--the "Sambo dancing" line is left in "Rio", but a couple of blackface gags get cut out of "Good Deed". [as Bob Hope] Seems the censors are about as erratic as Kelsey Grammar's wife's digestive tract. Grrrr-owwwwwrrrr.

Not much we haven't seen before, since most of these get plenty of airtime. Though I note "Wakiki Wabbit" ,which I haven't seen in awhile, is on the roster....I may have to make a note to catch the last half-hour on the second run.

I just watched W'ERE ON OUR WAY TO RIO on the repeat version of the Acme Hour, and the "sambo" line was cut! What is it with CN. They allow the cartoon to be shown uncut during primetime, but they edit it late at night?

I just saw "Rio" on the repeat, and I can assure Popeye still claimed he did no sambo dancin'. (It's not really that bad of a line, really- just a malapropism of "samba," with no real intention of the inspiration...)

I'm pretty sure it was cut. Right when the lady asked Popeye if he wants to do the samba, Popeye says, "But lady..." then it suddenly cuts to the next shot before Popeye can do the sambo line. Unless maybe I'm thinking of a different scene and missed the "sambo" line.

You must have missed it. Or didn't watch the entire scene. I just watched my tape of the repeat and it was there.

After Bluto introduces Popeye to Olive, Popeye first said: "But... I don't do no...er...uh...". Olive interrupts and asks for "one little samba dance". To which Popeye replies, "Senorita, this is embarrassikin '...". A few seconds later, he says, "But I don't do no sambo dancin'..."

I don't get the problem. Is it offensive or stereotypical to a certain ethnic group?

There's nothing wrong with Samba dancing, but Popeye pronounces it "Sambo." Sambo was a little black boy character in a children's story where he chases a tiger (?) around a tree and turns him into butter.

I also believe "Denny's," the restaurant, was originally called "Sambo's," and that got them in trouble with black people, so they changed it...

Actually, I think Denny's bought Sambo's, and changed all the locations into Denny's locations when they got into trouble...

TServo2049's theory is probably correct, since old photos from the grand opening of Denny's exist, and it clearly says on the diner Denny's (from 1953).

Thanks for the info, TServo2049. I wasn't sure of the details since the story of "Sambo's" was just told to me once, and not in great detail. I'd always wondered why it was called "Denny's" in the grand opening pictures, even speculating that the picture was doctored up to change the sign (hey, it could happen, look at Disney, the king of digital editing...) All I know for sure is that I haven't gone there to actually eat since about 1994.
