact, I had the privilege of showing the Three Little Bops as an example of revised story writing in my Performing Arts classes last year.

Worst: well, I have to go with Foney Fables (1942) ...just felt that the cartoon was as good as the wolf gulping the boy in the final scene.

Honorable mentions go to Cinderella Meets Fella (1938) and The Bears' Tale (1940) --which was a great crossover of Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks.
