View Full Version : Horror movies (was: Proposed Movie Club)

OK, for those of you who don't follow "The Neverending Post" on the Batman Beyond board (and you should be ashamed of yourselves if you don't --j/k ;)), we have spent the past few days throwing around favorite movie lists, most of them featuring movies that many of us had never seen and have consequently felt curious about.
So we're thinking about starting up a movie club. The idea would be to watch movies on a weekly basis (or thereabouts) and then post threads discussing them. The films selected would be "favorites" of posters here at Toonzone, but which have not been widely seen by the group. (The whole idea is to broaden our experience with movies by watching movies recommended by others but that we ourselves haven't seen.) With an loose-knit organization to encourage the watching and discussion of these, hopefully we could all broaden our cinematic horizons and have fun doing it!
I'm going off of the assumption that the threads would all be grouped either at the AniGen board or the DVD board. Some kind of coordination would be needed, and since I'm a mod and I'm the one who suggested it, I guess I had better take responsibility for it.
But we need input from everyone here. That's the purpose of this post: How should this work? How should we choose the movies?
My first thought (which is often the worst thought I ever have on a subject) is to accept "favorites" lists from everyone on the boards who wants to submit one. From this list we pull out the least-viewed movies, the ones that would be new to the greatest number of people here, and once that list is compiled we just set a schedule. (It would be my job as coordinator, if we do it this way, to sort through the suggestions.)
Don't reply to this post with a favorites list (though you might want to start thinking about your own submission). Instead, I would like to hear any other suggestions you might have for how to coordinate this thing.
I hope this comes off. Man, I'm already excited!

So, this is like a book club- but for lazy people?

No, it's just a way for us to share some movies we like.
Frankly, I have to go walk over to a video store some distance from my house to pick up the movie, for the book, I most likely have it somewhere in my house or it is in a library only a block away, and only need a couple of minutes to reach it. As such, I spend more time and energy thus getting the movie than the book, and that would certainly make me more lazy just grabbing the book, since I can reach it a lot sooner than the movie.
Prove the point?

you want to create a list of movies that just about no one has seen, but everyone should?
all I can suggest is to solicit entries, and learn whose to use - good luck!

Count me in, man. I think we should keep it here or the DVD Board- but are all these movies on DVD? Ah -- it doesn't matter! I think this is a stellar idea!

Sorry to go off topic - but, Myx, doesn't that make you too young to have seen horror movies? I used to think this a lot when I worked in a comic shop in England - I sold TONS of Movie Maniac figures to kids around 14, and they were all like "WOW! A Freddy figure - I've seen ALL his films!", and I'm thinking "But you're TOO YOUNG..." Am I missing something here? How come about every kid in the world has seen evry single Freddy, Leatherface, Vorhees and Halloween film ever made..?

Hey! I barely see ANY horror movies, and I'm 15! So not every teen-age person has seen the horror films...
...yes, make sure the movie is accesable by video AND DVD. I do not have a DVD player...
....so far we have a suggestion for horror. Any other suggestions?
Well, this thing certainly is getting popular!:) I wonder how big this thing will get...

I saw quite a few horror movies before I was 14. My mom is a horror movie fanatic, so I got to see quite a few of them. It's not what you watch, I will always say, but how your parents raise you and teach you how to process that information you watch. I don't think watching horror movies as a kid was detrimental to me. There are far worse things to be exposed to.

There's plenty aside from horror. Like the Indiana Jones movies, some anime, there's just alot of possibilities for this.

I already know a bunch of movies I'd love you guys to see. I know most of you have some obscure fave's too. I always have a list of "movies I haven't see, but will see in the future." Unfortunatley there is a problem with my dvd drive. So I don't know how soon I'll be seeing any of them. Anyway, I look forward to these movie posts.
Suggestions, huh. Well, if a bunch of us all submit lists, this could be a lot of work for the mods. If they're going to look through them and pick out the most obscure choices. Besides, we like to change our list over and over.
I think we should all submitt only one film, to start. The mods can pick the film at random, then we'll focus on it for a week or two before moving to the next film. Once all the films are done, we'll submit more movie choices.
Just a rough suggestion.

OK, I've done something rarely done on these boards. I've changed the name of the thread.
It's wandered from the original topic ("Not that there's anything wrong with that"), but more importantly, I did not want it confused with the new "Toonzone Movie Club" thread at the top.
For further discussions about the movie club, I suggest you go to the "Toonzone Movie Club" thread. I guess that's the official thread for this subject now.

That kind of goes along with my reply to people who say they don't have time to read, but do have time to watch a movie. The thing about a book is that you can read it at ten minute stretches if you need to. Who doesn't have time for that?
You can take it along with you anywhere, they don't need electricity, a TV screen, VHS or DVD drive, water doesn't ruin them, you can rewind, fast forward, pause, everyone I've ever read has been in 3D, technicolor, better than dolby sound.
I buy paperbacks from Goodwills and used book stores then carry them with me anywhere I go. Five idle minute gives me time to read a few pages.
I love the idea of a movie club. I'll participate when I can, but I'm too lazy and don't have time to watch a movie EVERY week. ;)

because they are so good, actually, i like a lot of the old stuff but the slasher stuff is pretty funny though. zombies always make for good movies. a strategy me and mxy use when checking out horror films is we go for the ones that are so bad they are not rated, so the parents assumes they are ok or, example: my mom has taken us to the movie store, and we want to rent one thats r, mxy has already seen it and he says its ok, same as if mxy mom takes us, i say the same thing. but this wont be a problem because i'll be able to drive by my self in less than a year so no more questions when i go to the movie store.
oh and for the movie club, i wouldnt want to be in a horror movie only clud, sure its my favorite type of movie, but hey, i like other types of movies to.

The club is open to any genre. And I'm sure there are some good but obscure horror films out there that might be worth discovering.

Really? Oh, that must be it then. Mind you, when I was 14 I could spell 'mature' (presuming you mean 'mature' and not 'macho'). But I didn't know how to spell 'mxyzptlk', so hats off to you there... ;)

I think it's a Joycean pun: "Macher" as "mature" and also a reference to "mach": 14 year olds today are a lot quicker than they used to be! ;)

the mispelling was a joke i dont really think i am more mature. i was kidding. the real reason is you can pretty much find most of the stuff on tv thats in movies.
