I was wondering what the smiling/unsmiling computer monitor icon next to each forum represents - board activity?

It seems odd that so many of them have non-smiling icons when nearly all the forums are rather active. And there really shouldn't be one used at all for the News forum.

I think it may mean a new post since you last visited....that's what it seems to me.

Give that boy a Twinkie... he got it right!

Yes, the smily/frownie computers on the main board menu do, in fact, indicate whether or not the forum it is next to has had any new posts since your last visit.

It seems rather unreliable, though. I always find new posts even if there is no yellow smilie face. Same thing goes with the other icons.

Well, considering how active our forums are, I'd have to say that the icons aren't an exact science. What's to say that the precise moment you click on the forum to go there, someone hasn't clicked the "submit" button at the same time?

I have, however, noticed that if I visit the board, go to another webpage, then come back here (within a couple minutes) it will usually say that the ones that were new are still new... but like I said, it's not an exact science, and I think it has a lot to do with how the cookies are set...

The icons will light up (and smile) on any boards that have new posts since you last visted. The same goes for the envelope icons on posts within a board. The software doesn't keep track of every post you've read, only what's new since the last time you visited.
