Well I know what they do but how did they get that way? I don't remember the story to it.

All right, this is my take on it. Remember the time when Spike acted out the scene where he's suppose to die so he could get out of the syndicate? Remember in Ballad of the Fallen Angels where Spike was smiling with blood coming down his face in his flashbacks? Well that blood came from his left eye and I guess somewhat shot or ripped his left eye off.
That's my take on it.

Spike loses his eye and gets a new cybernetic eye. As seen in the opening of "Sympathy for the Devil." That's why they're different colors.

I like how he gets right up in Fae's face and tells her about his cybernetic eye...then she wigs out on him and starts saying, "Stop telling me about yourself." That was an intense moment.

This affliction originates from his tendency to sleep with one eye closed and watch TV with the other eye open.

Doesn't work, jetwing. Because the scene you're talking about happened as Spike was leaving the syndicate; and it's clear that Spike told Julia about his eye at some point. If he had lost his eye during his relationship with Jules, she'd know about it already and he wouldn't have had to tell her about it.

Spike told Faye before he left to fight Vicious

Oh! Well then...
Spike must've gotten into lots fights during his childhood and lost his eye during that time. So he fixed it with the help of the syndicate's money.
If that's not it, then I really don't know. I'm fresh out of ideas here.

Ok in the story Spike has one fake eye and one real one. We know that and we saw the operation in "Sympathy for the devil"
I think his right eye is fake and not his left as suggested in one of the earliear post. I bilieve this because he says his "My left eye sees the past and my right eye sees the present" meaning that the one real eye that he has is from his past, during his life in the syndicate. That would be his left.
His right eye is a new one that came afterwards after he left the syndicate during his "second life" Thus that eye does not see any memory from the past.
So left =real : right=fake
"i've only been able to see patches of reality, never the whole picture" meaning his eyes are "seeing" two different times, Two different lives.

Actually, it's his left eye that's fake. I'm pretty sure that's written down somewhere, in one of the anime guides or something.

Yeah, I always thought it was lost in Spike's final Syndicate job, until I noticed that in one episode Julia says "Your eyes are different colors." So it had to be while they were still sweet on each other. So best I can figure, Spike just lost it on a regular mission. Or he was fooling around with Vicious' sword while screaming "Hey, look at me, I'm a pretty-boy with a big sword!" and he tripped.

At the end of "Pierrot Le Fou," Pierrot freaks out because of a glint in Spike's mechanical eye that reminds him of the cat's mechanical eye. It goes by pretty quick, so it's easy to miss. I think it was Spike's right eye that glinted.
Now don't get me started on the Replicants from Blade Runner...

Holy crud! I never noticed the Pierrot thing!
Also, on the topic of Spike's eye, did anyone else notice that one of the last things in the intro is a sort of abstract representation of Spike's mechanical eye? I think that's what it is.

Actually, it's human eyes that glint like that. Haven't you ever seen any photographs with the notorious red eye? It has to do with a reflective bit of tissue at the back of the eye. It's Spike's left eye that's the mechanical one; depend upon it.

To whoever said Spike's eye got shot out. If that than it would have passed through his heaard and he'd be dead before the show

ah but, Spike was killed before.......by a woman. He said so in the first episode. Alright I'm just joking (and it wasnt as funny as I had hoped). I know that he was just speaking figuratively.
I like not knowing what happened to his eye. It adds a mysterious depth to his character.

Shot as in "dodging by just a little yet getting hurt in the eye". Y'know, a permanent scratch and stuff.
