"Fistic Mystic" was on the 2:30 AM Popeye last night. I had never seen that cartoon before. What was up with Popeye's voice? It sounded sped-up, and just not like himself at all. Was it one of the cartoons where Mae Questel did the voice of Popeye while Jack Mercer was in WWII?
What makes the whole thing even stranger is that there were two lines in the cartoon that were unquestionably Jack Mercer. But the rest of the lines sounded like that imitation Popeye voice. And the two lines that sounded like Mercer were the little ad-libbed mutterings, which itself is strange, since the cartoon was released in 1946, and Mercer had stopped doing the mutterings by that point.
