View Full Version : Swearing on the boards...

Can somebody clarify the rules on swearing for me? I've seen the b*st**d word used a few times recently on these boards, mostly by the same poster, and once used as a derogatory term for a British person. Yes, I'm British. Yes, I find it offensive. Can somebody clear this up for me? I deliberately go out of my way to avoid profanity on these boards - not only because I feel swearing is the recourse of an unimaginative mind, but also because I respect the rules of the board, which I thought forbade cussing...

According to the rules posted by DG, this is a family board and there's not supposed to be any swearing. In fact, we're not supposed to substitute asterisks to replace letters in strong language, since it's still pretty obvious what the word says.

Somebody disparaged British people? Hey, my family is British! (kinda)(though we've been in the States for hundreds of years) I'll kick that git in the arse! Grrrr....

Well, it's kinda okay for minor profanity. Like, i think damn, hell, and crap are okay. I don't think i would ever use the "b" word though. I always try to find alternatives for some more harsh words and phrases, although i have let the above three slip out. I do think the "b" word is a bit too offensive though, but someone else might think my "okay list" isn't okay. It's always a tuff call.

PG level swears like 'damn' and 'hell' are allowed, by please try to avoid the rest. I know we may slip up now and again by try and keep it in control. I'll admit to the occasional slip up. We'll do our best to catch any of the higher level swears.

I think swearing is a lazy mind at work anyway. I can't be all holier than thou either, cuz I get lazy from time to time! But I am just saying I am with Bird Boy on this, we don't really need to do it, and since this is a PG board, it can actually work our brain muscels to come up with a better (and often more effective) way of saying something without lowering our intellects to use swear words. But yeah, if the words can be used in PG movies, like damn and hell are sooooo common, I don't have a problem with them here.

exetreme use of profanity makes you sound low class(not in the salary meaning). i find it next to smoking the most unattractive thing a girl can do. the strongest language i use is sucks, hell, and crap usually.

Man, smoking is a nasty habit. There are some girls I have met who I really liked but found myself turning away once I found out they had that nasty habit. Some will smoke like only one or two cigarettes a day, and I guess that's not that bad, as long as I don't have to smell it, but more often than not, it's a bad habit for them and they smoke too much and they stink. I just hate it. I grew up in a house of smokers and I would never do it.

So, what happens if I report a post with swearing in it?[/COLOR]

As a practical matter, it depends on which mod takes the problem up, and what the swear words are. Lotta judgement calls, particularly in these sorts of cases.

Ah! personally I don't see what's wrong with cussing. Their just words of expressing disgust in my opinion. I cuss like a sailor, but I'm also southern so you understand. Never the less I shall follow the rules and reframe from using swear words. Or at least try! :)

I don't have a problem with it either. And contrary to popular opinion(I think), I think there are times when only a cuss word will do. Yeah, it's used unecessarily a lot, but there times when nothing else really gets across your meaning like an F-bomb.

I use that one rarely, but I guarantee you the few times I have used it, I felt it was the best word to get my point across.

"Crap" should be ok. It's a pretty innocuous word.

"Crap" is OK (unless another mod wants to correct me). But again, a lot depends upon how you use it. Telling another poster that "your opinion is just a lot of crap" is a big no-no.

I have no problem with swearing and, regulated by whom I am with, I will swear quite a bit... however when it comes to text, there is no need for such habits. Everything you type is pre-meditated and therefore can be moderated.

While, your language may be peppered by habit, there is no reason for your posts to be. Think on't!

Yeah, i swear w/o thinking a lot of the time. But that's when i'm talking w/ my friends and am usually ticked off about something.

Agreed. There are time when only venting can ease the mind, or dropping a word or two. But doesn't being online sorta slow down the impulsiveness or cursing swear words in a fit of rage? I admit I swear, but I keep it offline.

The board software has a censored words list, and I've entered some pretty ugly words into it. Anytime the board notices one of the words, it turns it into all asterisks. Of course, some words require the proper context to be considered offensive, and no software is smart enough to pick up on that, so pussy cat and cock-a-doodle-doo will come put okay. But it's just as well, cause if the software caught every word, we wouldn't need moderators!

If anyone notices a word they think should be censored, tell a moderator, and they'll pass it along to me or DG so we can enter it onto the list.
