I took a quick and dirty "German for Reading Knowledge" in grad school. (The dept. insisted that I needed the credit, but didn't really want me to spend time on it; go figure  ). Just enough to make me realize that Spanish was a heck of a lot easier.

Near as I can tell, learning German is harder than learning Spanish or French. But, don't let that stop you if you have a genuine interest in the language.

I took Spanish myself, since I figured I might have to use it someday...

--once told me that German is not the most romantic language in the world. If you try to say 'I love you', you spit all over the girl. Makes you wonder how the hell Hitler ever got any.
About the only German I know is what I pick up off old Hogan's Heroes reruns.... :p

Hey I know German :P

BTW I never heard that people spit when they say "Ich liebe dich".

French is a lot harder than German! Believe me. I dropped French last year and I don't regret this choice at all (lol although I live 10 miles away from France)

French can be hard, I admit-especially conjugating all those words! (Shudders...) But lots can be easy, too...

....German sounds like an interesting language to learn, actually. I'd like to try it....but there are no German classes nearby. :(

I think French is harder than German.

I don' think I'm understanding that. But here's my take on the languages.

In high school I wanted to take Italian beause I'm Italian, but they didn't offer it. So I stuck with Spanish, and it was not a bad decision at all. With Spanish, you have a lot of conjugation to learn and stuff, but when you have a sound that's how it sounds. It's a great language. When I try to read German or French, as an English speaker, I can't pronounce 99% of what I'm looking at. Like that saying in French "such is life" is pronounced "say la vee". But the spelling is like "C'est le vi" or something. It hurts my little head.

So that's why I could never learn French. And let's not forget, English is a horrific language in itself. As my friend was saying in a conversation the other day, when you have so many exeptions to rules (in this case, in a language), they aren't rules anymore!

I took a year of Japanese and I think it's difficult, yet fascinating. I can read and write 2 of the writing systems, but I fear my summer lack of studying has diminished that a bit. Still, it's pretty damn cool.

Hey....I forgot English is bad itself! I agree with how French is spelled but pronounced differently....it can be a pain....
....I would wonder how difficult Japanese is....all I can say is "Sayanora".

Sayanora till next post!:p

Je pense que (and i could be wrong) vous avez besoin d'une "de" apres "un peu." Et aussi vous n'avez pas besoin (n'avez besoin pas?) ... ah, forget it. You don't need both the "est ce-que" and the reversed subject verb. Maybe we should get KyleWayne in here to check it out. And it's weird chatting w/ people en francaise. Fun too. So i look forward to another french-speaking (francophone:)) pal.

Quelle anee etes vous en? Vous l'aimez?

Edit: And i'm not trying to sound stuck up or anything by my post. Sorry if i come off sounding it. Mais, je parle francaise un peu aussi:)

I took an intensive german class in university for 2 months and I gotta tell ya...it 's not an easy language especially the verb conjugations. I enjoyed learning Spanish more than german. I found it more easier to pronounce and speak.

I would not worry-I'm rusty too. But for now I don't care-it's just in September back in school I will. My teacher gets very angry when my class does not remember stuff...

Aww.....I wanna speak French! Oh well....it's for the best....

English, Korean, Spanish.........i'm taking spanish in school so I can watch all those spanish channels and understand whats going on. also spanish is more useful in life because there are a lot of spanish speaking people around to do business with. the only thing annoying with spanish is conjugating all of those verbs!

Well, English is my home language and i speak it very fluently. I've taken 3 years of francais and this year, i will be in AP Honors French 4, so considering that this is just a high school class, i'm doing pretty well. I can also count to ten in Spanish and, as i said before, i know a very small amount of German from the girl i like.

Mr. Eye

I speak and write 3 languages fluently. My first one is Greek. Then I learned English from TV :), and French at school. I want to learn how to speak another one too. Maybe Italian or Spanish.

I speak german too. It's forced upon us Danes in school when we are 13 years old!!! ANyway..I learned more German from watching Batman on German TV than from 4 years in school!! *GG*

I think the German grammar is hard. It's all those rules. Actually it's like math...kinda (that's why I stink at it!)
Spanish is very easy to learn because many of the words remind of the english language.
I like German. I think it's cool.
Japanese is something totally different. I love the language but man! It's hard cuz they have so many words!! I mean...they have terms for stuff we never ever though of and it's almost untranslate-able

Anyhow...

I speak Danish, Norwiegan, German and English.
I had Spanish for 2 years in highschool and since my family in the US speak Spanish I think I wanna learn more.
I want to learn japanese really bad!!

Yeah Japanese is extremely complicated. Not only the words, but the writing systems too! But like any language, or anything, it just takes time.

And might I add, since having English as my first language, that many props go out to Mr. Eye using TV to learn English. It's gotta be the hardest stupidest language in the world, and this guy doesn't even need to take a class! Well done!

Oh, and I guess mine are English, Spanish and Japanese.

Kylewayne

I am fluent in speaking, writting and teading in 3 languages.
My mother tongue is Greek. Second is English , and third is French ...the two last languages I speak outside the house.

I lso took 3 years of spanish. i can understand what people say in spanish but cannot speak it. Only a few words and phrases. I also took an intesive German class for 2 month in the summer...I recommend everybody not to take intensive. It was hard! I agree with Fish on the grammar and rules...way too many...it is like doing math.

Anyway, Sprechen sie Deutch? :D

It is true that the English language is probably the hardest one for foreigners to learn, between its odd rules and its colloquialisms..In college I used to have dinner with a lovely Japanese ESL (English as a Second Language) student, and I taught her to speak English using routines from Jeff Foxworthy albums. Also, I recall my Chinese roommate and I spent one meal discussing slang terms for the lavatory,e.g. "can", "crapper", "head", and "john".

I used to speak Spanish to my ex. I would repeat the phrase "mi vida, mi amor, mi todo" in her ear. She didn't know what it meant, but it got her hot anyway...lol.

Don't worry, Mxy. If you have a good ear and fast tongue you can pick up enough Spanish to communicate effectively in mere months. Just think Liza Doolittle in Pygmalion....
