Toon Zone was able to catch up with Canadian artist John Delaney about his upcoming work on the popular Justice League Adventures comic series as well as give us a taste of what is to come.
Toon Zone: The cover to Justice League Adventures #11 is very patriotic. Is there an inspiration behind that image?
John Delaney: The cover for #11 was a concept idea I had before I knew it was going to be used for the September tribute issue. I was commisioned by DC to do a bunch of cover sketches for inventory and that one was one of them. I wanted to portray the league in a WWII Russianesque style poster. The League looking toward a new horizon kinda thing. When editor Steve Wacker told me they were going to use it for this issue I was deeply honored. My original sketch just had beams of light streaking the sky behind them, it was DC's cool idea to put the flag back there. I really love the way this cover turned out and it was a special thrill to find out Rick Burchett inked it. Rick and I met in San Diego a few years back when I was doing Adventures in the DCU and he was doing Superman Adventures. We really hit it off and I had always hoped we could work together on something since I'm such a fan of his stuff ( both inking and pencilling).
Toon Zone: can you tell us anything about the current issue of Justice League Adventures you're working on?
John Delaney: The Scott McCloud story I'm working on right now is so good that I don't want to give anything away but I will say this it focuses on J'onn but has such brilliant spot on depictions of each league member it reads like a two hour movie. I'm definately opening up the panels and borders to compliment Scott's epic style story. When I finished reading the script I was so blown away that I called my editor Steve and Scott and told them that I truly believe this is one of the best Justice League stories written let alone Justice League Adventures and should be nominated for an Eisner. I'm not kidding! Now I just hope I don't screw it up, but to be completely honest with you Jim, there's no way I'm going to let that happen.
I have that other JLadvs. featuring Aquaman coming out soon as well, currently it's scheduled to be #15 but anything can happen between now and then. John Synder (Grendal) inked it and he did an amazing job! You gotta see this stuff!
Toon Zone: Thanks alot, John! Discuss This Interview Here!
