I know that many of you have seen lord of the rings, and The Hobbit in their animated versions. But is it just me or are there several animated versions of it? And also does any one remember when animated lord of the rings was on cartoon network? Who wouldnt want to see that again on there? Write to CN and tell them to show lord of the rings...

I remember when CN first came to fruition they aired the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings movies more than a couple of times. And I was very surprised they didn't capitalize on the success of the "Fellowship of the Ring" premiere. Someone @ CN just has no brain. They are just too stupid.

There are two movies based on LOTR: Bakshi's Lord Of The Rings, which covers the first half of the LOTR story, and Rankin-Bass's Return of the King, which is based on the last book of the LOTR trilogy. Rankin-Bass also did The Hobbit. I think that WB has the rights to all of those, but it is possible that CN would've had to clear things with WB before airing them. And who knows how easy or hard that could've been.

I remember going to see the animated version (Bakshi's) at the cinema in my late teens and have a tape of it when it was aired on TV years ago. I'm surprised they haven't pushed this out on general video release too, seems an opportunity wasted.

I've never seen the second version you mentioned Joe, based on Return of the King, fingers crossed they both resurface again

All of them were very easily found in stores last year many, many months before the LOTR movie came out. I still see Bakshi's LOTR on DVD at WalMart and other places. Hobbit is still out there a lot too. Return Of The King might be harder to find, but you can probably find it if you keep your eyes open. Or just order them from Amazon. ;) They're all still in stock there.

Howdy,

I've seen a DVD 3-pack containing the Rankin-Bass Hobbit and Return of the King, along with Ralph Bakshi's Lord of the Rings movie. The movies were kicked out the door at around the same time the live-action movies were released.

Supposedly, Bakshi had planned to do a follow-up to the first movie, but these plans got scuttled after a studio butchering and its subsequent box-office failure. Rankin-Bass stepped up and asked if they could finish the series in their own style, which Bakshi agreed to.
